Depth Raider and Cannon Short-Stop
Billy V replied to TrophySeeker's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I have Cannons & a DR on my boat, and yes, you do need to take a small amount of the coating off the cable to make the shortstop feature work. I tried it without taking the coating off and it wouldn't stop at the water. You'll only need to take a half inch or so off to make it function properly. Works great though. Just be careful if you have new Cannons when you're running your probe down way deep. I had mine out 130-150 this past weekend and we ended up peeling a bunch of the coating off the cable when we brought the probe up. Due to the swingback (we even had a 15# Shark out) the cable was touching the top of the pulley cover and we did some damage to the coating. I plan to take a dremel tool to that pulley cover to buy myself some more room. -
I had a Fish Hawk do the same things. When I called the company to ask them about it, they said that it probably needed to be re-calibrated and that I'd have to send it back to them to do that for me. I decided not to send it back and went ahead and bought a Depth Raider.

shark downrigger weights
Billy V replied to Penn yan 88's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Well over 50% of the Pro-Am teams run them. I run them and love them. They track straight and have very little blowback compared to other rigger weights that I've used in the past. -
Hey Guys, I just got off the phone with Matt Siggeman of Siggs Rigs. He's away on vacation and doesn't have access to a computer, so he asked me to pass along his congratulations on your strong Pro-Am finish. Congrats!
-
Hey guys, congrats on your awesome finish! Great box of fish you weighed on day one. Yankee Troller called on Sunday after the weigh in and said he was with you and I thought he meant that he was down at the marina on his boat with you, so I hopped in the truck and drove down there to see you. Sorry that I missed catching up with you. Oh, and YT now owes me dinner.

It doesn't really matter what we call ourselves YT...all you'll need to do is look UP the leaderboard from your name to find us! -

Maniac, Quit surfin' the net and get your game face on brother! It's Pro-Am time!!!! See you soon. -
Here's the Dreamweaver versions that I run. Great spoons!
-
I agree that the spool isn't much of an issue. Just be sure to buy the very best reel you can afford. I don't know much about the Okuma's you're looking at, but you're going to want to make sure they have a first-rate drag system. These kings on wire really put a reel through its paces and will quickly wear out a lesser reel.
-
I have that same 600' setup with a Penn 345 (OUTSTANDING gear ratio...NOT), and we do just like YT said. Big pump, than reel like mad as you lower the rod. We're careful not to lower the rod too quickly so we can avoid any backlash later on. We try to keep as much tension on the line as we can. The stuff catches fish though.

Good luck to everyone this weekend. We're looking forward to having a great time and making some new friends. We'll be docked at Kaitlyn Marine. Please stop over and say Hi!
-
Any time. We use the 27 lb core.
-
Just what it says basically. You'll let out all of the core and some of the backing until the knot that joins the two together is at the water. You'll also hear things like "10 colors plus four passes", meaning all 10 colors of the core plus four full passes on the level wind. Hope this helps. Bill

Congrats boys! I'm curious to hear how the Habanero helped you out this weekend!!!????!!!!

I won't be out this weekend, Al. We're packing up the family truckster and heading to MI to visit my sister for a week. I'll be back out on the weekend of the 7th. -

AWESOME report Al!! Glad you could get back out to that little honey hole again while they were still there. All day long I was wishing I could've been out there with you! -
Wanted to give you guys an update on the knife. I got the 10" Forschner Cimeter and used it for the first time yesterday. What a great knife! I've never been able to fillet Kings that fast before. I'm delighted with it and would recommend it to anyone who's looking. Thanks guys for the advice.

Great report Al!! Wish we could've stayed out there on those Kings, but our friends had to catch a flight to Florida so we had to go. Glad you guys got one for the board. -
It was bound to happen sooner or later.....the big boys showed up in Fair Haven BIG TIME this weekend. We got out for a couple of hours right smack in the middle of the day today and worked 140-210 FOW. Best screen out there I've seen since last fall! Bait and marks all around it.....and they were hungry. We got bit at 100', 110', 115', 125', and 145'. Best spoons for us were the Northern King Die Hard and the Dreamweaver 42nd spoon. Best flys were the Siggs Rigs Green Hypnotist and Green Dolphin behind a Green Spin Dr. We kept this one after he swallowed the lure so deep that we had to straighten the hook out to get it out of him. Keith is married to my wife's best friend and has heard me talk about this type of fishing for almost 20 years. He's a golfer and never made time to get out with me before. But after his first 20 minute battle with a King, I think he's well on his way to being an ex-golfer! Wish I could get out there again tomorrow. If you have some time, I'd get out there and go after them!!!

Thanks Erby! I'll have to give your spoon suggestion a try.......like I need ANOTHER sppon on my boat!! We were just talking about that the other day......you can only run so many at one time.........but I'll still try it and add it to the collection!!
