  1. Depends on how you release them. Release them into your cooler and no they won't survive. If not "gut" hooked and not horsed around in the boat then great majority do survive. The Lake Ontario Annual report said that close to 45% of the fish caught were released, yet I have never seen more than a couple dead salmon per year floating out there (spring & summer) Tom B. 2. NEARSHORE MARINE FORECAST NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BUFFALO NY 950 AM EDT SUN APR 22 2012 FOR WATERS WITHIN FIVE NAUTICAL MILES OF SHORE LOZ043-044-222015- HAMLIN BEACH TO MEXICO BAY ALONG LAKE ONTARIO INCLUDING IRONDEQUOIT BAY- 950 AM EDT SUN APR 22 2012 GALE WARNING IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON TONIGHT NORTHEAST WINDS 10 TO 20 KNOTS INCREASING TO GALES TO 35 KNOTS OVERNIGHT. Glad I trailer and don't park on the Genny. Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Silicone in the lines??????? Do you mean that sludgey stuff like your gas line has been eaten up with eth-eth-eth-ethanol? If so take a look at your fuel pump. Start the engine and see if it'll run if you continuous pump the bulb? Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. Get yourself a good nautical chart...watch out for thet 5 ft stuff. Good way to lose a prop. South wind pushes the warm surface water offshore and brings in the cold stuff from out deep. North wind does the opposite. "General" lake current on the south shore comes from the west and goes to the east, however it hits many "snags" along the way. Run heavy spoons like NK on the fast side, Stingers can go slow or fast. Start out slow & work the old Zig-zag. Be observant as to which side gets the hit then adjust speed accordingly. Good luck. 5. Kind of obvious which marinas/harbors want the powerboats/fishermen and which ones don't, isn't it? Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. There's definitely a plus side to aluminum boats. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Permanent with a long antennea. Hand helds are too easy to drop, especially overboard and don't have the range of the permament ones. Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. Welcome to the board JB. Those salt outfits are more than enough for anything in freshwater. You might want to lighten up on the gear a little. Something with a little more give, especially in the rods. Your liable to straighten out a few hooks. Most of the guys use 7-10 ft medium action rods. I personally use 8'6" heartland rods with penn 320 GT2's. July August is Flea season. The 30 Lb is often used by some to keep the fleas off, not really necessary for catching the fish. As long as you reel as a smooth enough drag to let the fish peel off 100-150 yds on his first run, you'll be fine. Tom B. (LongLine)
  9. I suggest camera for 2 reasons: 1. Post a pic with his name visible... and 2. I had a boat comming at my port side while trolling in 200 FOW with not another boat in sight. I took many pictures in sucession and the driver caught the flash out of the corner of his eye & swerved. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Yikes! Good luck with it. I'm sure it'll be a lot better when your done with it. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. The Genny, I-Bay & Sandy are between Fair haven & Olcott. All have great ramps. Clean spoons off shallow rigg'rs & sticks way back on the boards. Fish under 25 FOW. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. Great day on the water. The smiles on 3 generations tell it all. Glad to see those naturals are growing. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. Shawn - I also started way back when. Back then I had a Marine MKII crt b/w unit, which I think was the best unit ever made. When it died, I went color. I like color better because the various shades of grey were sometimes deceiving. Blue dots in the water are definitely just noise. Speed & temp on the fish finder are deceiving also. Paddlewheel speed due to drag of the boat and temp due to prop wash & the suns reflection. If you can spring i,t look for a rigg'r probe so you can get downspeed & temp. Good luck out there. Tom B. 14. Fishing Report LongLine Well it’s been a long wait but well worth it especially after hearing how well everyone’s been doing. Actually I was happy that the boat didn’t sink and the engine started when I launched at the Genny for the 1st time this year. Guess I was in about 6:00am. Only one other guy launching in the dark. Lots of driftwood in launch spot #2. No parking machine yet. Slight wind out of the south & overcast then cleared up. Surprisingly it wasn’t that cold. River temp 51F. Here’s the first LongLine