Looks like I may be in search of 2 bodies for the second weekend of the Spring Derby. I will know more in the next month, but if the vacancy holds out, I would be glad to take a couple of brave souls. I will be fishing out of Oak Orchard, running west if need be. I can provide the boat, gear, and lodging in return for a share of expenses. Send me a PM if you think you may be interested. If nothing else its a great chance to meet and exchange ideas and techniques.

For my wire rods, I first put 100' of braid backing and attached the wire with an albright knot (look for the knot link). This seems to hold well. THere are several other links dealing with spooling and such.

I registered about the same time and also haven't heard from them. I was beginning to wonder about it myself.

I've had good luck with the cabelas rods across the board. I have both dipsey and rigger rods. I did have one rod break last year and they replaced it without hesitation.

I will be focusing on the Oak and fishing the brown water with the occasional run to Wilson or the Bar.

What I said, or at least what I meant was that a cell tower within the wilderness areas of the Adirondack Park (note, the entire park is not a wilderness area) kinda goes against the intent not to mention the State Constitution. NYS does have a remarkable Trails system up there for Sleds, but if you are to venture as you say, 50 miles off the road then there are certain risks that you understand before entering. As for the accident you refer to, its unfortunate but it happens. Personally I hope they are alright. What I think is tragic is that you seem to feel that NY forested lands can't be used or enjoyed without a cell phone strapped to your hip. 20 years ago they were practically unheard of, how did people ever cope?? As for the ATV trails on NYS Forest Land, aside from handicapped access permits, I really don't believe you can ride on State Land. You may be referring to some of the recent aquisitions thru conservation easements, in those cases, i am not sure what the regs are. Like you I am all for getting out and enjoying what the State has to offer, but some areas do have limitations, and that has to be recognized before you enter. (but the groomers are pretty cool, got to ride on one a few years back '98 after the ice storm) FWIW I am a Forester and part time logger, my words aren't just air, I can walk the walk. I know what risk is. This post started over Grannis, not my view on Adirondack Policy. Actually, Grannis would probably be a good allie to the those that fish the big O, his regulatory agenda would only help to clean the waters and sustain our fishery. As for other issues, I have my doubts. And so does the State, they are holding off his confirmation until they gather more info.

I haven't had time to read all the links on that petition, but I refuse to sign it due to the quote below. "Further, Mr. Grannis has worked to DENY access to NYS Residents to public trails and parks, enjoyed by many thousands of hunters, anglers, snowmobilers, ATV enthusiasts, campers, hikers, climbers, et al., while denying basic protection services in the Adirondack State Forest, through his continued blocking of construction of Cell Phone Towers to provide communications coverage to NYS residents and non-residents alike, who enjoy and learn from the natural beauty of this region. Through his actions to block such construction of very non-invasive cell phone towers, two individuals lost their lives as they could not call for help. If you can't go without a phone, buy a satillite phone, works anywhere. I also see a poorly masked attempt to group ATV's and Snowmobiles with other user groups. ATV's on State Land? Ain't never going to happen.... I don't see Grannis as a breath of fresh air to the Agency, at least not to the forest and wildlife divisions. But we as sportsman have to pick our battles better. Even with his past voting record, he was representing his constituants, who are anti hunting, anti trapping and very poorly informed. Where Grannis may excell is pollution issues and other environmental concerns. I am not trying to way anyone elses opinion, just offering my two cents.

Rather than having 2 different setups for spring, I am planning on using 20# Fireline for my downrigger and planer lines and leaving that set up on until mid summer. The way I see it is that 20# is plenty strong and still has a small diameter for visibility issues. Downside? Its expensive! Inaddition I have 2 wire rods and 2 wire rods with 100' mono leaders for slider dipsey's.

In a perfect world your downrigger weight would hang perpendicular to the rigger. Blowback is a dose of reality. Due to drag/resistance against the weight and wire, the weight will be somewhere other than beneath the boat. How far back depends on speed, depth, size and shape of weight.

I'll apologize upfront if this is too simplistic. Run 2 more wire rods! If that is whats working for you, go with it!

I fished Keuka last year and caught lots of lakers all clones, 3 lbs and barely knew they were there. I can't speak for Seneca or Cayuga, but my hunting partners, first mate caught a 38lb slob on lake Erie 2 summers ago. That would be one reason for fishing the great Lakes over the Finger lakes

I am using hotspot (I think), its pretty good for shoreline but the bathymetry is general at best. For Keuka, you may be on the 50'contour on the graph, but in 65 fow in reality. But it does work for finding landmarks as such

One thing to be cautious of is when you break them down. Don't tighten the line to the point where it wears against the egde of the insert. It will cause your line to fray. As pointed out by many, fleas can be a seasonal problem, but its nice not worrying about planer tow lines in chopping conditions. They have a place on my boat, just have to know your limits (like anything else)

I'll have to look into that, I have six of them and so far haven't had a problem. Although I have to confess most of my experience has been either spring fishing or Lake Erie walleye. So those comments about fleas, may be 100% correct.

Good question, and I don't know. But in their favor, I would think if your fish generated X pounds of pressure it would be better to have it distributed over the length of the rod rather than 10 small points.

I have run them on big boards, the plus being that you don't have to worry about the planer line, or another rod for that matter, catching a guide, pulling the rod from the holder and causing a rod to fall into the drink. As for re-stringing them after a break off, just keep the stiff line they give you in your box and it shouldn't be much of a problem.

A friend of my entered the dark world of float fishing. Its the bastard child of a noodle rod and fly reel. allows for better drifts using skein and a bobber w/ just enough shot to keep the bait just off the bottom, one of many combinations. Basically it does what a cane pole used to do, but costs a lot more~! Some day I'll give it a try~ sad, but true
