WTG. Glad you figured it out. It's awful easy to troll under the fish on Lake Ontario. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Thanx guys. Tim - I've caught beat-up rainbows before but they were all a bit darker. This guy turned his lake colors and had pinkish "skin" rips, gut, side & back. I was wondering if he near killed himself trying to shake the lampry which had him about an inch in front of his tail (on the other side) Jeff - Launching solo at the River is not hard. My auto pilot was made by an Italian company called "Bungie". Tom B. (LongLine) -

Ouch...sorry to hear about the engine problems. Hope you can get them fixed. (When going fast, get the big sticks out there but make sure they're tuned properly - many trolled at 2 will roll & go belly-up at 3.3) Good luck with the engines. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Well, weekend was a little too windy and cold for me, & the festival was a madhouse, so took today off & went fishing. Launched solo at the river around 5:15. River temp was 64F and passed this guy on the way out. (Lake Guardian is in town) Didn’t see any local reports early when I got up this morning so headed out to the old stomping grounds & put in around 90 Ft. Surface temp 52.5F. Easterly wind, maybe 1 ft waves. Cloud cover building. Thought I saw a near full moon on the way out but it disappeared quickly. Temp down 50 was 48F but somewhat inconsistent. Anyways, worked from 95 to 145 a few times. Littlwe too choppy to keep a board out there by myself so stacked on the 2nd rigg'r. Went 6 for 6. 3 small Kings (2 were tiny); 1 Laker & 2 Rainbow. Kings hit NK Wonderbread down 55. Laker & Rainbow were a double – and another Cluster Humper. Laker down 75, same lure, Rainbow hit a pink Bomber stacked only 12 ft down. What’s with the Rainbow this year? Another one that looked like it barely survived a major car crash: It also had a fresh lamprey mark on its other side, but back by tail. Look at it’s tail & lower Jaw….Hmm… Finally, here’s what a Lake Ontario Rainbow is supposed to look like! Also on the pink stick, stacked 12 ft down. All fish taken in the 110-120 FOW range. All caught running faster than normal - 2.7 down speed. Two other boats out there. 8 o’clock & it looked gloomy over the city, 9 o’clock started sprinkling out there and Saturday is only 4 days away, so pulled them up. Headed in & got soaked on the way. Who was it that said you get less wet if you go fast during the rain????? Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)

Years ago I had my boat at Port Bay at my parents place. It was a 21 ft PennYan. I was going to go up to the Seaway. Stopped & cruised around Fairhaven then proceeded to Oswego. Took a few hours & went up a couple of the locks. It was great seeing my tax dollars at work. Being the only boat, and a small one at that, in a lock was a thrill. Back then you only had to approach the lock, blow your horn & they'd let you in. (Gave the lock-keeper something to do) Proceeded to South Sandy and got hit with a big blow out of the North west. Stuck for 2 1/2 days. Waves finally calmed to 5 ft'rs so decided to chance it & head back. Bounced the keel off the sand bar that quickly formed at the mouth, twice. Made it back to Port Bay, worried all the way. Put it on the trailer & checked it over. Lucky I didn't crack the hull or lose the outdrive. For anyone planning a trip, make sure you have the long range forecast, study the Nav charts before you go & let someone know where you're going & when you'll be back. Stay safe. Tom B. (LongLine)

Yes, The bill seeks to eliminate the date & make it permnent. The 3/31/13 is probably when the bill went to the typist. Tom B. (LongLine)

Vince, I'm thinking they made a good decision as it gives the alewives a chance to bounce back and their salmon will be on the upswing. Tom B. (LongLine)

Exactly! Play the loop feature. Put the surface, the transects & the surface currents together in your mind to get a decent picture of what's going on out there. Tom b. (LongLine)

Cluster slider puts it mildly. Look at the orientation of Lake Ontario on the maps w.r.t. the prevailing winds. See the genny in the "cove?" Now figure in the outflow from Long pond, Round/Buck pond, Braddocks and even the River & I-Bay. Really gets interesting and becomes quite the challenge. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Fish - For a family day trip out of Rochester, I would definitely recomend heading west. The trip to Sodus is really nice but always think of the weather. My reasoning is this: Assuming you'd be starting your trip in the morning - The prevailing winds are out of the west. They will be strongest in the mid/late afternoon. The trip home will be with the waves which is always a smoother ride. Family, especially the young ones may not enjoy a rough ride especially if they're tired. On the other hand if you were to drive to Sodus & launch, then by all means head toward Rochester. You might want to scout out some maps & find a nice beach on you trip. Kids always like pulling in and going for a swim. Tom B. (LongLine)

FT has some good advice. What I'd add is to remember what the conditions were and how you were fishing when you did catch something. Realize conditions are different so you need a new plan of attack. Sometimes speed, sometimes direction, sometimes depth in column, sometimes longer leads. Seems to me it's very easy to fish under the fish & that is frustrating! Tom B. (LongLine)

We all wish it were that simple. But that is a good start. You also have to remember that those temp maps are at least a few hours old. Look at the sites that give a history for the last 2 days or so and try to visualize the pattern of how the water is moving. It can change drastically in a hours time. Tom B. (LongLine)

Water is clear except themal patches have some color. Couldn't see anyone hugging the shore...actually where I was, I could just see the shore. Tom B. (LongLine) -
Well, launched solo at the river: Cleared the Pierheads at exactly 5 am & headed west. River temp 60.5F but went down fairly quickly. All kinds of small things swirling on the surface as I took off. (I’ve never seen so much activity) Put in at 85 off Russell & headed out. Real calm out there today. Weatherman said a SE wind but I didn’t see it. Now here’s a sunrise! Clean screen for most of the trip. A few jumping here & there. Crossed a couple thermal patches where temp dropped ½ degree. Surface generally ranged 49.5 to 48.2F. Temp down 50 was 45. This guy hit a NK Wonderbread down 55 at about 130FOW: I’m guessing in the 10 Lb range. (30â€) Basically worked out to 200 & back in a couple times. On one of the shore-ward legs spotted this. All my years on the lake & I’ve never seen that: It’s a rainbow off a front, but wasn’t raining. (Just crossed a thermal patch) Picked up 2 more kings but smaller. Same lure down 55 for all. Funny, deeper I went, smaller they got. Had one hook up on the planner board. Goofy-est looking Stlhd I’ve ever seen: Looked like he bashed his head on someone’s prop. All fish were caught 130-150FOW, going a little faster than usual. Generally 2 ¾ downspeed. Wind came up around 9:30 out of the NE so pulled them in shortly after & headed in. 4 out of 4, flying solo – Not bad in my book. Out by 11:30. Private dredge digging out some of the river in front of CG station. Sure seems strange with the turnbridge out of there. 8 trailers in the lot. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
