Another reason that guys run a snubber with wire isn't necessarily to absorb the shock of the hit, it's for later in the fight with the fish. A mono leader will handle the hit most of the time if it's the right lb. test. L&M and others have been very successful with using just a mono leader for a long time. Just like anything, a snubber has it's pro's and con's. Personally I like to have a snubber for when we have a big fish on wire and it's right at the back of the boat. Since all that's in the water at that point is just a short bit of wire, the dipsy, leader, lure & fish and the rod is generally fairly well loaded up, the snubber helps soften the last minute thrashing that a big fish will do and in my mind it helps keep the hook from tearing out right at the boat. Both ways work though. I've fished on a lot of good boats that don't use a snubber and they do OK without it. You just gotta decide which way works best for you. -
Just to clarify, there is no need for an allen wrench to set the desired attitude of the holder with a Traxstech. There are two tumbscrews on each holder and all you need to do is loosen them, rotate the holder into its position (I think they rotate something like 45 degrees) and tighten them. Very simple. FWIW, that new Cannon holder swivels a full 360 degrees too. They look pretty sweet to me.

No worries at all Rick. I don't use the allen wrench on mine either. But then again my boat isn't ever trailered and bouncing down the road...I can see how that would loosen them up for sure. And I agree, I'd like to see the knob a little bit bigger too. The good news is that there are LOTS of good choices for rod holders these days and any of them will do the trick. It's just a matter of personal preference.

I've owned both Bert's and Traxstech's and I like the Traxstech better than the Bert's holders. The ratchets on my Bert's wore out and that made them almost useless. I like the 5 positive locking positions on the Traxstech's better than the ratchet on the Bert's, but Bert's is still a quality product. The Traxtech holders are built like a tank and have held up beautifully for the couple of seasons we've had them. I'd put them on my boat again in a heartbeat. Our thumbscrews haven't backed out on ours though...but the track that I have on my boat is Bert's and my end cap screws do the same thing as yours do Rick. FWIW, Cannon has also come out with their own line of track mounted rod holders and they look pretty nice too. Theirs is a ratcheting system sort of like Bert's, but they've put a replaceable composite tip on the ratchet that glides easier than the metal to metal of the Bert's and can be replaced if it ever wears out. http://www.sportsmans-depot.com/details ... ystem.html You should also look at Cisco holders. Both Yankee Troller and Maniac have them on their bots and they look like a quality product too. Maybe they'll chime in with their thoughts on them.

Way to go Eric! Nice buck.

YT is right on. Get the dual frequency if you can. We run ours with both frequencies on almost all the time. And as far as power goes, get the most that you can afford. Most of us have found that a unit that's rated at 500 watts RMS (that's 4,000 watts peak-to-peak) will do all that we need it to do out on Lake Ontario. That 2,400 watt unit you're talking about is only 300 watts RMS. That'll work for you, but you'll get better target definition and separation with the higher power unit.

I've owned both a Furuno 667 and the 585. While the 667 was a great unit, the 585 is just that much better. First off, the 585 has twice the power that the 667 has (600 watts RMS for the 585 with the ability to go up to 1,000 watts, 300 watts RMS for the 667). The 585 screen is much easier to see in daylight than the 667 is even with the sun shield on, and with an Airmar thru hull triducer I can mark bait & fish while up on plane with my 585. I couldn't do that with my 667. Don't get me wrong here, the 667 is still one of the best out there but the 585 is incredible and worth every penny to me. I've also spent some time with a Raymarine C120 and was very impressed with it as well. Make sure you look very seriously at Raymarine as they make great stuff. The new Lowrance HDS Series looks sweet too, although I've never seen one in person.

Another vote for the Furuno 585 here. Love mine!

Talk to Jerry. He has a pole barn not far from your marina. Not sure if he has room in it or not, but it's definitely close!
