Tom, Just trying to clarify. Sounded to me like some guys thought that was the actual water temps.
-
That's not the actual water temps, it's a forecast. Today is August 3rd and that is for August 4th. Here's what the actual water temps are like: Much warmer than what's forecast, although you can see the beginnings of the water movement. Like CBish said, that may be a historical forecast. Save yourself the long ride out to find that colder water off Sandy...it's not there....yet.

what lures are hot?
Billy V replied to jerry rig's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
We run a lot of Sigg's Pulse Flys, that's for sure, but my favorite continues to be his Green Hypnotist Trophy fly. And yeah, we pretty regularly run his Blue Dolphin (Hammer) with a lot of success. The Green Apple has been a good one too. Truth be told, I'm a wicked tackle junkie and almost always have something totally new in the water along with the proven producers. -

I'd bet that last year's HOT lure would still be HOT this year if guys weren't out buying new stuff to run! We're still running a lot of last years hot stuff and they still catch just as many fish! -
Any idea when the next Salmon tournament is? All I can manage to find are carp and bass tourneys...YUCK!

Our brown fishing in Fair Haven stunk this spring because the winds were out of the South all spring and that fractured the temperature gradient. That South wind blew our temp break right out into the lake. We had cold water all over the place on shore and no temp breaks for most of April & May and the fish were scattered. The good news is that we've had NW wind for the past couple of days out of Fair Haven (3-5's this morning). Let's hope Mother nature decides to stick with a sustained weather pattern and we get NW winds the rest of the season. I think that'll help. Like Penn Yan 88 said, seems like almost every time I've been out the wind has been out of the South. Makes for a nice smooth boat ride, but I'd happily get bumped around in 3 footers in exchange for some doggone Kings!

That Green Hypnotist is easily our #1 producing fly. Although some of Matt's new Pulse flys have been getting bit a lot lately too! We used it to take the 17th place King in the Summer LOC:

Never tried it, but I can imagine problems with it. Wire really isn't all that hard to deal with. The learning curve is steep at first but once you get the hang of it it's really pretty easy to use and it just flat-out WORKS. I'd just spool up 1000' of 30# wire and get down to business with it.
-
I just give the tag end a pull with plies Spike. I'd stay away from the main line with pliers.
-
No backer required. 1000' of 30# 7 strand stainless will fill a Daiwa SG47LCA. Be sure to spool it on TIGHTLY. Also be sure to use a heavy ball bearing swivel with a welded ring. Works like a charm. Thanks to Tim Brommund from LOTSA for teaching me the knot and for posting the pics and directions. Here's the link to the knot. http://www.lotsa.org/Wire%20Line%20Knot.htm

Never seen a Miami Dolphin that looks like that before! The Miami Dolphin that I have is a Raider spoon and can be seen on page 4 of this pdf: http://www.bobsoutdoors.com/2008.pdf

Fair Haven 7/27 & 7/29
Billy V replied to lumberjohn's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I sure hope some west winds come (and stay) and help out. But yesterday I'm told that there was a good S wind and that's not what we need. I personally think we need a stable weather pattern with sustained W/NW winds if we're ever gonna get the fish here in numbers before they decide to head up the rivers to spawn. Not just a day or two of NW wind here and there. We need it to settle into a sustained weather pattern that lasts for the rest of the season. It's not just Fair Haven and Oswego that are struggling. The entire East End has been really spotty for Kings all summer long so far. Shoot, look at the last two Pro-Am leaderboards. A few guys got them, but most didn't and opted for browns. We've had a few good days here and there in Fair Haven but no consistency like years past. If you put in your time and cover a lot of water you should find some fish. Once you find some fish and entice them into biting, stay on them. Feel free to swing by Anchor and if we're at the boat we'll happily tell you what we found when we were out there. Good luck and enjoy your trip! -
Frost Haven is now Anchor.

