Trolling Spoon Action
LongLine replied to sszoldra's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
If they're thin spoons then definitely yes. Thicker spoons aren't affected as much. You can play around trying to find equal weight hooks but the treble offers more resistance in the water due to it's greater surface area. Trebles will allow you to troll a little faster before the lure "spins-out." Conversely, Singles allow you to troll slower before the lure action dies. (with no tuning) However, if your good at tuning the lure, most of the action can be put back into the lure. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Baitfish seem to be up. Smelt numbers increase definitely surprised a lot of people this year. Heck of a lot of little salmon caught this year everywhere on the lake. Fishing pressure was down but catches were up. So the question is should a new salmon rod & reel be on your Christmas list? HEL[ YES...It's gonna be a great year! (But be prepared to go deep) Tom B. Stan I suspect we all have downriggers. The first patented one was the "hirty-girty" which was 1st used on the "left coast." Of course they stole the concept from some indians fishing the great Lakes in the 1800's Tom B. (LongLine)

kliph Fleas (There’s a way to do it other than just spray a mess) Ernie Send me some “3F†bulk spools (free, fresh, & full) & I will. Actually, what I found really interesting was the stretch & the return to length when the load was released. Kind of makes you wonder what stress is put on the reel spool after you’ve reeled in a fish & finally land it. Tom B. (LongLine) BTW – DO NOT use it on auto door hinges!

So here’s a researcher stating that just raising & lowering water levels on the St Lawrence can release toxins from the sediments. And some people say I’m “strange†because I believe construction of foundations & transmission lines in USEPA Areas of Concern is a major mistake. http://www.healthcanal.com/environmenta ... rthed.html Tom B. A USGS press release announcing they received a “partners in conservation†award: From the mouth of Sec of the Interior Ken Salazar http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=2613 The DEC shared in the award. It’s nice to know that the guy who has the final voice on the sitting of off-shore turbines publicly recognizes how important our National Treasures (the Great Lakes) are to the people. Tom B. Some guys have said that WD-40 “hurts†fishing line, so I decided to play myth-buster. I took two lengths of line off an unused spool; tied each end to an “s†hook with Palomar knots; suspended them from a board; attached a 10# weight to them; sprayed one with WD-40 and let hang undisturbed down in the basement for a week. The line was 15# PLine CXX. Unsprayed line was initially 30 ½†knot to knot. Sprayed line was 31 ¾â€. The weight stretched the unsprayed line immediately to 33 ½â€. The sprayed line immediately stretched to 35â€. Both lines were measured every night. No further stretch was observed. Neither line broke after 7 days. Weights were just removed about an hour ago. The unsprayed line returned to 30 ¾†and the sprayed one returned to 32 1/8â€. The unsprayed line felt dry and the sprayed one felt “oily.†Both lines were smooth and straight. I couldn’t see any splits, nicks, etc on either line with a magnifier. I tied an overhand knot in the middle of each line and gave each 3 good tugs, at arm’s length, to tighten the knots. Both made a pretty good “boing†noises on the tugs. Neither line broke. My conclusion – it didn’t hurt this line. Tom B. (LongLine) BTW: there’s no “fish oil†in WD-40.

Very quick New York State fishing regulations question...
LongLine replied to tonyb's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Read Michigan's. They can use three rods. Note: they have a rod rule for sportsfishing. NYS has a line rule for sportsfishing. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Downrigger trolling newbie.. any help?
LongLine replied to bulletbob's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Bullet – Keep it simple as you start out. Rigg’rs are all about depth control. You need to master the placement of your lure relative to where the fish are. I.e. learn to set the depth relative to interpretation of your fish finder. Knowing the temp and speed at the ball can help you a lot. Blowback of the cable and currents on Big-O have to be overcome. One of the rigger’s biggest advantages is that it allows you to use fairly light line to play the fish. With clean spoons, in clean water on Big-O, I rarely run over 10-12 Lb test. For flasher/flies, I step up a little. A great deal depends on the release you use & how you set it. Black’s is a very popular release but many guys favor pinch pads. (I’m addicted to Black’s myself.) During flea season, lines get stepped up a little. When I started salmon fishing, it was in a 14ft boat with a manual Riviera, a 6 1/2 ft Cherywood, a Mitchell 300, 8 Lb line and about a dozen lures. Oh, how it has evolved. One thing that hasn’t changed is that my hooks are unbelievably sharp. Another thing to look at is the tuning of your lures. When you’re jigging, you impart the specific action to your bait. When you’re trolling, the lure runs by itself. When you turn, 1 will speed up & the other will slow down. Make sure your lures are running the way you want them to, before you lower them down. Rigg'rs are one trolling tool. There are many tools. However, it's a safe bet that 98% of all the trollers on Big-O have at least one down all the time. Tom B. (LongLine)
