Fish Pesticide May Control Unwanted Round Goby
LongLine replied to SinDale's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Ray - Here's how the invassive food chain works. The creature on top eats/ate the creature below it. You can see what happens to the guy on top. Tom B. (LongLine) p.s wish more birds would eat gobies. -
big fish question
LongLine replied to wolfman's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
In reality a fish immediately gains weight in direct proportion to the time after it's initial contact with a fisherman. Something to do with adrenalin. For all you skeptics out there that don't believe it, 2 weeks ago I had a 19 Lb'r rip off 400 Yds of line & probably kept going all the way to Canada. Just wait till January when I tell you that it was a 30 Lb'r and Skeine'r caught it in November with my lure still in its jaw. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Not a bad weekend for a rookie
LongLine replied to TAGMAN's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Do not stop. Use the boats motion/path to help keep the line tight. On my ride, the cables & lines come in with any decent size fish. (Being primarily a soloist, it's easy cuz there's at most two.) Tom B. (LongLine) -

What is it? A tent? A covered lounge chair? A porta-potti? Tom B. (LongLine) -
Anyone with a Blue Finn Royale is alright in my book. Great ride. Welcome. Tom B. (LongLine)

Edd Thanx for taking the time to find that out. I've been wondering for a long time. I figured they did something like some flyguys do (wax) or something. Makes sense for trollers to have a small spool in the tacklebox rather than the bulk spools. My tackle box weighs 42 Lbs already  Tom B. (LongLine)

Only 30 yrs old? Those Rivieras have at least 5 more good years left in them. My engine probably won't support electrics so when I retired my Riverias, I went to cannon uni's. Make sure to get swivel bases. They save a lot of hassel with releases. Tom B. (LongLine)

Rick - Did you make it out? What's the verdict? Tom B. (LongLine) -
IMO, no doubt the cleaner water due to the mussels has contributed to this. The lake is fairly shallow out quite a ways on the S. shore. Direct sunlight can penetrate the water and warm the darker bottom further out than ever before. (at least in our lifetimes) If you look at the NOAA lake transects, you'll see there is very little under 40F water in Big-O right now. Tom B. (LongLine)

Random thoughts - If they're talking quality refering to fewer fish but greater size then that's possible. However if they talking quality means catching fish everytime you go fishing, they're full of it. Maybe they haven't heard that theory about overfishing. Or perhaps they know more about big water, open water trolling & the current fish population in Big-O than I give them credit for. They could be correct for certain medium size Bass lakes. Tom B. (LongLine) Catch & "grease"?

Don't have the foggiest notion, but am willing to bet that there is a little electronic plug-in gizmo/module (we used to call them relays) that is blown. Try asking on www.thehulltruth.com site, if no one can figure it out here. Tom B. (LongLine)

I think it was Reeljerks that posted this site a while back. (if not sorry to whoever did). Pretty good site. Click on the word "more" to get wind direction, gusts etc. http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/wfo/se ... neWeek.php Tom B. (LongLine)

Exactly what my probe looks like. Sometimes in & sometimes out of the transducer cone. Bring your rigger up (or down) while watching the screen to confirm. Tom B. (LOngLine) -
Launched at the Genny under a starlit sky. Headed W & set up in front of the ponds in 25 FOW. Very slight South wind. Cold water had moved out so headed out. On the way out ran into this chubby guy on the bottom in 60 FOW w/ a Wonderbr’d NK 28. Lot of bait from 50-70 then again 120-140 FOW but mostly on the bottom. (really curious if they’re gobies) Ran into these two little guys around 200FOW on silvr Mags w/yellow Ladr’s, 50 Ft down. Bow (RHS) had 3 lamprey scars on it. Lots of fleas from 60 to bottom at 180FOW & out. Beautiful day on the water. 1st day I didn’t attract ragboats. Off at 11:30. Tom B. (LongLine)

Friends don't let friends...fish Lake Ontario
LongLine replied to Gator's topic in Open Lake Discussion
The King stocking program was hit big time last year. There weren't enough eggs harvested and then the eye-up problem hit. DEC has already said it's cutting the salmon stocking quotas for just about everywhere except the S.R. in hopes of protecting the "brood stock." [state of the Lake meetings - Mar '08] We've had a fairly wet year, however the lake is still pretty high. Let's hope a tropical storm (not like Agnes though) makes it up here & gives us some decent rain & high outflow towards the begining of Oct so the spawning run (stocked & nat repo) is more sucessful than last year. Launched before dawn at the Genny. Fog along shore early but burned off around 9:30. Initially worked 40-70FOW out front. Bait was there. Temp definitely warmer as you went out. Very cold shallow. Wondering if these things are blankets of goby’s??? Only saw a few pods up in the water column. Quite a few boats around the mouth early, then they went out. Moved down to Russell in 70 FOW then worked towards shore. Birds in 35 FOW again. (Divers & gulls) I buzzed them for a better shot cuz they obviously didn’t know where the fish were either. Did manage a tiny rainbow in 30 FOW, 10 down, NK clean frog. (Looked like somebody had snagged him) Worked back to River, zig-zagging 30-55FOW, then pulled out around 11:00. Apparently they teach this in sailing school. This guy must’a got an “Aâ€

I second "keep it simple". I'd like to see it attract the little guy. (like me) I don't know how it fits into anyone's schedule but I'd like to see it before Memorial Day when the ragboats & others start hitting the river or the Genny launch. I'd suggest something like this: Rules of the "Pen-Genny" NYS license, laws Location: Big-O waters off the Genny, I-Bay, Braddocks Where to register: ???? (mail???) Date: Some Saturday Early-Mid May, Weather date, following Saturday Honor System, legally caught whole fish Soloists allowed Open communications Fishing Time: 6AM-2PM Fee: $25 donation to Genny pen project per person (not per boat) Targets: Atlantic, Brown, Chinook, Coho, Laker, Rainbow/Steelhead Min weights: Trout & Coho – 6 Lbs; Chinook – 12 Lbs Prizes: Heaviest fish entered – Trophy + 15% of gate + picture of winner getting a smootch from YT’s brother’s girlfriend on the left hand side of this site. (or YT if winner is female, provided he's had his rabies shot) 2nd place – plaque + 5% of gate Highest total weight of one man’s limit – Trophy + 15% of gate 2nd place – plaque + 5% of gate Ties decided by coin toss by weigh-master 10% of gate for awards, blind draw prizes & weigh-master (unless donated, then add 5% to the 1st places); 50% for Pen project Weigh in station – Parking Lot at Genny launch Weigh in hours: 1:00-3:00PM Legal disclaimer??? Ray - shhh..don't give them any ideas. They just blew their savings on a study for the Renassance Square ($20 mil). In case you didn't know, that is a restoration project downtown that includes a fancy bus station. (again, for people to leave the city) Glad we don't have to pay other cities to provide "docking" for our busses. Tom B. (LongLine)
