  1. It's not just "how deep do I plan on fishing." My recommendation is to spool it up with whatever Cannon suggests so your counter is accurate.
  2. I don't dislike the shark weights. Matter of fact I was one of the original guys who asked for, and discussed with the owner, a 20lb shark option. 10 years ago the owner came around and asked all the tourney teams if they believed the facets on the shark cannonball attracted fish into their spread. I was the only guy to say there was no way I could prove that theory. I hoped they would, but what scientific evidence could I get to prove this theory? This information was listed on his website, and still might be. Everybody else he asked said yes the facets attract fish. I don't lie to other anglers nor do I make up BS to sell a product. Most of the companies that sponsor me I used prior to that sponsorship, and a good amount of them came to me instead of me seeking them out. As for your downrigger dig, again another company that came to me, there are many companies who can carry a 20lb weight. Traxstech, Big John, Scotty, and Magnum Metal all can handle 20lb weights. I'd say the only one who can't is Walker. Let's get to facts that we can prove. A shark cannonball has less blowback than most downrigger weights. That's something easily prove-able. I've also tested 3 different shaped 15lb weights on my sonar to see what one would send back the best sonar signature. Here was what I found. The worst sonar signature is a pancake or the new wide pancakes. Best sonar signature is a Shark weight. That's putting each weight on the same downrigger, and keeping the course and speed the same.
  3. If anyone tells you they attract fish please laugh back at them. Some people will say anything to get discounted products, and be a part of a pro staff. There is absolutely no way to prove this theory. Here's what I can tell you. I feel Shark Cannonballs cut back severely on blow back. I can also attest to them sending back a good sonar signature. For fishing in the top 50' you can get away with 12lb weights. 50-125' 15lb weights. Deeper than 125' and I recommend 20lb weights. These are strictly my recommendations and I am not a fan of cable blow back.
  4. I've had good success with the Daiwa Great Lakes Leadcore rods. They come in two sizes (8'6" & 9'). I like the 8'6" rod for my short cores (2-5 colors). 9' rod is great for 10 colors of lead to about 200/300' of copper. https://FishUSA.rv5k.net/R3Y22
  5. Here is data we saw from a DEC presentation a few years back about the Caledonia hatchery fish. Form you own opinion from it. I'm not saying we shouldn't try another study now that we have a marking trailer to give us better data. The lake has changed a lot. The Canadians seem to have no problems trying "studies" so why can't we? I can tell you the "eggs in one basket" doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy.
  6. I like Stinger's stinger size and Bay Rats 3.5. Especially in skinny water. I find the DW SS tend to float a little and with long leads it's tough to get them down. Over deeper water with shorter leads and behind divers they are another great spoon. Those are really all we ever use when fishing BT. Sometimes we'll go a little biger to Stingrays and DW Reg spoons.
  7. It may have been built in the 30's, but was there not 800,000 recently put into it for an Atlantic program? If any of you ever fished Canadian waters in the fall you'd appreciate having a fish not raised in water going into Lake Ontario.
  8. Pugsly's on 104 in Ontario or Arney's on Sodus Bay are two in my neck of the woods.
  9. My brother bought some (poor guy has a tackle addiction) and we have used them from time to time. They work great! ONly problem with them is once they get hit you have to bring them back in and fix them. The fish bend them. A new bait came out this past season called the SOKO Prime Cut. That has a thicker piece of metal in it and it wont bend like an MC Rocket. Both work well. MC Rocket's have the glow patterns down if you're looking for that low light presentation. All that being said we've run them from time to time on charters. Come tourney time straight Familiar Bite.
  10. Here's the quick response: Caledonia isn't allowed to accept eggs from Lake Ontario due to VHS concerns. Fish from Caledonia get stocked all over the state and the DEC doesn't want to spread the virus. Everything that gets brought into SR hatchery goes back into Lake Ontario from what I understand. The DEC won't build or use another hatchery for Lake Ontario to curb the "all eggs in one basket" theory, but the feds had no problem building a sub 1 million dollar hatchery downstate for Atlantic Salmon that will go into Lake Ontario. Atlantic Salmon milt/eggs are taken from LO to this hatchery. I think that's a more viable option for a second hatchery than getting Caledonia back.
  11. Cormorants and turin/gulls feasting on released fish is a great theory, and something that isn't helping the situation. Good point Vince. I will concur the staging fish are still at these Canadian tribs. However, I think those North shore tribs tend to have cooler water both in the lake and coming down them. Those fish also start staging by the end of August.
  12. I heard they made one, but I can't find it on their website. Is there another brand you like better?
  13. What rod are you running your Mooching reel on?
  14. Also, per the DEC and their new BS regulation the Salmon are now managed for Lake Ontario and not the tribs. The trib/pier fisherman asked for regulations on our lake Steelhead limit and Steelhead are now managed for the tribs. I don't feel your sorrow for the lack of Salmon at the pier heads anymore.
  15. I'm sorry my post offended you, but I think you took it the wrong way. I can't control the Fall fishery and neither can the DEC, apparently. Lets face it the lake has changed whether you want to believe it or not. The initial poster was a boat guy complaining about it, but he's had an above average Spring Salmon fishery the last few seasons. That's really all I was pointing out. I didn't belittle anyone or any group.
  16. I don't know why you guys are complaining about catching rotten September/October Salmon. You seemed pretty happy when most of your Spring Salmon catches (east of the Niagara Bar) were way above normal the last few years. I think the lake is changing and some of you are too stubborn to change with it. Personally, I'll take a better lake-wide Spring Salmon fishery over a better mud marlin season any day.
  17. Don't hesitate to call over to Octopus and talk to Gary. He's is very knowledgeable, and will tell you everything you need for the job. If you feel it's above your expertise we can install it at Krenzer Marine in Sodus Point.
  18. My birds will mark it if there is a sharp break in a short distance. More so in Late July-August.
  19. Current line, Sea Flea band, or most likely a sharp temp brake. Did you go deeper than it with your probe?
  20. We've run Stealthcore for a few years now and have no complaints other than colors fading. I hear that's been addressed. We use the Willis Knot as well and it's easy to tie and a rock solid knot!
  21. Tony's the man!
  22. I have this set-up and it's awesome! I had the spooler for years, and bought the one for the reel/drill this Winter. When you're doing 6-10 reels the drill is nice!
  23. I've been happy with my AFTCO Hydronaut I bought from FishUSA.
  24. I've done this on Lake Erie. It's money!
  25. I do miss a good Coho fishery. It's been dismal for a while.
