  1. Limited options this morning due to weather, so we targeted #browntrout and were successful with our @CannonFishing https://t.co/QvUY7hnWXF

  2. Well said! No ones ever satisfied anymore. This is a standing derby with no questions about payout and a rules list that has pretty much gone unchanged for years. These derbies aren't easy to pull off as seen earlier this year by someone else. The old saying "shut up and fish" is kind of where I'm headed with this post. LOL I'd still like to see a Lake Trout division with 200 spots so Brian Gamble and Jim Piano can get rich!
  3. Sometimes strategy plays into it. Me for example, I tried to grind out 3 nice stagers on the inside. Ended up with 2. Never got my third. Could have easily gone offshore and grabbed mostly 2 and maybe a 3 yr old Salmon and some Steelbows. Hindsight, says I probably should have done that becasue on Friday my brother grabbed a 27 on the morning charter out there, and I took a 25 on the afternoon charter. Strategy is what makes tourney fishing so much fun. Congrats to all that did well on a tough day!
  4. The third leg of the KOTO was this past Saturday. We had 21 teams enter, but tough fishing led to a lot of them not weighing in fish. Reminder KOTO 4 will be held September 4th.
  5. You can now find @FAMILIARBITE at Captains Cove when you're at the Oak. https://t.co/gFKhmCSpwV

  6. So do most south shore guys!
  7. You aint seen cormorants until you've fished near the Toronto islands, or I guess the Galoo's back in the day.
  8. FishUSA is now carrying them
  9. Thanks for the referral bud. The kids were a lot of fun!
  10. I really hate to agree with Jerry, becasue I usually don't, but I've fished over there 2 times a year for the past 6 years and never caught a Lake Trout. Most of the fishing that goes on over there is in 150' or less, and since were all over there fishing a Salmon event its flies and meat programs. We're also fishing a larger piece of structure than the Niagara Bar, and the bait is usually pretty incredible on the North shore. I crossed Lady O twice this year from Olcott to Bluffers and never marked bait the whole way. I also didn't mark a single pod of bait in 3 days of fishing over there this year. If you asked me in May/June if we had a bait problem I would have said you're nuts. July was shocking as we didn't mark much at all. Maybe 1 pod per trip. August (after the blow) it seems to be spread out from inshore to offshore. A lot? No, but you don't have a problem marking pods.
  11. Seems like they work better when a new slug of fish come in. Doesn't hurt to put one out there though!
  12. We're not GREAT brown trout fisherman, but we do around the same speed no matter what we chase. On our Moor Subtroll we keep it between 1.8 and 2.1. On our Smart Troll that's 2.5-2.9.
  13. We use regular ol' LJ divers. It's the wire we use that gets us a much better dive curve proved with a Smart Troll. American Fishing Wire 30lb Camo 7 strand is a tick larger than Malin 20lb. You just need to be real careful with it not to ever let it get loose on you. It will pig tail after you start using it and letting it loose may cause kinks.
  14. Quick report! Rough couple of days this weekend! Saturday - Made the decision to stay inside and fish BT given horrible offshore reports. Fished 70-80' of water from Troutsburg to the pump house that's West of Sandy. Cleaned 8 BT, lost 5, and tossed back 4 small ones. Early on Stinger Sea Sick Waddlers were going on our Cannon downriggers, and Frost Bites were going on our wires. After the sun came up we took fish on FishUSA DW Martel SS's. Sunday - Canceled the morning due to weather, so on our afternoon trip we ran out to the 30N line and fished NW out to the 33N. 33N line was loaded with fish and bait. Mostly smaller Salmon and steelbow. Moonshine Shelly snacks and Carbon 14s were going on our Cannon downriggers 55-80'. Familiar Bite went a few times down 100-120' as well. DW 72 Monty went on our divers out 175'.
  15. If you can make them stronger than the BJ's that'd be great. Broke way too many of them in the past where the tow rope goes.
  16. After last nights meeting at the Irondequoit Fish and Game I left feeling that if they make any adjustments it's just not a Chinook only adjustment. I also left feeling like it wont be much of an adjustment, and that it will whole heartily be reversed once we get through those two bad classes of Alewife. We don't have water quality issues like Huron and Michigan. Our adjustments are being made to offset the two harsh winters we had that were abnormal in our weather pattern. One of my concerns about the extra Fall fingerling LT stockings was answered and that program has stopped. It wasn't successful. I did try for a lifted season and increased limit, but was met with hesitation by Mr. Lapan. I'd still like to see the season lifted. They are the only fish with a season out there. I do my part to harvest them, and would do so longer given the chance. If people are truly concerned that the LT pressure is too much then please take your limit while you're out there. Every bit helps.
  17. Those are the same guys that fish one port all season and complain about the fishery. The same ones who promise Kings and Steelbows, but start their morning off flying cowbells and peanuts. That's why I get calls weekly about catching Salmon after they walk off a LT boat in July and August. No one calls specifically for LT. I do push kids into September and let them catch LT becasue they can handle them and the action is quick. I do fish for them. There are too many!
  18. Perfect! Should make for some great lake effect snow squalls to snowmobile in come Winter!
  19. Mulatto, Watermelon, Silver Green, and SSW. A few Summers Baby Shower was pretty good offshore!
  20. If Michigan can do it. So can we! Lake Michigan sets a president by reducing lake trout stockings, raising lake trout limits and ending closed seasons on them.. MSSFA continues to work with the DNR in its efforts to manage the sport fishery utilizing science based tools to insure the sustainability of our Chinook fishery. MSSFA had discussions with the DNR last week and again twice this week about a new proposal to achieve the equivalent forge savings in Lake Michigan by reducing the lake trout plant from 3.19 million in 2017 to 2.54 million ; a 21% reduction in lake trout. The new proposal opens the door to increasing the Chinook plant in 2017 from 690,000 up to 900,000; a 50% reduction rather tham the originally proposed 62% reduction. There was concensus for this new proposal at the Lake Michigan Committee meeting on Tuesday. In addition, states that now have a two lake trout bag limit per day will move to allow 3 lake trout per day and Michigan will extend the season for catching Lake Trout to all year long outside the tribal boundry waters. Indiana will not suspend Chinook stocking as previously reported but will stock 60,000 Chinook in 2017. I'd be for LT stocking cuts, increased LT limits, and the season lifted. 2015: 1.7mil Chinook Stocked 975,000 LT Stocked LT live longer and gouge on Alewife populations. To refute Jerry's comment I was all for allowing 5 LT at the Oak Open when we started it 3 years ago. A few people were not happy with killing that many LT. Same for the KOTO series. A few people were not happy about killing all those LT as well as having to fish for them just to get a few big fish to weigh.
  21. I'd say NO unless you're looking for a disaster. Even on a 2 setting those divers get out to the side. Copper tangles are no fun, and it costs you lots of fishing time. Just run one copper down the chute or put it out on a planer board.
