Scott,
We have a new Humminbird 955C GPS unit on the boat this year. The screen resolution is incredible and you can see it clearly in even the brightest of conditions. Ask Yankee Troller what he thinks of it...he was messin' with it on Sunday while we were out. I'm really impressed with it. I can't tell you too much about their transducers, but their screens are great.
Use this knot: http://www.lotsa.org/Wire%20Line%20Knot.htm
We've been using it for a long time and have never had one fail (thanks Tim Brommund!). Works great.
You'll want to use a heavy swivel with a welded ring.
Yeah, you got a prayer with that!! LOL...maybe I'll let you practice spinning it around out in the middle of the bay. You gotta walk before you can run. Thnaks for coming out with us, it was a fun day. Hope you're feeling better.
Nice rod holders!
Rick wasn't feeling too well while he was out with us yesterday. He never complained about our Cannon downriggers once! I think maybe he's thinking of switching back to them after seeing how incredibly fast they can pull an 8lb. ball up from 5 ft!
Way to go, nice report. Yeah, the net would be nice next time! Were there any size to the fish? All browns? From what we caught yesterday and some of the reports I've seen so far this year there seems to be a pretty good class of larger fish out there this year.
Awesome report Jax...way to get the kids involved! They're the future of our sport and it looks to me like you have Cole hooked for life. LOVE the Spiderman poles. Where can I get some of those for my boat?
Today Yankee Troller, Jay and I spent the morning prepping the boat for the season...electronics installed, downriggers mounted, probes repaired, rods, reels and tackle put on the boat, etc. We finally got things ready to go shortly before noon and by 12:30 we had fish slime on the floor for the first time of the year. Jay boated a nice fat brown that came on a firetiger KA-BOOM shiner fished off of a planer board. We found that once the wind began to die down that the color went out of the water and the fishing slowed considerably. We spent a couple of hours running the boat thru her paces and for the most part we're ready to go.
Be careful if you're heading out of Fair Haven as there's a log buried on the west side of the channel just before you get the the chute that you definitely don't want to hit in the dark on your way out. It's sticking up about 6" out of the water.
A couple of pics from today:
I'm SO glad that the season is finally here!

Jekyll,
No backing required. 1000' of 30# will fill that 47 perfectly. I put one wrap of electrical tape around the spool to help give the wire something to bite on when I start spooling. For a knot, I tie a clinch knot and pull it as tight as I can get it. You'll definitely want to spool it on tight...I try and have someone there to hold the spool of wire and keep a lot of tension on it while I reel it on.
Good luck with it this season..wire ROCKS!
The Daiwa Accudepth Plus series is a great bargain at around $49/ea. I ran 2 of the ADP47LC's last year as wire diver rigs and they held up beautifully. I give them a strong two thumbs up!
You should be able to, but may need to add a mounting base to your swivel base if you don't already have one: http://www.cannondownriggers.com/produc ... g=mounting
Make sure you get the mounting base for the Magnum series.
