  1. .01??? wow. Is this olympic swiming or fishing? WTG Jerry. Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. LFF - That's the little fin above the tail. Only Salmoniods have them. For the Last couple yrs or so the NYSDEC has been clipping them off of all stocked fish for their study of stocked vs naturally reproduced fish in the Lake. (Some debate how successful they are) Unfortunately this yrs crop of stocking was not clipped - but that's another issue. There's a very high probablity that these were all natural fish. i.e. result of natural spawning in out tribs. Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. 5 profanities: 1 for the USF&WS for allowing those redneck in Arkansas to have them in their ponds years ago & not considering that the Miss River floods every few years. 1 for the USACofE for taking so long in studying the issue. 1 for the US Supreme court in favoring one state over 7 others 2 for the Obama administration for ingoring International Treaty and placing a higher value on cheap sewage disposal for his hometown than the health of the Great lakes. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. Take a small amount of WD-40 & spray onto a soft paper towel. Works wonders on restoring spoon paint jobs & cleaning silver. If you're going to put tape on the spoon, you have to get all the WD-40 off. Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Congrats on the King. It's a rush to get them when flying solo. Please watch out with the Rainbows. Length limit on Big-O is 21". It's 15 on the Fingers but 21 out on the big water. Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. I'm talking mainline. Some may say that going that heavy doesn't require retie. I advise retie after every fish: 1. The first 12 inches of mono stretches the most, especially on a vicious hit. 2. Salmon have teeth. This morning they were really smaking the lures. One good head shake or reverse in direction with a deep hook set & you have a nick in the line. You hear about bite-offs a lot. 3. Knots in mono cut into themselves when stressed. 4. The more knots you tie, the better you get at it. I'd advise you feel that last ft or so of line between you thumb & forefinger. Any roughness, visual "pig-tails" or if it doesn't feel like it just came off the spool - retie it. I normally cut about 3-4 ft off & throw it in my engine well. (Please don't throw it in the water.) 7. Make sure that seat cushion style has the proper tag on it and hasn't been sat on. CG often looks at whether the "stuffing's been squished." Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. Go to this site. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glc ... pe=N&hr=00 click on "nowcast" click on Lake Ontario, surface transects. You'll at least get an idea of what's going on out there. Tom B. (LongLine)
  9. If you want to be foolish then go ahead...but don't expect my tax dollars to pay for the ambulance/resusitation costs for partygoers. Enough of my opinion..here's some print right from the Coast Guard: http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/life_ ... acket.aspx Note it says "each person aboard". If it was strickly for boats under power, then ragboats, canoes, kayaks, rowboats etc would be exempted...which they are not. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Generally 650 feet is fine. Every fish is a little different. You may however run into that "special" one once or twice a year that takes every inch of that and wants more. Tom B. (LongLine) ps - remember to cut some off & retie after each fish.
  11. Fishing Report LongLine Up at 3:30, gear’d up the boat, stopped for gas then launched at the river. Very peaceful in the morning. Had a visitor in the harbor tied up on the West side: Pretty good overcast that cleared up around 8:30. River surface 79F. Slight SW wind. Headed out and off to the left again, flying solo. Didn’t stop till I hit 100FOW & 74F on surface. Saw a couple bait pods at 105 FOW so worked basically 95-120FOW off the plant. Kind of interesting temps. One minute it was 42F down 50 then 10 minutes later it was 54F. Must have been an upwelling this last week? Anyways rigg’rs set between 30 & 40 back. One set at 70, other at 50 with a stacker 12 ft up. Tried out some clean spoons with home-tape jobs. Prpl Ld’r on a Mongoose & Prpl/grn on Blk and had no reason to change them out. Went 7 out of 9 between 6:00 and 9:00. 6 Kings & 1 Stlhd. Everything worked. Nothing huge but nice fish. All Kings had adipose fins. Quite a few boats out. Maybe saw 10 out there. Some further east. Didn’t see any fleas on my 12Lb. Off at 10:30 as it was getting quite warm out there. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. Welcome to site. Braid is a flea magnet. Heavy mono and wires do a much better job. To remove them once on you line, reel the line until the wad of fleas is about 10 from your rod tip. Dip the tip in the water and then snap it upward as fast as you can. water will cut it right off. Some guys pound the rod tips into the water but I think that's a good way to break your rod. