  1. Joe, This is my 3rd yr with it. I had to replace a CRT & had doubts at first. No doubt now, I like it. I just wish it would call the bigger fish in closer. Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. Launched at Genny early, headed towards Russell. Thick clouds, hazy, muggy, trying to rain. Very slight SSW wind. Actually should have been perfect for fishing. Only a couple other boats out there. Only managed "one half" of a king shaker at 52 over 100 FOW. i.e. if he was twice that size, he'd have been a real shaker. (Grn Thunder) Very thin thermocline, I’d guess maybe 3 ft thick. At 2 ¼ mph w/ 75 ft of cable out, temp was mid 40’s. Same at 2 ½ mph was high 50’s & occasional 60 F. 74F on surface. Ankle biters came out around 10:00AM. Lot of fleas, but manageable. Lots of bait: Although no marks around the bait. Quite a few swirls on the surface. Worked out to 200 FOW, saw nothing but fleas, so came back in. Off around noon. Hey Reeljerks – This you? Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Billy V - I can undestand your point. I won't deal with a merchant like that. I've ordered moor antennas from www.esgdirect.com on sunday & had delivery on Tuesday with no special charges. Also I like Jannsnetcraft for any lure building I do. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. PU - Nice fish. A solo-double is a real rush. On a side note, flying solo makes you get organized real quick doesn't it. Fishinman - I agree that something must be wrong with guys who target the greasers, however if either of us ever catches a 25+ Lb greaser, we won't be able to post it on this board. They'd never let us live it down Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Sponge - I've got a new rectifier diode, new stator, new battery cables and have gone back to a marine starting battery (also brand new) rather than the dual purpose marine battery. Also, cleaned and/or replaced a bunch of connections. Only thing left that I can figure is the flywheel. (which will be darn near impossible to replace) Will try again this weekend & see what happens. Wish me luck. Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. GB - I don't know what a roemer will do. I suspect if it digs into the coating it'll hurt. I do know that a bare Black's release on coated cable will chew the coating right off if it rotates. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Charging again.... Anybody know what the ohm reading should be on a 75 hp evinrude (1984) between the diode/rectifier red and yellow leads? How about the red to yellow/gray??? Manual says yellow to engine ground should be infinite one way and have resistance the other. Same with yellow/gray to engine ground. It then says check yellow to red and yellow/gray to red but doesn't hint what the reading should be. Is it the same, or should they both be infinite, both ways??? (now I'm undercharging.) Tom B. 8. I hit 4 weather sites before heading out. 3 of the 4 said storms this afternoon. 4th said storms to our north. I kept an eye on the sky as I was launching & going out. Thought I had a couple hour window. Kind of funny that the lightning was ahead of the rain. Oh well, at least the boat is all gassed up for next weekend. Tom B. (LongLine) Wish we all had the job security those guys & their staffs have. p.s. can't complain about the fishing today so might as well complain about the weather
  9. I monitor flammable solvent tank levels at work and can tell you that yes all flammable liquids expand/contract quite a bit with temperature. However roadside gas stations have their tanks wel below ground level and the temperature doesn't fluctuate wrt air temperature down there. Not nearly as much as it does with above ground tanks. You've probably see expansion effects if you have a mercury outboard with a vented tank and fill it too full. On a hot day when you open the vent, gas will squirt out the vent. Moral: leave a little air space in your tank so only vapor escapes on those hot days. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Beautiful day at the Genny. All 8 freeking minutes of it. Cleared the pierheads, got it planned then saw the first bolt of lightning just past Russell. Coast guard didn't seem to mind me flying up the river. oh, well, at least it doesn't count as a skunk if I don't get a lure in the water. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. iceman - Sure sounds like you're not firing on both cylinders. If you're throttle advances then the cable is not stuck. These are what plug wires look like on my Envinrude. (I have three plugs) Take your cowling/cover off. (there should be a lever) & look for the same things on your engine. They have a heavy boot on each end. Make sure the wires are securely attached on both ends. i.e. push on them. If your wires are attached okay then you're going to have to take it in to a mechanic as it could be the wire itself, the plug, points or the "power gizmo" that feeds the plug if you have one. A mechanic such as RAS could tell you in a couple minutes what's going on. If you don't want to go all the way to Spencerport then try Pugsley's on 104. