You will be fine. I have been out last two weekends at long point with my trophy and two weeks ago it was real low last week was much better and with the rain this week we should be almost normal by derby time.
-
I hope to do some fish on the grill. This year I might bring some hotdogs just in case
-
Sounds good. I can reach over for one. We are in #28
-
Wayne , we got the last slip last year and it was # 1 , We sleep on the boat and that slip will beat you up. The seawall slips go from #1 at the chute to 40 on the north end of the seawall. Get as far down as you can.

I think the problem is they are painting over silver plate. I have some stingers that are white background color on both sides and the paint does not come off. Chicken wing with silver plate back is lucky to last 4 hrs. in the water. Wes

You do not get silver fish much up north but you can have a ball with lakers.

Magnum Dipsey. How deep will they go??
quality time replied to Mike M's topic in Tackle and Techniques
We use the mag rings and we have come up with zebra mussles in 130' with wire out 250' on "1 setting. We run 4 dipsys and never had an issue with the mag on #1 setting. I do understand that we are not dealing with that big of waves on Cayuga . The high dipsy is a # 1 on 3 setting with mag ring. The only time we have had tangles is when weeds foul the dipsy and it no longer planes the way it should. The charts are for dipsy with no ring, add 20% for standard ring 30% for mag or monster ring. Our troll speed is 2.2 to 2.7 at the ball. Wes -
We had a few for the grill this weekend. Had 3 fish hooked in the gills.
-
We had the same thing happen to us with 5' log hooked in the middle at 90" It was running to the side felt like real good head shake we even cleared all the other lines and we never do that! Had a good laugh when we got our first look.
-
I see you use the boga or lip grip. We have much better luck getting a good release on the fish when we do not net them
-
Nice job Kade! Hope to see you and your dad at B and b weigh-in. Wes

That last youtube shows proper copper rod technique. Not sure how sticking the tongue out helps though It was a great day on the water. Many more ahead

Nice! -
Yep! I think the one we got is #28. We got a new crewmember that has been doing a great job. Should give Ben and myself more time to work the program.

Scott, How is the launch looking?

Hit The north end 5/6 with the wife, Ben and copper Liz. I think I might have to buy Liz her own copper rod she loves it so much. We had a steady pick most of the afternoon. We had a good run of big fish at first with around 5 or 6 over 8lbs in a short time. We did not lose any fish and ended up around 20 fish. We had some bad luck with gill hooked fish and ended up keeping 3 for the grill. Ben made a good call releasing all our early caught fish . Hope Ben post some pics. Most fish 100' down over deep. 600' copper caught over half the fish. mtn. dew spin doctor did its share as well. 1 fish 300' copper and a couple on rigger/ spoons. Wes

So a guy runs an add " Tooth extractions 10 dollar donation " would you go to him. The rules are in place for a reason and these are the things that set us apart from third world nations that have no rules. These same rules protect this guy as well. Lets say he took someone out for instruction and the client or student as you would say has a fish spit the hook and the hook puts the clients eye out. Lawyers would have a hay day with that and the kid who just wanted to make a buck would stand to lose everything. It takes many qualitys to be a good charter captain . Safety comes first!

I bumped a rod out of the rod holder and my boy said, I think it is still hooked to the otter board tow line. Sure enough we got the rod back How big of piece of foam would I need for my 600'copper rod. That might need a full size funnoodle Kidding aside that is a good idea. The only trouble is I am always trying to please the derby gods so donations to the gods are a must!

We have caught hundrads of fish on the wire but he was asking what to use on the riggers. Wes

Looks like pfd's for your rods. You do not need them after may 1st

I do not fish those lakes so I'm not sure about the fleas. I use 30lb. power pro and 8 or 10lb fluro leader. If those lakes are real clear water the lighter the better. If your drag is set correct you should almost never break your line. Much of the tackle these days are made in china and we have had snap swivels and split rings fail. That would never had happened 30 years ago. I try to stick with made in usa stuff and it cost much more but saves you from breaking off on a big fish. Drag should be set around 40% of line breaking strength. A good way to test is tie on a 4 lb weight with the weight on the floor lift your rod a tighten the drag untill you can just lift the weight. After some trial and error you will be able to set the drag by feel. Super braid has no stretch so the only give you have is the fluro leader and the drag. To test terminal tackle if you use 10lb leader tie on 10lb weight to swivel or split ring and lift to see if they hold. I was surprized at brands that will not hold up. As far as marinade try State fair or Salimida, you can get two batchs from one bottle. Wes

cayuga 5-2 on the blue bubble
quality time replied to final flight's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Good job as always Are we going to see you at B and B Wes -
Braid works great on riggers. We do not run it because of spiny water fleas in Cayuga . Low stretch means good hook sets and less blow back. As far as cooking lakers I am not much for smoked lake trout but love them cooked on the grill. Keep your fish on ice from the time you land them. We marinade for 30 minutes in lemon garlic marinade. Make a foil boat to place fish in leaving the top open. sprinkle some raw suger or brown suger over the top of the fillet and place on grill turning fish one time total cook time is less than 6 or 8 minutes. If my dill is up in the garden I put some dill weed on as well. I only cook on charcoal and add a few pieces of apple wood to give a slight smoke taste Wes

Our gps is .2 mph faster than speed at ball. Believe in your instrument. These lakes have huge currents at times. We had one day near T-falls that we had 3mph current. We saw whirlpools just out from the point. That water moves much more than you think.Thats why we need speed at ball. That day we had a heck of a time getting dipsys tangled. Wes

They had a case like this in Florida. If you take buddies out fishing they can chip in for gas but second you tell them the amount to chip in it is a charter.
