  1. I wouldn't run copper with a Dipsy. It's designed to be run on its own. Most of us are running 45# (.037) copper (ATOMMIK sells reels already spooled with it or you can buy just the copper from him: http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/reels.htm). The 45# will sink at a rate of about 20 ft per 100 feet out. The 600' copper rig I run will get a spoon down to about 120' when I have all of the copper in the water. You can run it down the chute as mentioned before or off of planer boards.

30# Stainless steel 7 strand wire is what we run for Dipsys. When using a standard sized dipsy set on a #2 setting, you can plan on the dive ratio being about 3:1, depending on your boat speed. So when you have 300' of wire out on a #2 you can guesstimate that it's down about 100 feet or so. 1000' of 7 strand 30# will fill a Daiwa SG47LCA perfectly.

If you don't have either of these setups I'd recommend getting a couple of wire dipsy setups first. They're deadly. After you master that you can tackle copper. Copper is finicky and requires a lot of looking after if you don't want to ruin it.

    Hope this helps!

  2. A lot of the drag also comes from the coated cable on the Moor and the DR. The shallower you fish, the less blowback you'll notice. Believe me, when we're fishing with 140 FOC out we definitely notice the difference between the 12# and the 15# Sharks.

  3. Tom,

FH is all about browns & cohos in the spring....lots and lots of them. Last year the brown action was incredible all spring! There are a few Kings & steelies mixed in there too. Then around the middle-late part of June the Kings start showing up in numbers and then we turn our attention there. We have very consistent action out of FH in my opinion. Do other ports take more Kings throughout the year? You betcha. Especially the western ports. But we catch silly amounts of browns all spring which is just fine by me.

I would also put Oswego and the Oak on my list of consistent ports too.

  4. It got crankin' for us down near Ithaca right about Halloween this year, and then was in full swing for a couple of weeks after that. The buck I shot the day before Halloween was on his way to check some doe in estrus lure I had put out and the weekend after Halloween I saw several bucks running does pretty hard. Lots of scrape and rub activity down this way just before Halloween too.

  5. I got a full two seasons out of my Heartland rods without twilli tips. Given that you're only fishing the lake a few times each year, you ought to be able to get several years out of the top guide on the rod before it needs replacing.

And the Daiwa Accudepth ADP47LC is a great reel for the money. I ran two of them with wire all season long last year and they held up beautifully. 1000' of 30# wire fits on both the ADP47 and the SG47 perfectly. No room for (or need for) any backing material.

  6. I'd love to go with the new Furuno, but they're almost twice as much as the Raymarine and the Garmin. Much as I wish the budget was unlimited, its not and I'm already going to be reaching to get myself into a multifunction display.

I've heard really good things about the Garmin GPS units, but I don't know much about their radar units. I know that the Raymarine GPS and radar is first class all the way. The Garmin comes pre-loaded with all the charts, whereas the Ray doesn't have any charts included, so I really have a tough choice to make.

  7. I've owned 'em both and liked 'em both. Both are super-reliable. Basically it comes down the the display you like. The needle on the Moor is easy to see, but so is the digital display on the DR. Marine General seems to have a good price on the DR.

  8. Will do Steve. I've looked into the Lowrance products pretty thoroughly and I like their GPS/Chartplotters an awful lot, but their radar is pretty new (it came out last year I think). I see in their 2008 catalog that they're offering a new HD radar that can be superimposed over the chart. My only concern is that it's a brand new technology to them. If anyone has seen that setup in action I'd like to know more about it too.

  9. I'm looking for a new chartplotter and I'd like to be able to add radar over the cartography as well. Both of these units will do that. I'd like to have an 8" screen. I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with the GPS and radar functions in particular of these units. I'm not at all interested in their fish finding capabilities since I have a new Furuno 585 for that.

    Thanks!

  10. Wow, I'm glad we don't have those problems where I hunt. Our deer herd is very healthy and I see 10-15 deer every morning or afternoon that I hunt. In my neighborhood alone I see 10-15 deer every night on my way to the house from work. The field down the street is littered with deer. One night I stopped and I counted 52 deer in that field alone.

Shoot all those darn coyotes! I hope the deer herd gets healthier out where you guys hunt.
