A pistol grip release allows for quick, one-handed angle changes, and the ratcheting adjustment system allows you to easily pull the holder to a vertical position. GB, Definitely turn the fish ID feature off - I think you'll be amazed at the difference. Fish ID tries to identify actual fish but what frequently ends up happening is that anything that causes a sonar return is displayed as a fish and it will lead you into believing that the area you're in is full of fish when in fact it may not be. You'll want to read up on sonar principles so that you know how to interpret the graph with the ID turned off, but once you learn more about it you'll be able to pull a ton more information from your sonar than you can with the ID feature turned on. You'll be able to see fish, bait, rocks, soft bottom, hard bottom, submerged trees, etc - all of which is displayed as fish with your ID feature turned on. The link that Jeremy posted above appears to be full of good information and should help a lot.

That appears to be the higher powered of the two, the HD. Good choice!

Ed, Look into a plastic thru-hull for your aluminum boat. You can't use bronze because the interaction between the aluminum and the bronze will eat away the aluminum hull and the bronze housing. Sean, Yes there are both plastic and stainless thru-hull transducers available. Just be sure that you get a flushmount thru-hull or at the very least make sure that your trailer won't hit the fairing block. 711skwerlz - You're right, the 597ci HD is 4,000 watts peak to peak. But what Cabela's has on sale is not the HD version and is only 2,400 watts peak to peak. I should have been clearer in my previous post. It shows 3' contours all along Lake Ontario and provides a lot of detail that you won't find on the base maps. If you're fishing the Finger Lakes you'll want to check out the Navionics HotMaps East. GB, It's hard to tell you what to do without knowing how you've been using the unit in the past. Do you by chance have the Fish ID feature turned on? If so you're going to want to turn that off and leave it off. Which transducer do you have and how are you using it? If you're ever out our way I'd be happy to show you how we have our Humminbird set up for our applications.

Sean, You have to keep that transducer in the water all the time or you're going to lose bottom, no matter the brand of fish finder. I'd move it to a position that will allow the transducer to be in the water all the time and away from any cavitation bubbles - that's why lots of us have thru-hull transducers. That should help your performance a ton. As far as the 597c goes, that's a decent unit for shallow water use although its a bit light on power for typical Lake Ontario trolling applications. You'll want to find a fish finder that has 500 watts RMS or 4,000 watts Peak-to-Peak power in order to get the bottom definition and target separation that we need out on the open lake. The 597c has only 300 watts RMS (2,400 p-p). A better choice would be the new 596c HD or a 788ci HD if you need a combo unit. Both of those units have 500 watts RMS. There was a batch of bad transducers from one of Humminbird's suppliers last year but that has been rectified.

Not sure where you're getting your information from rolmops, but Humminbird works quite well with Airmar transducers and they also use 50KHz frequencies if necessary. I have an Airmar thru-hull with 200/50KHz on my boat and have never had a single issue with either the Humminbird or the transducer. Yankee Troller has an Airmar thru-hull with his Humminbird and hasn't had an issue with it either. All one needs to do is match the proper transducer with the head unit you've purchased and install them and you'll be fine. A mis-matched transducer/sonar unit is never a good idea regardless of the brand. thompsm7 - If you have questions about your Humminbird , PM me and I'll do my best to answer them. I have a Minn Kota MK440 on-board charger on my boat that'll be in it's 3rd season. I've been on the road for work again...ugh. I've been running an 1157C for the past three years and can't say enough good about it. The menus are very easy to navigate and the sonar returns are great. I'd highly recommend it!
