We installed a Lowrance outboard pilot here at the marina a few months ago. Seemed like a pretty easy install. Something to look into since you already have Lowrance MFD's. -

I feel the lake guys just keep getting the short end of the stick. The DEC is the one who told us the Chinook is managed for the lake and the Steelhead are managed for the tribs. If that's the case we should protect our fish, and make sure the best of the best get into that hatchery. Here would be some of the benefits of closing down the tribs from Aug 31 to Oct 31 would: Get the best fish/genetics to the hatchery Make sure the hatchery gets it's eggs on low water years Alleviate the need for DEC assets to be present, and take less phone calls Put more food in the tribs for the trout coming in behind Keep more trout in the river for the trout guys This really is what would give the trib guys what they want with this new regulation. They want bigger Trout. Well, when the goon squad is up during Salmon season the biggest and best trout are taken out of the river. Get rid of the disgusting crowd that lacks ethics Create less stress on the Chinooks so the ones who do spawn have a better product Let some of the BT spawn so they aren't ripped out of the fishery for the sole purpose of taking their eggs

Regulation change to steelhead limit on Lake Ontario
Yankee Troller replied to reelxite's topic in Open Lake Discussion
You're right, but there are a few reasons for this. First reason being the DEC stocked above target levels for a few years, and secondly a huge die off die to Vitamin B deficiency. Nothing either group caused. I'm sorry, but when you can hook 15-40 trout a day on a trib how many more do you need? At least with the lake guys, especially charters, we kill the first legal limit and we're off the water. -
I'd say your limited to 100-200' coppers. Google those specific reels capacities and then compare those to Saltsit or Tekota's. That will give you a better idea. For example, on a Saltist 50 I can get 150yds of 50lb braid and up to 300' of 45lb copper.

I agree with you about the impact. However, your perception of charter guys is off. 95% of my charters and most I see are 4 clients. We're only allowed to carry a max of 6. Trout unlimited has been seen with the leaders of the trib movement in closed door meetings with DEC officials. We'll never know what was discussed in those closed door meetings. We have some of the largest Trout in the country in our backyard with a very lucrative special interest group in their back pocket. I love how for many years the charter guys ran the pen projects with donated and personal time and money. However, in the last year 100,000 was found to help the trib guys get started on pen projects. I also read where the DSR on the Salmon river is making changes by only allowing fly fishing on certain days, and making people move drifts after a certain amount of time. I know the guy who runs the place. He's told me numerous times he has enough guys who would pay $20,000ea to hang out, smoke cigars, catch one or two fish and be content. They wouldn't have to allow the masses in who buy daily and yearly passes. With more land going from public to private up there I can see where this whole trib thing is going. -

Good to know. I get asked about mechanical drive AP's a few times a year and knew about the Sitex option. I just never knew anyone who had one. -

So, becasue they say it will help we should trust them? Do you know about the special interest group called in to help grease the DEC's palms on this? -

Stick with a Garmin AP and you wont have to get an AP disply. You can control it right through your Garmin head unit. Does the boat have hydraulic steering? -
I run 15lb test on my BT set-ups that have taken many kings. For Salmon I run 20lb test when running spoons, and 25lb test when pulling paddles/meat/flies. I'm gonna say your set-ups will work just fine!

ML 7'-9' rods make great BT rods. I was given a couple of the Wilderness rods and they didn't last. I run Daiwa Great Lakes rods for most everything else and I'm still not a huge fan of the fit and finish of those. I hate to say it, but Daiwa's quality has gone down considerably. I'm a huge Daiwa guy, but these Great Lakes specific rods IMHO are low end. You look at their Bass line ups and they look great!

Shark Cannonballs Extreme Shark
Yankee Troller replied to Earl28's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I will admit the quote to "laugh at someone who says a Shark weight attracts fish" was harsh. My apologies to the OP.
