New to the site salmon river
LongLine replied to cuttermag1's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Welcome to the site. Check out the reports section...lot of lakers being caught - and some are slobs. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Welcome to site. For a 1st tim'r, you have to learn to experiment. Play with speed, play with depth of lures, play with speed, play with lures, play with speed, play with leads, play with speed, play with direction, play with speed. Let's see did I say play with speed? Many guys will put a lure out & troll at the speed they see fit. It may not be what the fish want. Many fish will come out of their comfort zone to hit a lure if it looks enticing. Tom B. (LongLine) BTW - Play with speed. Easiest way is to troll in a zig-zag pattern.

Check out this site – click the “more†& move your mouse through the hours. http://graphical.weather.gov/sectors/bufMarineWeek.php Also check this site. (don’t forget to scroll down. Click on Forecast & Nowcast pull downs. Find Lake Ontario. Scroll through the time scales. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?lake=o&ext=swt&type=N&hr=00 Put them both together & you should be able to get a good idea of what’s going on out there. Look at normal map of Lake O. The direction where the wind travels the least over the water will give you the calmest water. i.e. South wind & you can be out there all day with no chop worries. Typically during the summer, (and right now) early morning is calmest. Winds start to pick up a little around 9-9:30. Tom B. (LongLine)

When I'm not running a board, I always stack on the non-probe rigg'r. I'm different that Vogel though. My F/F is on top about 15-20 ft back and usually 12-15 ft up. Clean spoon on the bottom 10-25 ft behind the stacker. Never had a problem (& I'm one of the "ol guys.") Experience will tell you what you can do & how to handle it. You have to be careful when you lower the ball with the F/F on the bottom. It will not go down as fast as the as the upper spoon. Tom B. (LongLine)

No, we said we wanted to third rod to help locate the active fish. BTW - No soloist fishing only 3 rods has reported a triple...yet. (I've had two doubles but no triples...yet) LyteLine - Tom B. (LongLine)

Definitely look for sites that give you multiple times. i.e. past and/or predicted future...look for patterns. If it's been calm for a few days, you can expect a change. Same for winds - "blows" from the west generally last 3 days. At Fair Haven, at least you have a pretty bay to fish in case of a blow-off. Tom B. (LongLine)

Watch out for some big logs out there: http://online.wsj.com/article/AP5da1dd7c34524441a9afff8bf94ce2e9.html (CG issues warnings due to high quantity of rain lately - especially at Niagara & Genny) Tom B. (LongLine)

Running Flasher/fly and Spoons
LongLine replied to steal's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I agree with DJ's theory. They say only one out of ten fish that goes after your lure will actually take it. Search for "underwater salmon strikes". Watch videos and you'll always see a fish that misses a lure either swims to the side or down, very rarely upward. If you have F/F & spoon on one rigg'r, a major factor to think about is how fast you lower them. F/F will not go down as fast as the spoon & if you go too fast you will get tangled if the F/F is on bottom. (assuming your stacking and not sliding) Fishing solo and with two riggers, my high rigger has the F/F while lower has the spoon. Kind of mimics the MUP rig where the magnum spoon (bigger) is on top. Tom B. (LongLine) Good luck to anyone that puts F/F on a slider - always a big mess for me. -
WTG Double J & HnU . Hope your hand heals quickly. Tom B. (LongLine)

This is sometimes true, sometimes false on Big-O. I've experienced moving two miles west and finding 8 F difference. Tom B. (LongLine)

Jim B - Nice fish. Cover as much of the water colum as you can this time of year (Try one lure up in the 12-20 ft range.) Tom B. (LongLine) -
A guy & 2 gals launch a jet ski at the river. 2 gals on board, guy jumps on from dock & flips it over. All 3 in the brink. Almost thought you were going to say: "pulled his front bummper right off." pap - Ouch... Tom B. (LongLine)
