I did something like that this spring with my Scotty's. Made plates to go between the swivel base and the riggers out of 3/8" thick aluminum. I cut the curvy shapes with a jig saw.... it takes a while, but I got exactly what i wanted, and mounted a Trax-Tech single rod holder on them. I made templates out of some heavy cardboard first to get the shapes right. . Jim

I fish from a 17 footer, and netting a fish with a long dipsy lead can be a problem. I use Slide Divers instead of Dipsys, allows me to vary the leader length, and makes netting a fish much easier. I have found that shorter rods also help on a smaller boat. You can make this sport as expensive or as reasonable as you want, my diver rods are 7 1/2 foot musky rods from Bass Pro @ $25 each. I use Diawa line counter reels and have never had a problem with them. Invest in good rod holders - no plastic! For the rest of the fall season, you can run J-plugs on the surface from top lines around the harbors and inlets, no divers or riggers needed. Something in a green glo pattern will be your best bet. Please fill out your profile with more info. If we knew where you were located, and which port you were fishing from, we could offer some ideas for that area of the lake. Good Luck !

Sept 27 out of Rochester
J.D. replied to tannero's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
+ 1 with Cheers. We did a charter out of the Oak a few years back to learn how to catch staging kings in late fall. All fish came on J-Plugs run on top lines, and riggers 3-5 feet down. Green glo, black ladder back took most of the hits. Capt. John said the agressive fish will be moving near the surface, the negative, moody kings on the bottom will be much harder to trigger a strike. -

The state refuses to fix it because of low traffic volume. Maybe if the fixed it, more people would use it again. I drive on the shoulder instead of the lanes......

Looking for new coated cable for my Depth Raider, E-Bay has a number of cables listed from a company called "Acculon" I'm not sure where Kell Labs, or others get their cables from, wondering if anyone here has used Acculon cables. Thanks, JIm This is a 300 foot spool of 135 pound Acculon nylon coated fishing wire. Acculon is made up of 7 strands of stainless steel that is then coated in a black nylon. It is intended to be used for downrigger cable or making fishing leaders. This product is 100% American Made, and it is lead free. By tightly stranding seven stainless steel wires together, the Acculon leader wire refrains from kinking while providing excellent strength. It is then coated in clear nylon to further prevent any type of rust that could accumulate after years of use. The overall diameter of this wire is about .039".

Bullying at Bluffers
J.D. replied to gen-st's topic in Ontario, CA Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (North Shore)
Sea-IV, You have more tolerance for BS than I do. If I ran a charter business, I would allow beer and wine only, and a set amount per person. As someone who doesn't drink, I can't stand to be around someone who is sloppy drunk and confrontational, and then be responsible for their safety. If you needed to drink that much to have fun, you would have to find another charter. Just my $.02 -
I also started with pancake weights, and had the same tangle issues others describe. Changed to the heavy Atomic torpedo weights, last Friday fished 2 riggers, boom tips 11 feet apart, 135 and 150 down in the currents off Braddocks Bay. Never had a tracking issue.

Ran out of Braddocks for a few hours this morning looking for kings. Riggers were parked with 130 to 150 feet of cable out to hit temps in the 50's. We worked 100 to 350 with only one hit, 18 lb. king on a bullfrog paddle with a green glow fly. All the bait was below 125. The good news, my nephew picked up his first Lake Ontario King

king temp question
J.D. replied to dremarquis's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Here are a few graphics from a study on lake Huron a couple of years back. The kings were caught and implanted with data storage tags, retrieved later by fishermen catching the tagged fish. It clearly shows how the salmon moved out of prefered temps. in the late summer and fall. The second chart shows depth movement. -

I fish solo most of the time, and I've given the Autotether a good look, but can't bring myself to trust my life to a battery powered gizmo. I have a cutoff switch like Sk8man shows above. The red cuttoff cord is attached to a heavy 1" wide webbed strap about 7 feet long ( I have a small boat), and clipped onto the back strap of my auto inflate pfd. I can move around the boat with no problems. If I go over, the cord pulls out stopping the motor, the pfd inflates to pop me up like a cork, and I have a folding ladder on the transom to get back in the boat. Should I be cold, injured, or not have the strength to climb the boarding ladder, ( I'm old now), My Merc outboard has a trim switch on the side of the motor to help out. I can hug the motor with my feet on the cavatation plate, hit the trim switch, and the motor will tilt up almost horizontal and I can slide off the motor into the boat. A co-worker used this method a few years ago spring fishing from his bass boat in cold water. With the heavy, wet clothes, he couldn't pull himself back in the boat after he fell off, but used the big Merc outboard and trim switch to lift him back to safety. Just my $.02
