Pro-Am Tournaments in 2013
Yankee Troller replied to Finders Keepers's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
I think Tom and Warren's should piggy back off each other for an East end series. Tom can grab the dates from the old Oswego Pro Am, and Warrens can take the dates from Sodus. -

Daiwa Saltist Line Counter reel- Any experience with them?
Yankee Troller replied to Sk8man's topic in Tackle and Techniques
The retrieve rate on the 30s will blow you away. I hear ya about doubling as a Seth Green rig, but honestly the 40 is overkill for divers. We've run them for 4 seasons now. We sold our downrigger and wire combos to get new ones (we like to cycle through our gear every few years). I hear the complaints about the line counter, and for some its very uncomfortable, but how I hold the rod it lays right in the crease of my wrist. I had some buddies bring Tekota's on board when we went to Canada, and the slow retrieve drove me crazy! So, I stuck to my side where the Saltist were positioned. Once you get used to the speed you wont go back! -
The ugly was addressed after year 1. That involved bad pulleys and water under the keypads. Both issues have been fixed. We run the black models, while Cold Steel, Thrillseeker, and Billy V ran the tournament series over the last two seasons. In the beginning most problems involved the tournament series. Cannon has been great to work with and all four teams can vouch for that. If they could have gotten the probe to work these riggers would have been unreal! Having that data right on the downrigger was SOOOOOO nice. The depth pre-sets are one of the best features on this rigger. We use them every day. Set a rod and walk away to set another. Jigging your baits has proven effective sometimes, but if you think it will load the boat your smokin trees. Bottom track works very well. We have the CannonLink so on our Humminbird we can see where the riggers are at, which is a nice feature, but you can usually mark your cannon balls to see where your at anyway. The extendable booms are nice too. If you want to use braided line you wont lose your short stop, which is a nice feature.

What do you want to know? We've ran them for two full seasons now.

It looks like a cross between a Centerpin and a Fly Reel. It's a 1 to 1 ratio, and it looks like it would bring a lot of fun to the table. It has a drag, and a wider arbor.

coppers and dipsys

I've never seen an in-line pull anything over a 5 color very good out to the side. I also haven't used the TX-44s. I guess I am just used to how far out to the side I can get a line when slid down an Otter Boat. Personally, I can't stand having to fight an in-line, however I am trying hard to like fishing with them to get more lines out especially on tougher days. Great first post! -
I know a Canadian guy who is running the Islander Mooching reels on Sage Mooching rods. That's a bit rich for my liking. I would like to get a few of these set-ups for when the fishing is stupid to have some fun on. It looks like Okuma is making Mooching combos, but I have never been a huge fan of their stuff. That being said the stuff I have used from them was years ago.

Braddocks Bay sand bar pics. No water !

That place is near and dear to me, but I'm glad it's like that. Maybe it will have some time to rest from the crowds, and maybe those crowds will forget about it next season. Doubtful, but that place takes a beating! -
Does anyone run mooching combos on Lake O for Salmon? I know of one Canadian team who uses them. I think it would be fun. It looks like Okuma is making a nice combo now, but the expensive route looks like an Islander reel/Sage rod.

Introducing deep water ciscos mean we need 1000' coppers to get to those fish feasting on them now. Nice article. Thanks Tim! -

Glen you can get away with 2-3 colors on 27 size Daiwas. I usually take my mono BT set-ups and strip off some line to fit 2-3 colors on there once we get to Wilson.

coppers and dipsys
Yankee Troller replied to reeladdiction2's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I think you need to slow down and perfect running your riggers well with dipsys. Once you have that down start experimenting with Copper. It's nicer to run them off to the side with a planer board rather than down the chute where it can really get in the way. If you are not 1) Tourney fishing 2) Chartering or 3) going to consume the fish I would not run coppers longer than a 300. It will pretty much kill the fish. Copper is an expensive game because you need different lengths to achieve different strike zones. I am in no way affiliated with Torpedos, but for someone starting out with "junk lines" I would buy two wire set-ups and two sets of Torpedo divers. The depth chart is included and you can cover so many depths for much cheaper than investing in 4-10 copper set-ups. They can also double as your 3rd and 4th diver if you want to run 4 wires. -
Ryan has done a Largemouth for me and a Salmon for one of my brothers Ex's. I have seen his other work, and it is pretty good. I know he's won a few awards at shows he's attended.

I remember Dennis Daniels telling us in our Captains Class that it meant 100' or smaller. That being said if they are over 6', and most times 5', you wont catch us out there. Not worth it, beating your gear up, or your life.