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. If you're only running on all cylinders it won't matter what you do to the cable, how much you advance the spark nor how much gas you put into the engine, it'll only go so fast. On my shakedown cruise a couple years back, I had just replaced plugs on my 3 cylinder envinrude & didn't have one wire on securely. Engine idled out the pierheads great & then didn't go anywhere when I gave it the gas. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. SB - What doesn't seem right to Ray is that the forms are available 5 days after the event :?: :?: Have a cup of coffee, take a deep breath...try again. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. Anyone know where I can get a 12 Lb lead Fish mold? (I.E. a "heavy Herbie") Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. For anyone needing pix. This is the best site I've come across. Just chose the specie on the right hand side & a page with a whole bunch of good photos from every possible angle will come up. Adult, YOY, mouth, fins, details etc. http://www.wiscfish.org/fishid/frames.aspx (I'm actually glad DEC & ESF are taking an interest) Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Launched at 5:30 Headed west . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . & didn't catch an "F in thing." Oh, well...next weekend is coming. Thermocline just starting to form. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. There are quite a few gobies. Population in Big-O really went up this last year. Bugs are being reported at just about all the ports. Don't know what mother-nature is doing there. Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. Hope he has a full recovery Ray. Musky - You mean like he writes? :?: I know he used a period followed by a capital letter somewhere in those 1000+ posts. Law of averages...dumb-luck...he had to...didn't he...someplace... Tom B. (LongLine) Just playing Ray. Hope you all get a good nights sleep. It's a very stressfull event.
  19. Stainless steel. Low Speed-High feed. Small drill then a larger one. Oil is a must. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. F77 - What you're looking for is a prop with a LITTLE less pitch. Your prop should be stamped with a number. I.E. 17, 18, 19, 20 or something like that. Getting a LITTLE less pitch means your boat will not go as far with every revolution of the prop. However you will also lose high end speed. Note that I said a LITTLE. (cap letters) Less pitch also means you will probably gain RPM on the high end which, if you go to far, can be very detrimental to engines. I'd definitely check with the dealer & explain what you want to do before going out & buying a different pitch prop. Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. 1st mate finally caught a fish. Glad that jinx is busted. Anyways, launched at the Genny & headed to the sand bars off to the west. Heavy clouds moved off to the east with a brisk SW wind. Bright & sunny. Marked a lot of something in 60-65FOW. (Possibly alewife spawning?) Couldn’t get anything to move. Surface temp seemed to get couple degrees warmer going out to 200 FOW. My guess is that there is an awful interesting water circulation pattern going on right now. Circled back in off the river & we ran into the one above on MUP’d Blk/Slvr w/glo at 40 down over 100FOW. Off at 11:00, both of us par-boiled. Great day to be on the water. Tom B. (LongLine) p.s. How do flies & bees get out to 200 fOW?
  22. IAb - I have manual cannons. They're have swivel bases and are mounted to a removable board I invented many yrs ago. The last 15" hinges up to get the riggers off the side off the boat for fishing and then up out of the way at the launch. Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. SD - I hope you didn't buy a boat from him. Did he sell bridges in his spare time? If his theory was correct every racing boat would sandblast their hulls. Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. b - with enough time & effort almost anything is possible . All lines, wire, mono, rope, cable, etc should be spooled like this: If you only have 12,000 foot or less of it on there, let it out behind you on the boat then hire a youngster, that wants a work out, to reel it back it on :?: Tom B. (LongLine) ps. playing with that last statement. Maybe someone out there has a real idea.
  25. JH - FWIW, The DEC did a special study on Smmouths in that area last year. They found numbers were up. Not like they were 20 yrs ago but definitely up. (Think I wrote some notes on it in the State of the Lake article in the Article section) Tom B. (LongLine)
