shark downrigger weights
Billy V replied to Penn yan 88's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I have chrome and gold, and even a few that I've painted black. At this time of year I run a 15# chrome Shark down the chute with my probe on it, then I run 12# black Sharks on my out/downs. My center rigger (which is almost always my deepest) has easily been my best producing rigger the past several weeks (even last weekend when the fishing was slow, which that site says isn't supposed to happen!). Go figure....I mean I've never denied that I'm a fool! -
What rod for a wire/ dipsey rig?
Billy V replied to Doozer's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
The Daiwa SG47LCA is a great reel for wire applications. I have some that I've run for several years and they've held up beautifully. The other top choice is the Shimano Tekota. They're considerably more expensive than the SG47LCA, but are a great choice. I had some of the old Daiwa Accudepths that I ran as wire reels and they simply didn't hold up under repeated use. They made it through two seasons and then needed to be re-built. I now use them for brown trout fishing. I have two of the new Accudepth Plus reels that I've been testing for Daiwa as wire reels and I've been very, very impressed with them this season. For less than $50, they're a hard reel to beat. Wire divers are probably the most harsh application for any rod or reel, so remember that you get what you pay for, especially with the reel. The Heartland rod has been a great performer for us in wire applications too. -

Thanks for giving us a shout on the VHF! Glad you had a good day. Feel free to give us a shout anytime you're out of FH. -
We'll be there this year too. Jay and I will be at the lake for the entire week leading up to the Challenge, so if you're in Fair Haven then, be sure to swing by the marina and say Hi.

It was pretty rough out of Fair Haven all day & evening on Saturday too. -
Water temps are finally beginning to re-stabilize out of Fair Haven, but the fish are still really scattered. We worked from 120-630FOW the past two days. Best screen was in either 510FOW or 140-180FOW, although neither was great looking. We found 40 degree water down 90 ft. this weekend. That Maui Wowie rig took three or four hits this weekend, mostly in the early morning. I remembered to take a picture of it for you guys: That's a blue double crush glow spinny in front of a Siggs Rigs Maui fly. It's a neat looking fly...it's blue with what looks to be some mirage in it. We also had bites on the Dalmatian/Blue Dolphin, the Original Hammer Time, the JV Cheerleader, and on an 8" R&R Salmon Assassin pulling a Siggs Rigs Green Hypnotist fly. We didn't have a single spoon fire for us, although we never ventured in to look for browns. It was a slow pick this weekend, but if you stick to your plan and put in the time, you should be able to put some kings in the boat.

Speed and Temp Sensor Necessary?
Billy V replied to Baccala's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
What Fosterm22 said....it's a absolute necessity in my book. -
Here's a couple of Apex lures: They're used a lot out on the West Coast for Salmon.

Feedback on electric downriggers (What's your brand?)
Billy V replied to Rich D's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I have the new Cannon Mag 10HS riggers on my boat, and they are SMOKIN FAST!!! The Mag 5HS is a great buy and just as fast as the Mag 10...just no extendable boom or swivel base. For me it's gotta be Cannon all the way. -
You're really gonna want to buy a 1000' section of 30# 7 strand stainless and spool that up. You can find 1000' for a good price here: http://www.howiestackle.com/index.php?categoryID=8 I've been thinking about buying the 10,000 ft. spool so I have it on hand at all times. Bill
-
Yes, the Daiwa SG47LCA will hold 1000' of 30# wire. It fits on there perfectly. that's what I run for my wire reels, and I put that on a Daiwa Heartland Dipsy rod. Works beautifully for me.

Fish Hawk worth the money or are the other alternatives
Billy V replied to waterlogged's topic in Tackle and Techniques
At some point you'll end up with crossed rigger cables & end up scraping the coating off. You can repair it with that liquid electrical tape if it's not torn up too bad, or at the worst, you can buy a replacement coated cable for $35 and re-spool. I just did that on my DR and it was a 15 minute job. I've run a Fish Hawk, a Moor, and now a Depth Raider. I'd definitely buy a Depth Raider or a Moor again. I'd never spend my money on a Fish Hawk again. Some guys like the Cannon too, but I can't comment on that having never run one before. I know Maniac has one and likes it a lot. -
Does this mean that there's a new Penny out in Port Bay?? I've seen this boat and it's in nice shape. It'll make someone a great fishing boat.
-
Glen, I'm glad the board is working out for you. We have a new one on my boat that we really love, especially for the time savings at the end of the day...no more gut bucket runs!

Fair Haven July 28 & 29, 2007
Billy V replied to Billy V's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Hey Charley, I don't know if those spots make that big of a difference or not. But we've been running them in front of a Siggs Rigs (or Maniac) Blue Dolphin (aka Hammer) with a lot of success. The plain white double crush glow has been a good paddle too. I do think that you'll find the set-up to be more productive if you replace that LBB with one of the above fly's. That thing has been a terrific fly. Which boat were you in on Sunday? We had a great morning...and that combo was on fire for us. -
Doozer, Check my report from the weekend. Most of what you want to know is in there: http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishin ... php?t=2572 Bill

Thanks for the report. Has anyone seen the final results of this event? I'm curious to see who won it!

We had a fantastic weekend of fishing out of Fair Haven the past two days. We boated lots of kings, some steelies, and even a laker (I was hoping for a laker-free year too...oh well... :? :?) It was a 100% fly bite for us. Wire divers, riggers and copper down 80-100' all fired multiple times for us. Temps were 80-95' down, and our best down speed was 2.4-2.6mph. Best depths were 250-380FOW. The Siggs Rigs Blue Dolphin behind a Spinny Dalmatian was easily our #1 producer, with a Siggs Green Hypnotist behind a Green Spinny as our second best producer. We ran a new combo (for us anyway) that took multiple fish too. We're calling it the Maui Wowie. It's a blue double crush glow Spinny pulling a Siggs Rigs Maui fly. It's gonna see a lot more time in the water for us this season. I don't have a pic of the combo yet (forgot the camera on Sunday...doh!), but I'll try to snap one soon. Thanks Jax for the Sharpie suggestion...worked great!! Fish were a bit East of the chute. When we ventured west, the screen was pretty blank and the rods stopped firing.

Awesome tip Jax!! It worked for us this weekend too...we mauled the fish on this set-up! -
We run tandems on all of our flys nowadays. I never liked them in the past, but now I just add them to every fly harness over the winter. They definitely help with some of the dropped fish. I don't think they make as big a difference as some guys proclaim they do, but if it'll help put one more fish a week in the boat then I guess I'm all for it.

I honestly don't know what a #2 Dipsy Diver looks like (all I've ever seen is the Magnum). If it's bigger than the standard one, then yes, it will dive deeper. We're able to achieve the depths we need with the standard dipsy and ring, so we haven't really found a need to go with the Magnum dipsy. And since I own a dozen standard dipsys and it's cheaper to buy oversized rings than to buy a new Magnum diver, we've bought the rings to help achieve more depth. I think that you'll achieve similar dive curves with a #1 and an oversize ring as you will with a magnum diver.
