So this is what that writer is upset about. Looks to me like someone said: "We've heard enough opinions, it's past the deadline, so It's time to get down to business." If you look at the coastal areas, every state has been doing what they want, some absolutely nothing, some a tremendous amount. There are a lot of agencies involved all over the country - West coast, East coast, Gulf & Great Lakes. What he's doing is trying to set up a unified approach to all areas He may go after commercial fishing (which wiped out the Great lakes years ago) but he's not after the little guy's rights to go fishing. A&M – I hope you stuck around long to read some of the replies. I’m not sure what the US Zoning is going to do as they have not released any recomendations yet. I doubt very much though that they will affect us from a recreational or fishing standpoint. NY has many environmental conservation laws in effect and enforces them fairly well, unlike many other coastal states that basically do nothing. You probably know that I am staunchly against Windfarms in the Lake. I am an avid fisherman and an Engineer. As for my being an environmentalist let me just say that in 2008, I received awards from the Rochester Business Journal, and the Environmental Business Journal and in 2009, the MVP2 award from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable and was invited to Washington DC to receive an award from the USEPA for pollution elimination projects that I implemented at one of the historically biggest polluters in NYS & NJ. I currently oversee a recovery system that the NYSDEC refuses to establish limits on. (Thy're non-detectable & I’m up for their award, too) In the 90’s I received awards from Monroe County for other pollution elimination projects that I engineered & implemented. So I guess you could say I am somewhat of an environmentalist, however I am not a member of any of those organizations. I am staunchly against Windfarms in the Lake. There are no intentional scare tactics on my part, only some basic research, facts & links to just about everything I’ve said. NYPA & power companies are in a hurry and claim “green†only because they want the green money before the tax credits run out in 2013. Cost & money is their only driver. Kessel pulled out of the Long Island project because of cost. NYPA has ignored the water environment. Their feasibility studies advise “destroy what’s there then plant a few trees or set aside some land later.†They also ignore the policies of other gov’t agencies, commissions & international treaties & the Great Lakes Restoration initiative is not on their minds. They even ignore the recent Copehagen Convention that issued a statement that “the world’s freshwater supply is dwindling and must be protected.†I’m not against windpower in general, but windpower in the lake disturbs me greatly, especially utility scale farms. I’m also against utility scale nuclear, coal, gas, hydrogen, ethanol, methane, soy bean, solar, hydraulic and any other type of power plant in the lake. Please stick around, I think you and the majority of us have a lot more in common than you think. Tom B. (LongLine)

flys, flashers and leaders

Musky, One tower collapsed at Fenner this last November. The entire farm has been shut down since. NYPA said it fell for "no apparent reason." Another fell at Maple Ridge & the oil seeped into the ground water a couple years back. The NYSDEC investigated & ended up trucking in bottled water to a bunch of people. In those reference links I posted, they talk about wave heights similar to the baltic sea, but they don't take into account that Lake Ontario waves have much shorter periods that ocean waves. IE they're steeper & will pound the tower bases more frequently. That exclusion zone means we won't be allowed within the farm at all. Tom B. (LongLine)

Came across an interesting report – This is the recently released NYPA recommendation for turbines to windfarm developers as to site selection in Lake Ontario: http://www.nypa.gov/NYPAwindpower/GLOWs ... ection.htm Here are some interesting quotes & pix from it: This is their recomended configurations: It also states in the report that 345 sq miles will be taken up by turbines. Vestas ( a major international mfg of turbines) recommends exclusion zones of 1200 ft around each turbine. Doing the math, that’s 345+ sq miles of water under 100 ft deep that fishermen & boaters won’t be allowed in. (that's more than 5 x 60 miles) There is no reference or indication that they care about fishing, international treaties, Great Lakes restoration, or endangered marine life. Here’s another interesting quote on how NYPA telling developers they can beat current law: In order to beat the law, readers are referred to this link: http://www.awstruewind.com/files/NYSERD ... an2010.pdf which tells them that they can use US barges to haul blades & towers to the site then transfer them to a foreign ‘lift barge†for actual installation. There’s also a pretty good section describing the financial incentives, credits & subsidies they can get. From this last link, here’s a couple interesting items: The NYSERDA Lake Ontario site recommendations (I folded page – 1st part on Lake Erie, so 2 points can be made & only use 1 scan) IE 45m or less, will need transmission lines extending inland, most attractive is East End and recomended pilot project (Oswego & Orleans counties) 2ndly:they state that local stakeholders will definitely be affected and urge developers to get locals involved favorably. I urge anyone against these things to start & keep writing e mails to legislators. Tom B. (LongLine)

Springtime Browns?
LongLine replied to reelcranky's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
RC - Welcome to the board. Yes they definitely are caught along the shore. The only difference is that our fish are usually bigger. Tom B. (LongLine) -
The code for mine is LTR. It goes by weight & you should be able to look it up online. Mine is registered for 2000 Lbs. It should also be on the renewal form they sent you back in November. Tom B. (LongLine)

As we approach the season, don't forget your trailer registration. Can be done at your local DMV (and you county gets to keep a small portion of it) or do it online at: http://www.nysdmv.com. Tom B. (LongLine) PS yes in NYS, it's pro-rated

Rod holders off the side, off the corners, off the back, off the top - anyplace where you can comfortably get to them quickly, safely and without interfering with other gear. (and without dropping them overboard) Actually most planner board rod holder are the most forward located holders of all that are on the boat. Tom B. (LongLine)

Will NY Have To Shut Down The Erie Canal?
LongLine replied to tbulhead's topic in Open Lake Discussion
NY definitely needs to start thinking about a plan to keep them out of all our waters. DEC supplied the rotenone for the posioning of the sanitary canal & used it on that lake downstate that had snakeshead in it. As Tim suggested, the Welland and the Niagara would be good ambush areas. I use a hand crank LED flashlight called the "illuminator". It has a strong UV component. I find it best to charge up either the front or rear of the lure, rather than the whole thing. Tom B. (LongLine)
