Keith, just wanted to say that I'm a different poster than Chinook35 as addressed above. Just wanted to clarify any confusion here or any in the future- Chinook-( the original one)
-
Have to agree with Tim. Having used most on the market thru the years, I'm currently using the Scotty's.

Steve, thanks for taking an interest in this and letting us know. Dave has responded to this board in the past. Just last year, Mark AKA, ReelJerks wanted to know why it was that rec boat names were not appearing on the LOC leader board . He made a post, followed by many posts in agreement, Dave heard the public input, so I believe he changed the policy so each weigh station could use their own discretion that if a name was not offensive, then it would be posted. So good luck and keep us posted. Lastly, if you find out he is in a good mood the day you talk to him, ask him about moving the cut-off for weigh ins back to 9:00 p.m. for the fall derby That I know, many of us would like to see-

Steve, I don't think it is so much a sticky question, as to some simply don't know . Myself included. I have often wondered why it is , that come the Orleans Co. derby time, that Capt. Cove doesn't sell the entires but Narbys' does. I support and patronize them both- having said that.

Musky, if you are referring to when the oscillating feature is set, it comes up 5 feet from the point of your deepest set. I have mine set at 60 second intervals. Also, if you first really load the rod up to begin with, at 5 feet ascend, there is not enough so called slack to be concerned with. Not saying that a few on board on occasion, has thought that rod has fired Otherwise at one minute settings you would be constantly reloading that particular rod. I hope I answered your question.

spring kings - the bar
chinook replied to slapshot's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Meant to write when Ernie gave his presentation at the LOTSA event- Not LOC- had a brain fart there. -
Have to agree with Jerry. He summed it up well. I have been using the digi-trols now for going on 5 years. Best rigger on the market I.M.O. Another great feature is that of the 5 memory settings. This is an extremely keen feature when wanting to replicate the exact target depth. Also when at the back of the boat you can monitor the bottom depth as well. Short stop feature as well as 3 programmable settings for lowering and raising the rigger ball. As you mentioned, they are not cheap, but I feel that they are worth the money.

spring kings - the bar
chinook replied to slapshot's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
If you are derby fishing and consistently catching smaller targets, move from the area. I know that numbers are good to catch but if you are targeting larger kings, you may need to skirt the edges and move on. I know that goes against the grain of not leaving fish to find fish , but from my past experience and that of Ernie L. he even touched on that at the LOC presentation. Outside of derby fishing is obviously a different scenario Also, we use the J-13 which would simulate that of the smelt, with good success in the past. -
Fishing out of the Oak and since Mick is a regular on here, have to say The Black North Inn as well. But will also have to mention - Tillman's- The Village Inn on the corner of 104 & 98

Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Meeting Scheduled
chinook replied to Persistence's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I agree with Tim and Persistance whole heartedly about the class survival rate. Also, agree that I think that 1 year we won't see that much of a drop off in the fishery. Having said that- there are a few variables that come into play. The penrearing projects themselves have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt their return success in each location for KINGS other than the return rate to the Lower Niagara( the steelhead rates however are a success) Whereas back in the early and mid 90's where 1 million chinooks were being stocked especially in the western basin( direct stock) the return rate to those streams were almost non existent. The year of the big kings ( 99 ) where the top 11 ( fall LOC )weighed in at over 40 #s the years leading up to that the numbers being stocked were as Tim mentioined app 1 M. The one factor being lost however, even knowing that natural reproduction is taking place esp out East, the Province of Ontario itself I believe is no longer taking place with the Chinook program, other than 2 sites penrearing app. 10,000 and a few local clubs putting in token numbers. Maybe someone can correct me on this. Bottom line, I remember when the stocking levels went from 3.5 M down to 1 M . The bait fish crashed in the early 90's .I had a lengthy conversation with the powers to be, and their contention was at that time they (the DEC) were trying to promote Ontario from a numbers taken to what they considered a Trophy fishery- That being kings trying to exceed 30 pounds plus. Well we all know what happened after that. A boom for years to come of the search for the elusive 40 pounder. So there may be a silver lining in this happening. After all, we enjoy the finest king fising in the entire great lakes I M O . Michigan may get higher numbers but they would give an eye tooth for a king over 30. Sorry so lenghty, just trying to give the newbies a brief stocking history. -
Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Meeting Scheduled
chinook replied to Persistence's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Misty- the last figure I heard to be stocked this year was 900,000 Well short of their goal. Some of the eggs collected last year were not in the best of condition. Maybe Tim B. will chime in on this for he is rather knowledgeable along these lines. However, I do know that the Salmon River will be getting 100% of their allocation. Since they are the primary breed stock. So look for drastic numbers reduced this spring for the remaining stocking sites -
Go thru and read the first page of this thread. NBK stingers are mentioned as well as a few D.W's The D.W. metallic super slim frog was on fire last year at the Oak, which is why I mentioned that spoon in my post

jvd- Welcome aboard. Always remember that no question is a dumb question. Only the one that gets left unasked. So feel free to fire away anytime. We all had to learn at one time or another. And we all continue to learn from one another. That is what makes this site top notch.