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. If in the boat then yes. If on the dock then no. Please don't overload your boat, even at the dock. Boats can capsize even at the dock. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. They'll definitely be sniffing around, looking at their spawning sites. Heavy rains & dark days will trigger the false runs. Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. rolmops - What'd you decide on? Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Don'r know about the raider but my Sub-T manual & everything I've read says all probes should go direct to the battery. That's one reason they give you an in-line fuse. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. The genny is probably the calmest place on the lake during a west wind as it's basically in a protected cove, however very flat so you have to go out about 4 miles right now. (where it's not quite so protected.) With a small boat, it's best to get out real early. i.e launch 5 am latest. That's when the lake is calmest. Winds generally pick up a little around 9-9:30. Generally, I'd forget that afternoon fishing out that far in a open boat. Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. Slow & easy... Dock on the left, wind from the right...Pull in parrallel to the dock but about 3 ft off of it & let the wind carry you to the left. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. Welcome to the site. Get that boat in the water & learn how to handle it well first, then put the dipseys in & have a ball. There's a lot of info on Dipseys in here. Also check out the report sections to see how guys have successfuly run the dipseys. Tom B. (LongLine) ps save up for a rigg'r, they'll be going on sale in another month or so.
  20. Definitely a class act. WTG John. There's definitely a couple big ones out there waiting for you. Tom B. (LongLine)

  22. Fishing Report LongLine Weatherman said T-storms around noon, but his predictions are generally a couple hours earlier than the event so launched before dawn, just in case, this morning. Motor fired right up (YAY!) but had the kicker ready to go for a little insurance. 78F river surface. Heavy overcast. Ran around the piers for a bit to make sure everything was ok with the motor then headed out off Russell. (It’s been a rough but comic couple of weeks) Looked like the Seneca out doing some trawling. Big buoy out there so stayed away from it. Put the rigg’rs in at 100FOW. All short leads - 40 ft max. 74F on surface, 54F down 65-70 ft. Not much on the screen till 140FOW. Worked out to 160 FOW Then back to 140, with probe pulling a DW Dolphin down 85; 2nd rigg’r stacked with a Grn/prpl NK spook at 70 ft and a DW Prpl clown high. Lost a nice Laker as he decided to hit both lures on the stacked rigg’r & made a real mess at the back of the boat. Guessing about 7-8 Lbs. This guy hit the probe line & brought in a passenger. Not awful big but OMG look at the size of that freaking Lamprey! 1 King and 3 lampreys released. (3 equal 9†pieces) Kind of early to see those big lampreys. Had two more hits but didn’t see them as they were on & off. Had a nice steelhead on the Clown do his acrobatic thing but then he decided he’d get away but cutting the line on the rigg’r cable. Also brought in a little Stlhd about 4 Lbs. 8:00, Heard Prescott radio say storm on the North shore, so got a little leery being out so far. Then CG came on with a warning for western Big-O. Oops – time to get out of here. Gear up & full speed for port. Dumb sailboats just going out with the sky getting black. Looked like a mid-west storm sky. Got the boat on the trailer and just as I was tying her down, the sky opened up. Quick downpour soaked everything. Talked to a group just sitting at the ramp. They’d forgotten their plug & 1 of the group had gone back home for it. Guess that’s the first time I ever heard of a “stupid human trick†ever saving anyone issues. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. Welcome to the site. Not necessary to run full spools of fluro. That's expensive. Tie on a leader. Most guys use wire on the dipseys. Hard to beat green spoons unless i'st with purple on those dark days. Spin doc's probably one of the best investments in tackle. Don't know ehere you intend to go but a good general pattern right now is to start at 90FOW - troll out to 140, back into 115, out to 170 - see the pattern. Good luck. Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. Welcome to the site. Lot of guys using 30Lb & up due to the fleas. Fluro quite expensive & not necessary to spool up completely with it. Just tie on about a 20-30 ft leader. Spool will last a lot longer Reels more importantt than rods. 320's great reels. They're all I use, great drag. Tom B. (LongLine)
  25. Short answer - yes Tom B. (LongLine) "MUP" = Magnum up
