When do you stop trolling for salmon/trouts?
LongLine replied to Pike Hunter's topic in Open Lake Discussion
How come I can select up to 4 options? (...ooops) Tom B. (LongLine) -
Temp not important for stagging kings. For the non-matures, hang around the thermocline. Water currents stir the water. It's not uncommon to find all kinds of "goofy" temps. This time of year, water near shore will all be one temp from top to bottom. As you go out, you'll generally find an area where they go completely "goofy", then as you go out more, it stabilizes. Bob - How true. Only problem is that the West side of the Genny is generally colder closer to shore than the East side. (currents) I think it'd be more helpful to get NOAA to move the E-W temp transect line much closer to the south shore rather than out in the middle of the lake. (It'd also be helpful if they calibrate the sensors cuz they say 52F is the coldest out there & we all know that's not true. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Really gets the heart throbbin out there solo & hitting them doesn't it. WTG Ted. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Disposal reg is 100 ft min of the shoreline for all fish. Fillet must have skin on it so proper ID can be made. The min length reg only applies to Black Bass, Brook Trout, Lake Trout & Atlantic Salmon. On these you must leave fish intact so that overall length of the fish can be determined. i.e can't cut head & tail off. (you can gut it or gill it but must leave intact) It was proposed at the last State of the Lake meeting by DEC that all carcass disposal be banned on the water. Didn't fly for this year but who knows about the next round. As for "it all goes back into the food chain"...don't get me started. Tom B. (LongLine)

Chris, It should have brought them in temporarily. It's a local upwelling that we normally get a little earlier in the month. Strong westerlies should take it right back up. I'd expect down currents to be really wicked as the west winds are picking up with small craft warnings up for tomorrow. Sleeping in sounds like the best choice. Tom B. (LongLine)

8-25 Genny (Tues)
LongLine replied to LongLine's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
This one only had twins. A 350 pulling it. Took up the center two ramps, so many officers/police supervising the launch, highly polished s/s props & not a scratch on it so I'm guessing it was brand new. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Blowback ? on cannon DOES THIS SEEM RIGHT?
LongLine replied to kdawg's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Twice the cable to get to 60 ft? No that doesn't seem right at all. What was your surface speed and what kind of angle did the cable make with the water? With 15 Lbs, something is out of whack. If a mechanical counter on rigger, was it at zero at the surface? Did you put it in neutral to confirm where the weight was on you FF? Were the readings the same in another direction? Tom B. (LongLine) -
Flasher mostly flat with either aft-side fins or a single large bend about 2 1/2" from rear. Designed to revolve in a large circle. Much more speed tolerant than dodgers out of the package. Dodgers tend to spin about there axis when trolled to fast unless as you say, are tuned. Spin Doctors (SDs), which as somewhat fish shaped, are very popular now days. TomB. (LongLine)

Congratulations. I can hear it now when he's 10 yrs old, as he hands a rod to you: "Here Dad, you take it, It's a little one." Tom B. (LongLine)

Welcome to the site. Thanx for the pattern. Similar theory to the MUP & should work. ie fish shys away from one then nails the other. Couple questions...Isn't 2.5 on a turn a little fast for a dodger? (2.5 surface or 2.5 down speed?) Did you match the dodger & J colors? Tom B. (LongLine)

LongLine Slept in this morning. Launched at 5:30. No one in lot. Beautiful morning. South wind, maybe a 1 ft chop with a few left over swells from the west. Clouds off on the North shore.Went out to 85, saw lots of activity on the bottom. Set up in 85 & headed towards Russell. Didn’t see another boat till about 7:30. Just past Russell, saw some N-S scum/seaweed lines so worked them N-S 90-140FOW. 54F down 65/70. Went 3 for 3. 2 small stlhds about 3 lbs that looked starved and finally a decent King. 21 Lbs and “medium†dark. All on the 65 rigger over 120FOW. All on my favorite DW SS Bloody Death. Off at 10:30. Maybe 6 trailers in lot. US customs/border patrol launching their boat. 30 ft center console, with twin 275 Mercs. Beautiful rig. 8 guys & 2 state police. Looked like it had never been in the water. (no room for a kicker though) Man, am I in the wrong occupation! Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)

8-24 Genny (Monday)
LongLine posted a topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
LongLine Launched at 5AM; shot the breeze with Bear (good to meet you Bear). Speaking of, wind was westerly. 1ft chop with an ocassional 2 ft'r & "rogue 3 tossed in. Good rainfall moving off towards the east. Tremendous amount of bait in 75-85 FOW. Awful warm in there though. Found 54F with 80 ft of cable out over 120FOW. Anyways 7 for 8. 5 Stlhd, 1 King, 1 Brown. Put them all together & it'd be one big fish. 8 Lb Stlhd largest. 19" King was clipped. Smallest Brown seen in a long time. Must have been all of 9" long. All caught at 65-75 over 130FOW. 5 on DW SS Bloody Death. 1 on NK Wonderbread, 1 on NK Purple spook. When the sun broke over the clouds, headed out. Saw a couple small bait clouds in 175FOW but nothing around them. Saw maybe 6 boats total. Off at 10:00 Sorry no pix, wife took my camera card & cable is shot for this one so can't download. 7 trailers at launch. Attendant may have gone back to school. Be careful in River - couple of big logs floating in there. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine) -
Flashers vs. Dodgers and Flies vs. Spoons
LongLine replied to Viking Ship's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
VS - Flashers more popular now days due to being more speed tolerant. Spoon length 2 to 4 times longer than fly length as fly has no action by itself and spoon does. Plugs even farther as they dampen the flasher. With color you have to experiment. White goes good with everything Tom B. (LongLine) -
WTG Mark. Grand Banks or North Shore? (how far out?) Tom B. (LongLine)

Was it the town cops, sheriff? Genny launch is $8. However if you get there, launch & park prior 6AM, attendant will give you a freebie. Tom B. (LongLine) ps I bought a season pass for $100. (good at Genny & I-Bay)

Chris - It's most accurate when the water hits the wheel straight on. Too much blowback will indeed cause unit to tilt & you'll lose accuracy. Make sure you haven't wrapped the the upper swivel so tight that the unit can't swivel vertically. Another thought (& I'm guessing) is that with the release between the ball & the probe, line may be pushing the rear of the probe sideways just a hair such that the nose partially shields the wheel.