Fair Haven 7/27 & 7/29
Billy V replied to lumberjohn's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the clarification lumberjohn. Now I know where you were fishing. Check my last post here: http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishin ... highlight= That'll answer some of your questions about wire & dipsys. We run out leaders 6-8' behind the snubber most of the time. -
Iceman, You might want to look into Anchor Resort in Fair Haven. It's a very relaxing, quiet little place in Fair Haven. You can fish the bay for bass, etc. if you'd like or you can head out to the big lake for trout & salmon. If you decide on it, give Chris or Linda a call at 315-947-5331. Their website is http://www.anchor-resort.com/ Hope this helps!

4 rod set up ?
Billy V replied to motheroose's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Lumberjohn, You might want to consider re-spooling your wire reels with uncoated wire line. We run this line and 1000' of 30# fills a Daiwa SG47LCA or a Daiwa ADP47LCA completely with no backer: http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/lee.htm My guess is that the diameter of the coated wire you're using is preventing you from achieving the depths you'd like to with your set-up. If my memory serves me correctly, the diameter of the 30# camo line is something like .012". Hope this helps! Oh, and I'm on the second season with a couple of Heartland Dispy rods and the original tips are just now beginning to show wear from the wire line. No need to add the twilly tips right away but the originals won't last forever either. -
I just helped Rusty Rat install his new DR last night and yeah, all the stuff you need is in the box except for the Clincher and all the parts you need for that. L&M Is absolutely right...be sure to run it directly to the battery. Other electrical devices can interfere with the signal. You'll be happy with the unit. Gotta Bite, You can repair the scraped up coating by using liquid electrical tape. It's not as good as the original but will definitely help.

Fair Haven 7/27 & 7/29
Billy V replied to lumberjohn's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the report! Sounds like you found some fish in tight. When you say the bowl off the bluffs are you talking about the flats to the east of the chute? There's another "bowl" that some of us fish but it's not as deep as you said you were fishing and it's not in front of the bluffs. I'm gonna be out on Friday & Saturday and was thinking that the browns sounded like the way to go given how slow the salmon fishing has been on the entire East end. -
4 rod set up ?
Billy V replied to motheroose's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
If you already have the dipsy rigs set-up, then go with them. Dipsys are our #1 producer in the late summer & fall for Kings. Wire is a lot easier to deal with when it comes to the fleas, but if you can keep em clean with what you already have then I'd say don't spend any extra money if you don't have to. -
flea flicker line
Billy V replied to Schools Out's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Same for us. We didn't like the FF at all. It twisted really badly and had a ton of memory. We run 30# Clear Big Game for Kings and have been very happy with it. -
Depth raider signal
Billy V replied to Penn yan 88's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I just got off the phone with Curt from Depth Raider and he suggested this: Take the boat out into deep water and shut everything but the DR off, including the engines. Run the probe down well past the point where you lose signal, say 130Ft. If you lose signal right away you probably have either a bad ground or a connection issue like I mentioned above. If the signal is strong with nothing running, start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes while the DR is on. If the signal is still strong, it's not the engine. Turn on another piece of equipment. If the signal fritz's out when you turn on your FF let's say, then you know that it's interference from your FF that's causing the loss of signal. If you work your way through all of those steps and you don't find anything then it might be time for a new cable & connection to the antenna. -
Downrigger choice - cannon or Scotty
Billy V replied to Pike Hunter's topic in Tackle and Techniques
FWIW, I had three Scotty's on my boat when I bought it and every member of my crew thoroughly disliked them. We went with the new Cannon Mag 10HS and couldn't be happier. That being said, either choice will work quite well for you. It all boils down to personal preference. -
Depth raider signal
Billy V replied to Penn yan 88's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I'm thinking that the issue with mine (I lose signal down past 100' too) is exactly that sponge. Last year I had to replace that connection between the pick-up and the cable to the head unit. Depth Raider doesn't offer a stock replacement so we have a radio shack replacement on it and it's not very good. Might be time for a full replacement cable for me. -
42 second spoon seems to be a hot one
Billy V replied to traveling man's topic in Tackle and Techniques
All I know is that the 42nd spoon has been a great spoon for us for several years now!
