emk101, welcome to the addiction!! I took my nephew out Friday morning, fished just West of Braddocks Bay. picked up 3 kings, his first "big " fish on a wire diver. All fish in the 220 / 250 fow range, approx. 75 / 90 deep. Check out this you tube link, ... lots of good info to get you started. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdcBRDO8JOP6Ruoqcf2M7tQpvG-0-VTL9 Welcome to the club!! JIm S.

I've mounted a few in my day... make sure you check motor position in both the upright and stowed positions before drilling holes. If possible, mount it so the head unit can be supported along the gunnel if you are going to pound waves on the big lake. My long shaft head unit is supported with a RAM mount when I'm not using it. I've been using the VK flashers for a few seasons now and really like the action they produce. They are adjustable for different actions, Here;s a video I found showing them underwater. I run them on the setting shown in the first video segment... sort of an erratic swimming action. I'm not affiliated with the product in any way, I just like them.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5e2OKLUYTw

Dropped in solo for a quick morning run out of Braddocks.... putted out of the so called channel, as it was my first trip out of the bay this season. Some areas of the channel showing 1.6 ft. of water under my 17 ft. tin boat. I can't wait until they start dredging later this summer. 8 boats off the bay, mostly 60 -100 ft. of water, bait and fish everywhere... mid 40's temp. down 60ft.. .. dead flat calm, no clouds... slow bite. The third rod down was a VK flasher with a 4.0 Apex watermelon behind it .... this combo seems to take at least 1 fish every time it's been in the water for the last couple of seasons.. The rig stayed down about 30 seconds, and fired with a 26" Atlantic... first one I've caught in a long time. Tried the usual tactics, lures size, color, brand, flashers and dodgers, changed direction and speeds, couldn't get them to go. Many boats headed out deep, I had business, so I headed back in after 2 hours. This could be a good starting point for other weekend warriors... lots of fish in the area if you can figure out the program. Jim S.

I checked out the launch Friday around noon. 3 trailers in the lot, construction work still ongoing, but 2 ramps were open. Construction workers had painted a sign on a sheet of plywood "BOATS ONLY" and put it at the ramp entrance. I think we are good to go...

There are many marine grade products that you can paint on and will give you a rubber, skid free surface. The coating used on cruise ships around the pool decks is available online in dozens of colors. http://www.durabakcompany.com/marine.htm

I stopped by the marina Saturday morning and met the gentleman the town has hired to get the renovation ball rolling. He spoke of a number of improvements coming to the marina over the next few years. As of today, the marina is back open, business as usual, $8.00 launch fee, leave the cash in the mail slot in the office door if you launch before they open in the morning. Jim S.

I stopped by the marina on E. Manitou Rd this morning after breakfast. The road is blocked off at the main gate... as of now, the marina is closed to the public. The car top launch area is still open. Wanted to post this info. so someone doesn't drag their rig down only to get turned away. I live a mile from the marina and will check things out a few times each week and report any changes or activity here. Jim S.

If it's in your budget, the best method is to mount a section of track. This allows movement of riggers and rod holders as the setups change during the fishing season. I use different rod holder positions in the spring for shallow board fishing than I do for riggers and wire divers later in the season. Nothing worse than mounting riggers and rod holders to the boat, only to find out later they are not in the right location. Tracks offer infinite changes to the setup without drilling a ton of holes.......... ask me how I know..... Just my $.02

I'm the guy ERABBIT is talking about. PM me your email address and I will send you a copy of the post I put together a few years back. I also fish alone most trips, and only run Slide Divers with my wire. Jim

Braddocks will be dredged, and new barrier beaches installed by the Army Core of Engineers starting this spring. Word on the street.... the marina off E.Manitou Rd. is to receive major upgrades. I'm hoping someone else can add some info on the marina, as the docks are taped off, and the office is empty. http://www.lrb.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorks/DistrictProjects/BraddockBay.aspx

Braddocks bay report

How was the water level? Braddocks is my home port, but I'm nervous about the old trolley pilings that would be just below the water lever about now. Hitting one of them with my tin boat doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. The channel won't be marked until the end of the month. Could you get a visual on the pilings when leaving the bay? -
Slide Divers for me the past 10 seasons. Wire all year long, a longer mono leader in the spring

Turning with the big boards out has to be a slow, wide turn, or you end up with the problems you describe. I've used the old "Jolly Releases" for years with no problems, but they seem to have gone out of business. I changed over to the Scotty mini releases and they seem to be no problem if they end up in the water for a bit.

I use Sterns, West Marine, and an Onyx belt pack when it's hot out. Also had one deploy in a hot, wet storage locker. I fish mostly alone and never ever leave the dock without using one. I agree the best thing to do is try a few on at the store and fid the one that fits you best. They are pricey, but how much is your life worth?? We spend thousands on fishing equipment, then complain about the price of life jackets....... At least wear a belt pack if you don't like the vest style. Here's a video of the belt pack I use when it's too warm to use a vest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB1K2wJC8Vc