Yankee, how the heck did I not notice you, if you sat in on the DEC presentation? There were maybe 30 people sitting in on that one. Would have introduced myself if I recognized you. Anyways, have to agree that it was worth sitting in on. The DEC pretty well comfirmed that numbers for kings for this years stocking will be down from what they thought just a few weeks ago. I think they mentioned app 900,000 if memory serves me right?

Tim- I'm glad I finally got to meet you. I know you, as well as Joe and others put a ton of time into the LOTSA club and it's events. Good going on the pen raising efforts. If you ever want to fish the Oak sometime let me know.Be glad to have you on board- Duane

Wish I would have met some of you guys. I did meet Mark and introduce myself quickly as I was leaving. It was a great event, and I would encourage all who are not members to join this club. Best $10.00 you can spend.

I did notice the post about Johns' passing on the Oak site. Sorry to hear about that. He will be missed by plenty.

Last year would have been Dreamweaver Super Slim Metallic Frog and N.K. Purple Thunder/ gold cup. Not to many years ago it would have been Pirate 55 dimpled lazer spook with red eye and the 42 second spoon. Not that these won't take their share of targets now.

I voted for bows myself. But another trophy fish not listed is the Atlantic. I realize that they are not nearly as plentiful however. Also, if it is any consolation to Nick, the best Atlantic I ever caught was returned to me in a condition that I too was dissatisfied with. The taxidermist did a phenomenal job on the king I had done, but the Atlantic was a different story.

I also have the Big Jons' and really like them. The heavy duty works well for the diver rods, and I have the stanchion mounts that I use when I fish with the in lines for clearance. As Eric mentioned they can be easily adjusted as well. Maniac- Nice pic of your releases used to prevent line creepage. Good idea.

WTB Sea Ray Amberjack 270 or equal (Penn Yan hardtop)
chinook replied to seasquirrel's topic in Boats for Sale
I 2nd that statement in agreement by L&M and Yankee. I have a 24' Penn Yan Contender and the gunnels are high in my opinion. I feel extremely safe fishing out of it. -
Fishtails-Rod, by all means I didn't mean to offend you by my last post. Rereading it, I can see where you might take exception to it. That was never my intent. In all honesty, I was in a hurry to get out the door , for I'm on the board of directors for our local little league and signups was starting in less than twenty minutes, and I'm in charge of registrations. Please accept my apologizes if you were offended-

in all honesty, i don't think the impact overall will be all that significant. Yes it is disappointing that this happened. But hopefully it will be a one year occurrence. Obviously it is going to effect the fishery a few years down the road, but to suggest the the DEC lower limits over it is just not going to happen. My point is that last we knew that some natural reproduction does occur mainly on the eastern basin. So what does occur will hopefully somewhat off set this loss. Again, if we are talking more than 1 year that this happens then the fishery would be greatly impacted IMO. This is my contention, knowing natural reproduction occurs mainly in the Salmon, even though it is the primary brood stock, I feel others ( rivers) should be the recipient of a certain percentage from them( the salmon river) as well.

The Salmon River getting 100% or their normal allotment? Doesn't surprise me. Sounds like the mid 90's again. Obviously what happened is a travesty, not only with the lack of eggs collected but now news that some of those that were taken were in poor condition. My only question is why wouldn't there be shared sacrifice for use of a better term, across the entire southern shoreline? I know that the Altmar hatchery is located on the Salmon, and hopefully this would only be a 1 year setback. But there are other major rivers that will see a significant reduction in this springs allotment of kings. The Oak, Genne, and Eighteen mile just to name a few. I do know it was mentioned since LOTSA helped in the late egg collection, that Eighteen mile wouldn't be hit as hard however. Given these numbers by the DEC does any one know the app. stocking numbers whether it be direct stock or pen reared for each location? As far as other species being added to make up for the short fall, I wouldn't count on it. Hopefully I'm wrong.

jimski2- touched on a good point above. I also run my speed and temp on a Mag 10. Personally I don't want or need the high speed with this unit . I run the Digi Trol on my out downs and the Mag 10 on the temp/speed unit.
