  1. WTG. It's great to run into a bunch of fish with the kids along. (However it's another story when the little guy starts saying"..Here Dad, you take it...it's a little one". - just playing) Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. WTG, Did those skippers have adipose fins? Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Definitely the Kaho. It conducts alewife & smelt netting transects at many places including Olcott, 30 mile, Oak, Hamlin, Rochester & a bunch of places East during May & June. They start around 140 FOW & go out to 500FOW or so. In mid July through August they take a shot at the laker population to get a handle on how restoration is coming along, same places plus a few randomly chosen ones. Gill nets plus a few trawls. The commercial guys (& there were only 3 in 2009) work out of the East end & target perch. Ocassionally, you'll see the newer SETH GREEN which sometimes assists the Kaho. Also sometimes you'll see the Federal LAKE GUARDIAN out there taking water samples. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. Looks like maybe the Niagara legislature is coming to their senses: http://niagara-gazette.com/local/x82928 ... -farm-plan Hopefully, Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Black's here 3. Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. Unfortunately Hank's right on this one. How's your oil look? Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. As rd said store it in a cool dark place. (not on the boat) Actually it's uv light that deterioates it so don't store it under flourescent lights. How long it's good for also depend on the #test. 30 Lb will deterioate and may only be as strong as 20 #, but hey that's still pretty strong. 8# on the other hand..... When you can pull it through your fingers and get a white powder on your fingers, toss it. Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. If you're using 25 Lb & bending hooks then it's a pretty safe bet you drag is way too tight. Let them run a little, keep the line tight but don't horse them. Tom B. (LongLine)
  9. Welcome to the board. Blue Finn - Now there's a boat! (mine's 18ft) Don't be too awful concerned with surface speed. Check you lure action off the side/back of the boat while going in different directions. That 2.5 may just be perfect with a NW heading. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Skipper - I don't know. I'm not one of those guys that stands in the stream whipping his fly so I have no experience with it. I've tried vegetable oil & baby oil but they don't last all that long. Shade - Haven't tried it yet this year, but last year, & the year before & the year before that & the year before that, it worked pretty well. What I do is spray a little on my finger & thumb then spool fresh line. Then out in the boat, every once in a while give the spool a quick shot. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. At the spring state of lake meeting DEC said that the preliminary and very preliminary figures indicated approx 20% of Kings were due to Nat Repro. Studies from SUNY ESF indicate that nat repro is highly variable from year to year. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. It works wonders BUT be prepared to change lines every 4th or 5th time out because it will deterioate mono. (that's why I use copolymer) Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. Party time! Happy Birthday. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. Welcome to the site. The kids will love it. & you will too, especially when one of them says " here Dad, you take it...It's a little one." Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Welcome to the site. Nice job. 1st is definitely a steelhead. Bright white mouth no spots to speak of on the flanks. 2nd is a coho. Gray mouth/gums not black, shape of the anal fin, no spots on both halves of the tail. (If mouth jet black, anal fin more parallel to body & spots on both halves of tail then it would be a King) Tom B. (LongLine) Ray - Catfish...Carp...??? You sure they're not smallmouth sturgeon?
  16. AH - Nice fish. Look at the roof of their mouths. AS have two rows of poorly developed teeth. Browns have single, centered, well defined patch of teeth up there. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. Hans, Were the kings clipped? Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. BW, If you have problems getting fleas off you lines try reeling them up until they are about 8-10 ft away from your rod tip, put rod tip in the water then whip it straight up and out of the water. They'll be cut right off. But be careful that the lure is not to close or it'll jump at you. Some guys smack the surface with the rod tip, but I'm always afraid of breaking the tip. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. I used to think something was wrong with my unit as it does that this time every year. After I had it checked out, I realized that local currents go all over the place and: This time of year, it issue goes away when I clear the seaweed/fleas off the cable & head north. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. BW, If what you're doing works well for you, why change? Wire is another weapon in the arsenal. It helps with fleas & the hit will be more "vicious" as it doesn't stretch. If you can get down with no problem & have no problem with releases, hookups or fleas.... Yes downspeed matters. With/across/against currents will often yield different results. Somedays you can't buy a bite in one direction. As to currents, don't be surprised if when you're hardly moving, the cables are out at 45 degrees. Personally, I like to go across the current for best speed control. Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. Yes. Salmon use baitfish, temperature and currents as their "structure." When you run into them, try to observe what else is going on in that area. Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. The 2009 Annual report is finally on-line: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27068.html Tom B. (LongLine) man, that took long enough!
  23. Fishing Report: LongLine Launched by 5:30. Clear sky. Good S wind. Headed west & out to 135FOW where I setup on top of this: Took the northern path and got this chunker at 105 over 200FOW. (9Lb Coho) Then this guy at 80 over 250FOW. (11 Lb stlhd) Kept going N, out to 335FOW and back in to 200 running into 5 of these guys along the way: 3 of the five had their adipose fins. (wild fish) Everything caught on DWSS Bloody D’th & NK28 purple spook, short leads run clean on the riggers. Thermocline setting up but very narrow. Standing still, the 105 rigg’r was in 48F. At 2 1/4 mph it was in 58F. Beautiful morning on the lake. Off at 11:00. Maybe a dozen trailers at the launch. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. Sorry to hear the bad news Vince. Thoughts & prayers go out to your whole family. Tom B. (LongLine)
