Congrats Brian!

If you have an inboard then a thru-hull is recommended. That Garmin can run an Airmar B60. You'll be much more happy with your sonar's performance going with the B60. I know it sounds over-whelming, and if it is get it professionally installed, but it's just a hole saw in the bottom of the boat. We do it weekly here at Krenzer Marine. Call me at the marina and we can chat if you have any questions.

I bet he's logged more hours on this lake than you have. What about the time he spent on this lake before he decided to get his license? He's fished tournaments on both ends of the lake including the North shore. I'll take a tournament angler over a salty local every single time. He gives up the goods in his reports if they're there, and when it's tough he doesn't sugar coat it. What more can someone looking for information ask for? If you have a problem with what he does take it elsewhere. There's no need for that here.- 23 replies

Cannon Optimum Downriggers - NEW Software Update Available

If you've been looking for Cannon Optimum downriggers, and couldn't find any, it's becasue they were holding off on shipping them until the new software was ready. That being said, they are now available at my distributors. Contact me if you were unable to make it to the Niagara Show this past weekend to purchase some. I can ship direct to you. If you currently own Optimum downriggers you should load software update onto your downrigger(s). This can be done through the Cannon App. This software update fixes the boot loader errors, and adds a feature to bottom tracking called "Max Bottom." Here is a video on how to update the software in your Cannon Optimum Downrigger:

Wherever you can find room. We also have single 36v Lithium options as well.

I'm not sure an Ultrex has the shaft length you will need. I'm guessing you meant Ulterra? This is something we do a lot of at Krenzer Marine. The only way to follow contours will be to pair it with a Humminbird loaded with Lakemaster maps. Reach out to me and I can get you everything you need. If you want it installed we do this all the time as well. Mounting this trolling motor will require a fabricated plate, and deleting at least a section of your bow rail if I had to guess without seeing the boat.

On my Lund it's just easier than having a mast system/planer reels, and finding room in the boat for the big boards. I also use this boat to troll for Walleye. When we Walleye fish we use different size snap weights and deep diving sticks. Our spread looks like a "V", so if the lightest weight/highest presentation takes a fish that is always the furthest rod from the boat. With big boards you can't re-set that line without clearing the others. With in-lines you can re-set it very easily. We use the in-lines on the big boat as well when running multiple types of lead/copper lines on a side with that same "V" formation. Re-setting higher rods on the outside is very easy. Another great time for in-lines is when fishing in April with a 20+ mile an hour South Wind. That wind likes to push planer releases up the tow line for the big boards.

Today a new group from North East PA joined us to harass Lake Ontario Brown Trout. We left the Port of Rochester around 7am and we were met with rollers from the West and lots of icebergs. Water temp was 34 out of the ice, and 32-33 in the ice. There was more color in the water than we would have liked. We tried to fish that ice water for over an hour without a touch. The icebergs were wreaking havoc on our spread, so we picked and ran 12 miles East. We ran a 12 rod spread today. On each side of the boat we ran four flat lined stickbaits behind Offshore OR12 inline boards, a Chinook Diver, and a rod on a downrigger. Glow cupped frogs went well on our Chinook Divers. On our Cannon Downriggers Sea Sick Waddler and Wonderbread took a few fish. Our best flat lined sticks were Bay Rat's Green Frog, Citric Shad, Ghost Face, My Secret, and Stairway to Heaven. We found a good mix of year classes in our catch today. The catch was all Brown Trout with a bonus Cisco. We'll take these Spring-like days for the next month. If you'd like to get out with us shoot us a message and we can reach out when the weather will allow us to get out.

Good luck with Bear Creek! When they redid the launch they made it almost impossible to launch there without the dock in.

Any rule changes coming for 2023?
Yankee Troller replied to hawkeye625's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I run the Orleans County Open. Last year (2022) I brought back observers after a few years without them due to covid. I was told by a few captains after the event that if observers were required in 2023 they would not be participating. I always felt having observers kept up the integrity, but I also realize it's a PIA to find a reliable observer. I think part of the problem is people grab anyone they can and don't pay them. We've had great luck finding people looking to learn the fishery, and we pay them well. Some people will always find ways to cheat, but it eventually catches up to them becasue they get greedy. That won't stop me and my team from participating in these events and seeing where we stack up to the competition on a given day. Tournament fishing is more than who wins and loses, becasue the reality is no one is making money fishing tournaments. Tournament fishing cuts down on the learning curve when it comes to our fishery. For example, the stuff we learned fishing the east end of Lake Ontario early on has helped us win on the West end. Having to fish out of a new port, or a port where the fishing isn't great makes you a better all around fisherman. I'll end with this. It's easy to bash tournaments and say you wont fish them becasue of cheaters. In reality you complaining about less than 1% of your competition. The other 99% is great and you will probably meet life long friends fishing them. I know we have.