shot of the new season: Reports showed everyone headed East past I-Bay so of course, I headed west towards Russell. Cleared the jetty & goosed it to make sure I was banging on all cylinders. Surface dropped to 47F. Fishfinder died so I’m guessing I slowed down & set up in the 20-25 FOW range. Anyways dropped the first rigg’r to 12 ft with a DW Dolphin back about 50 ft & this guy hits it as I’m setting up the second: Good shoulders. – 9 Lb Brown. Not sure what the circle on him was. He had a lamprey mark on his other side but more forward. Got another small Brown as I worked west, then I was pleasantly surprised by this guy. (Actually he made my knees wobbly) – 1st King of the year. 8 ft down back about 40 Ft on a Wonderbread: (18 Lbs, 35 1/2â€) Turned around at the ponds, and had two more small Browns on the way back to the Genny. One on a Cindy Long-A off the planner board and the other off the Dolphin. 3 of the 4 Browns had lamprey marks. Salmon was clean. One of them didn’t have a right pec fin. The King did have an adipose fin. Maybe 6-8 boats fishing the mouth. Pulled the lines at 10:30. Another guy pulling out said he got a couple Browns too. Great day to be on the water. Luck to all. 15. Congratulations. That's quite an achievement for her. Now get your fat old butt out there & catch some fish! Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. One cure for that is spelled c-a-m-e-r-a. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. As long as you have the dot on the display, the power head should be ok. Power does have a direct path to the battery right? and not thru any boat electronics terminals? Like above, I'm guessing a connection. Paddle wheel rotates freely? Coated cable? When you unscrew the cap, you don't have any water coming out do you? New battery? If you've gone thru everything in the manual, you might want to call moor electronics. www.moorelectronics.com Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. http://www.justia.com/injury/boat-accidents/ http://www.boattest.com/resources/view_ ... ?NewsID=76 http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/1998stats.htm http://www.articlesbase.com/personal-in ... 44472.html http://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1/Pub ... s_2008.pdf Interestingly NYS has DUI & DWI laws for autos but only has DWI for boating. Perhaps Boating should have an “open container law†for boating just like autos have? i.e you can’t have alcohol on board if it’s intended for onboard consumption. Nahh, that wouldn’t work, there’d probably be a trail of beer cans in the water from the Niagara to Henderson, whenever the CG came out. Interesting also is a point everyone seems to be missing and that is for an auto license you’re required to pass a written exam and a road test. Boating course doesn’t require the “road†test, rather they assume you already know how to launch, drive & handle a boat. Seems to me that issues with driving, handling and just paying attention when operating the boat cause the most accidents, not whether I know “Red-Right-Returning.†I don’t think I’ve ever heard another boat blow his horn thus indicating his intention. I take that back…I heard the Stephen B. Roman blow his horn once…but I think he was saying “get the “F†out’a my way!" On a related issue: My hats off to the sailing school every Saturday morning on the Genny for teaching the junior ragboaters how to handle their small craft. Unfortunately, they’re also teaching them how to jam up the entire channel so other boats can’t get through. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. Pretty clever. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. I always look at the tail first, then the anal fin, then the mouth. “Black mouth†is misleading as I’ve never known “how black is blackâ€. There are many shades of black from pitch black to charcoal. This guy’s anal fin is a dead giveaway. The King is the only one with an anal fin like this. It's much longer than it is high. http://www.seagrant.sunysb.edu/glsportf ... io2012.pdf Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. Yep - little natural Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. For anyone having doubts about Fish ID, Sea Grant has issued a new guide to Big-O fish Identification. It has them all side by side and includes Lake phase,Stream phase and what the “little ones†look like (smolt & parr) http://www.seagrant.sunysb.edu/glsportf ... io2012.pdf Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. You do have the probe with the white dot up....right? (not trying to be a wiseguy but if the probe is on upside down, you won't get anything. Don't ask how I know Tom B. (LongLine)
