  1. Actually Ray, I thought you were going to mention that GPS works on triangulation and that it'll make a difference if you're sitting on Yank's flying bridge (8 ft off the water) or have your butt parked in a kayak. The important part with the probe is that it is repeatable. If it registers 2.5 mph down and you're catching fish, it really doesn't matter if you're actually going 6.2 mph. Just adjust your speed to maintain the 2.5 downspeed & chances are very good that you'll repeat your catch. Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. Anyone notice our tsunamis early Saturday afternoon? Layover22 in the intro thread saw it in a creek out his way. You’ll hardly ever notice them because the lake has to be very calm and there has to be some heavy duty seismic activity some place. The water level gauges picked up something very interesting: Olcott Rochester Oswego All of them (around the great lakes) picked it up in the same time period. Here’s Erie PA. Yes we had a drastic barometer change & yes there were some major upwellings on the lake But what’s really interesting is that a volcano erupted down Chile way (South America) and had many (230) earthquakes associated with it (same time period). http://www.volcanolive.com/news.html Tom B. 3. From one TB to another - Happy Birthday. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. You did the right thing in calling the CG. You honestly thought you were going down. Let them make the call as to come get you, direct other boats in the area to help you, etc. Glad you made it back okay. Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Let's see. If GPS says I'm doing 3 mph that means I'm going about 4.4 ft/sec. (3mph x 5280 ft/mile)/3600sec/hr = 4.4 ft/sec. Hmm...the best commercially available GPS is only accurate to within 3 ft of your actual position. Hmm... If at time zero your at location zero, then at 1 second you think you've gone 4.4 ft because your GPS reads 3.0 mph but you may have really only gone 1.4 ft or you may have gone 7.4 ft. 1.4 ft/sec is 0.95 mph and 7.4ft/sec is 5.0 mph. Love that TRUE measurement.... Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. Did somje searching. There was a major volcano erruption down in Chile on saturday. Something like 230 earthquakes in 7 around that time. On a perfectly calm day, you can see mini-tsunamis set up on the lake. N0ormally no one can notice them as there's usually some small wind wave action going on. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Welcome to the board. Some big upwellings on the Canadian side. Check out the water levels on the south side for 2:00 saturday. Olcott, Rochester & Oswego all registered some interesting blips. http://www.great-lakes.net/conditions/o ... tml#levels Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. End of the month the lake with stratify horizontally. When that happens find the thermocline & fish just above it, below it & in it. Till then, there are a different three distinct temperature phenomena in central Big-O. The near shore is fairly constant. A little further out where your temp probe seems to go "nutz" is where the waters are mixing - upwellings, downwellings, ekert's, laminars, scum lines, the whole shooting match. A little further out it's stable again but quite cold. Our querry seems to like the stable water but will dart into the mixing area if properly temped. Browns on the inside, salmon & Stl hds on the outside. Also factor into the equation some light penetration. On days like this last weekend, they were high in the column - calm & heavy overcast. On bright choppy days they'll generally be a little deeper and on bright calm days they'll generally be deepest. This past weekend the mixing area was at about 60-90 FOW. Next weekend, it may move some due to the weather - sunshine, clouds, wind etc. The last couple days saw a lot of fish swirling & lots caught roughly 30 ft down in 100-200FOW. They were obviously right on the surface and ducked down & away from the boats. Come Mid-August it's a different story. If your central this week, I'd advise starting at about 95 FOW & zigzaging out to about 150FOW & working that area over pretty good. If cloudy, set a rigg'r about 25-30ft down with a fairly short lead. For spoons, run Golds, purples, reds on cloudy days. If bright set it down a little lower & run greens & blues. H.I.H. Tom B. 9. Happy B'day Fx Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. You're reading the RPM in the transmission & it's being converted to a speed. BTW if your spinning your wheels, one wheel is traveling a lot faster than the car. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. Except when you turn that corner or round that bend. Slip differentials.... Is there a straight road around here, or for that matter a boat traveling in a straight line? Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. LongLine Launched about 5:30, calm with heavy clouds. A look backward: A look forward Headed out to 90FOW between Russell & River then worked out to 210 & back. Scum lines with lots of sticks/branches at 107, 160. 48F on surface out there. Generally 2 degrees less at 40 ft down. A few others out, mostly 100-130FOW but scattered pretty well. Anyways, 4 of these on Purple DWSS at 16 down (short leads): (Stl Hd) And two of these with NK Gold Chicken Wings at 40 down – Naturals. (Again short leads) Clean screen most of the way. Couple large marks near bottom out deep, but could of been almost anything. Occasional light sprinkle – just enough to put the canvas up. Heard on radio that a storm front was just crossing Toronto at 10:15 so picked up & scooted back in. Wind picked up from east on way back in. Lots of limbs in river – just big enough to do some damage if you hit them too fast. Mud plume trailed off to the east. