I caught one by accident as did my friend while perch fishing with live fatheads. I did read though that they bite better at night and prefer lively and larger minnows. We caught ours in approx 20ft of water. Maybe Sodus would be your best bet. If I were to really go after them I suppose I would set tip ups without leaders and have the minnows 6-12 inches from the bottom and jig for them in the meantime after dark. I did eat the burbot and cooked it the poor mans lobster way. It was realllllllly good!

Last weekend I pulled my first burbot through the ice at Chaumont Bay. The perch have cooled off considerably. Not sure why but I hope it heats back up. Pulled a 9.1 lb pike for the Clayton derby but didn't make the top 10 with it. A 18.4 lb pike won it but I dont know where it was caught. Will be going out tonight for walleye on Chaumont. Last past two times evening/night fishing for walleyes was a bust but I have been giving it a shot b/c a select few have been getting them around dusk.

http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/intrn ... ndx.html#d The Migratory Bird Treaty Act is a Federal law and therefor DEC enforced!!! Double-crested cormorants are protected under this law. Are they considering opening a seaon on them? It is only a consideration at this point. If they were a migratory GAME bird they would have a OPEN season. The only exception in NYS is house sparrows, European starlings and pigeons (rock dove). Your right that the FEDS institute the Migratory game laws and they should since they are managing migratory species populations that exist across state lines. Just common sense. That why you buy a Federal Duck Stamp to be able to participate. Only gov't agencies are allowed to control populations of these birds with whatever measures they deem appropiate. You keep on looking for those open season dates tirelessly. You are not doing anything but confusing your fellow fisherman and potentially getting them into trouble.

Borderline, I make that mistake too and call them "double-breasted cormorants". Now that bird would be an even uglier one! I was waterfowl hunting with a newbie and he was confusing juvenile cormorants with ducks. I was chuckling on the inside saying "chalk one up for the smallies". Outwardly I told him he ought "put a couple of rocks on that bird and sink it". Remember that double crested cormorants are migratory birds and protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and DEC law. Please let us know what Cornell has to say. They are the experts worldwide.

Borderline, The double-crested cormorant is a native species and the one of concern to great lakes fisheries. I am well aware of the 6 species in the family Phalacrocoracidae that are established in north america. The double-crested cormorant's population along with many other bird species (bald eagle etc.) was hammered in the 70's from DDT poisoning. Since banning of such chemicals double-crested cormorants, bald eagles etc. have re-bounded. There are many examples of native species that cause problems when left unmanaged relative to management objectives. For example crows and whitetail in urban settings or double crested cormorants in the great lakes. It is a common misconception to deem this species an exotic. I am 100% on board with controlling (not wiping out) this species population relative to fisheries management. Just wanted to clarify. "The last word in ignorance is the man who says of an animal or plant: 'What good is it?'" Aldo Leopold - A Sand County Almanac

Cormorants are actually a native species.

The ice is dictating where you can go right now. On tuesday I was told that after I left the ice two guys lost their shanty, pail of perch and all their gear through the ice and were jumping cracked ice to get back to shore. They were on a good 4" of ice but the combo of a stiff sw wind and a new 10" of wet snow broke up alot of the ice that was being fished that day. We have been parking on Pt. Salubrious Rd about half way down and walking out to Johnson Shoal about 2000 ft out in 14-19 foot of water. Follow the locals out on the ice so you can avoid bad ice, trespassing ordeals etc.

Happy New Year everyone! Chaumont Bay has been red hot for perch. The size has been great this year in comparison to last. The average perch being around 8". Lots of accidental pike hookups on the perch rods. I saw a 10.5 lb walleye weighed in yesterday at the Harv's fishery where we sell our perch. The guy said it hit his perch rod and he had lost a 5lber at the hole a little earlier. A few days ago the perch quit and I was staring down my hole looking for the big pike that had probably chased them out and I saw a monster walleye swim by. Remember that last year the pending state record walleye was caught through the ice in Chaumont. I'm looking for any info on the ice conditions in Sodus Bay. Might try a waterfowl hunt two weekends from now. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks gambler, I would like to know who fishes with 250lb power pro to begin with...must be those marlin chasin boys....thanks for all the input from everyone!! -
I should say "I dont fish Erie, but dont cancel out Quinte or Mud Bay as options". The NYS pending record walleye was caught ice fishing out of Chaumont bay this year. There are definately great ice charters out of Quinte, but you would have to go through the hoop-la of getting a Canadian license.

Put the boat in at 5AM caught first one at the bridge around 5:45AM, hooked the second at 6AM and dropped her at the boat. Both salmon were large ladies. About five other boats out before sunrise. Fished til 7:30AM. Saw no other fish caught, but they were jumping everywhere. Saw some jumping and throwing lampreys off them that were the size of the salmon...gross. Threw some reflective tape on a firetiger crankbait to entice em'.

Very interesting...thank you HeavyA for your response. That is bad news for walleye fishing (like a big spread) but I guess it doesnt really matter a whole lot for salmon. Guess I will just run inline boards for walleye when I have enough folks in the boat to run multiple rods. Thanks!!! -

Hey Rod! Havent taken her fishing just cruising...Having a friend help me who is very busy at the moment with setting the Lund up. I think you will be a very happy guy out in our neck of the woods. You can fish for everything in this area. I plan to get a slip for next year at Hidden Harbor which is located on the point of Pt Penisula. Great location...can swing over to the charity shoals or over to Galoo in no time. Right in the middle of all the action! The boats name is "BIG LOTS" silly I know, but it makes me laugh. I am ordering 5$ hats from the stores website. Laughing right now actually. How much line (feet) fits on your planer board reels? Will keep you posted! -
Black River/Oswego
Kingfisher06 replied to baytech05's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I am familiar with the Black River. Right now you could catch some of the very early run Kings in the river. It is a night bite, especially in the AM right before the sun rises. During the day you can cast your arm off without a hit. There are walleyes in the Black right now, but many are throwbacks. My favorite for the salmon in the Black is the largest jointed shad rap in the firetiger color. Bring some extra trembles. The big boys run up first....set your drag if your using braided line which I suggest. -

Hey Clarke/Team Lucky Enuff! In the process of setting up the new boat. Boy am I bleeding green doing it! The boat is just great. I cant beleive how well these Lund Barons handle the water. We got her up to 55 mph without a bump. They really slice through the water. I picked up two Capt Pack big Jon riggers, two fishlander dual rod holders, two fishlander planer board vertical rod holders, lowarnce gps/sonar, depth raider, couple of otter boards, and a few other must haves. Clarke (or anyone) do you know how much line those big jon planer reels will hold? For walleye fishing in my neck of the woods we like to have the option to send out the boards 400' when there is no traffic. Ive always used in-line boards in the past. Any opinion on a dual mast vs single mast ? I caught the salmon bug big time out with Team Lucky Enuff and now Im in the poor house living off salmon filets Thanks for any help -
A couple of questions regarding Big Jon Planer Riggers. I am setting up my Lund Baron and would like to hear preferences on how to set up the planer riggers. Should I have two singles mounted on the sides above the windshield or a dual mast mounted in the middle of the bow? I read that the Big Jon Planer riggers come with 150ft of 135lb line. How much line will they actually hold though? Any help is much appreciated!

Some of my friends are doing really well off of Pigeon Island which is beyond the Charity shoals. Carelton Island has been hot as well. Dont ignore the underwater pts off of Tibbets Pt and Wolf Island either. I am in the process of setting up my new boat and will be able to contribute much more once she is in the water and running well.