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. That same rubber tape can be purchased at Home Depot & Lowes (much cheaper) Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. There are ways: 1. Regardless of currents, if you making a turn, the inboard ball goes slower than the boat while the outside goes faster than the boat. (arc length difference) 2. If you raise or lower the ball, it has a vertical velocity while the boat doesn't. 3. If you snag a ball, it becomes stationary while the boat is still moving. 4. If you snap a cable, the ball drops to the bottom probably faster than your boat can go at full speed. Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Done. Anyone want a job as a dead bird collector? Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Watch out for letting them jump into the water...that water is COLD! You may want to work out a compromise with the type of fishing. A fast boat ride, an hour of trolling, another fast boat ride then an hour of worm dunking. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. Ditto the foam. I had to replace mine on an 18 ft'r. It gets awful heavy. Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. Big Dave just let out a secret. Red disappears in the visible spectrum at certain depths, but fish have more cones in their eyes than humans do. They can see red deeper than we can with those uv cones. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. Ray's boxes work great. I make my own dividers by ripping a cutting board, cutting the slots in them & screwed them in. Also I use tubes for flies. (but make sure you have some vent holes in the caps so residual water can dry) Ray - Do use a treble or siwash with that bait? ....Actually I find cats make great tire tread lubrication. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. Ditto with Skipper19 & Gill-T. A double flying solo is rough on the ticker. Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. Having a little guy on the boat means you need 6 eyes & lots of patience. When my oldest was 3 or 4 ...(long long time ago) I bought a toy tug boat (They were cheap back then). Tied a string on it & let him tow it behind. Of course, he wore a life jacket & was teethered too. 33 yrs later, he still remembers it. Try letting him steer but give him a target to head for. (Patience Dad!) See if he can follow the compass heading. Also to yell out when something comes across the fish finder. Let him pick out some of the lures. Also check for seaweed often. Let him reel it in to check. See if he can predict which rod will fire first. Pretzels make the best snacks. If you have a canvas top boat, put the canvas up so he sits in the shade. Make up a travel game between the two of you. (Just like the travel game with horses & cememtaries) First one to spot a cabin cruiser yells "ZIP." 1st one to spot a speed boat/ragboat/freighter/floating log yells "dunk your cruisers." Of course you have to have some "Zips" in order to dunk the other guys cruisers. Good luck, Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. I was a ways west of you today. (Russell) 1. Did you see "minnows" jumping out of the water to get away from them? If not, they were probably steelhead or atlantics chasing bugs. There were bugs all over out there today. I saw a few small swirrels within 20 ft of my boat. 2 &3. Very possible planners would have helped somewhat. If there's 2 or more of you on the boat then definitely put at least one planner board out this time of year. Fish may be out over deep water but they were not generally deep in the water column. (other than the big Kings & Lakers) Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. Fishing Report LongLine Launched at 5:30. No one else around. Guess the "Rib Fest" scared them off. Couldn't get a picture of the sunrise as I don't think I saw the sun till about 9:30. (heavy clouds) Flat as a mill pond out there. Headed toward Russell & can you say "chocolate"? Brown water out to about 80 FT. Low 50's on surface. Put in at about 95 FOW; worked out to 250 FOW then back in, closer to River. Only saw one bait pod & that was in 125 FOW. Did see a few "heavy" marks near bottom over 170. Man where did those flies come from...take your bug spray with you. 49F on surface at 250. 6-8 other boats eventually out there. Anyways 1 shaker king (clipped) at 45 over 190 on a NK Glo Clown, 25 ft back and a small Rainbow on a DW Dolphin at 25 over 215, also about 25 ft back. Long leads didn't work today. Pulled them up at 11:30. Water is very high at the river. 6 trailers in the lot. Looks like they're getting ready to start collecting launch fees. Luck to all. Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. I haven't had a real problem fishing out of Roch unless you want to count that Fast Fairy fiasco; the concrete ship in the fog; those morons that cruise within 100 ft of you throwing a 3 ft wake; a few ragboats every year that sail real close to see if you're catching anything (while your fighting a fish solo) and of course the rest of the ragboats that set up their race course where you're fishing, just as the bite turns on. them all....
