  1. Hans, the 3 rod proposal has been on going for some time now. I don't want to cause any confusuion. I only rolled the proposed license fee increase as mentioned as a compromise, esp with the out of staters, such as myself and many others who post here. The 3 rod proposal would be for all who fish Lake Ontario. My point is trying to say that if they are going to enforce a $25.00 fee for someone who I take for 1 day as an example, that the extra few rods I could put into the spread may provide a fish whether it be for comsumption for even a trophy thus softening the blow of the additional expense for that particular individual. Again sort of a trade off.- I believe Tom has been the one who has brought the 3 rod proposal to the fore front. If not I apologize to those who did. Big Easy, I said it before that I would pay whatever the out of state cost is to fish Lake Ontario. 3 rods allowed or not. However, I think they are going to raise rates no matter what they decide on the 3 rod proposal. Guess it would be a liitle easier to explain to someone for the first time, that they may pay the 25 for 1 day,( this is geared towards the charters esp.) but their chance of a hookup has increased as well with the extra rods being allowed. Thanks for your input Duane
  2. Tom, thank you for the update on this. I have seen the proposed license increase on another thread. As I have said before, I will pay whatever it takes for a NR license. Having said that, like Eric and a few others mentioned, it will be quite a hit for the non resident. Esp. the fact of a 1 day license going to $25.00. I use to take my daughters out on occasion and spring for the $15. But after a few hours they're done. Going to $25, just seems rather extreme I.M.O.. So there is lost revenues there. But if they would allow the 3 rod, that would be somewhat of a compromise, for use of a better term. For I do see it effecting the charter industry as well. Again, thanks for your involvement in this plus the update-Duane
  3. Dave, I would take Eric's words of advice. I have seen some of his ties and they are very impressive. Nothing but top notch in my opinion. -Duane
  4. Andy, I would take the extra time to snip your Sampo ball bearing swivel off and retie to the ball bearing swivel itself right on the flasher. I know it would make it easier to just attach the Sampo to the ball bearing swivel, but I.M.O. you would then have 2 bearing swivels which in theory "could" counter act one another, and not possibly allowing the proper action from the flasher. Also, by eliminating the Sampo you have now taken out 1 link that could possibly fail, if you hit into a big guy-Duane
  5. Rod, having your crew mishandle the net and dumping a target is one thing, but your dedication in putting that king back in the boat speaks volumes. Hope it was your turn back on the rod after that.-Duane
  6. Thats what makes this board as good as it is. Hearing various opinions and ultimately making it of ones preference. I on the other hand like to use the 9' on my coppers running down the chute. I purchased the Ugly Stik from A-Tom-Mik and have nothing but good to say about them . The reason I like to run the longer rods is that it provides more clearance out the back in case of an outdown, or inside rigger rod takes a shot. The point of entry is further back. So I view that as a positive. I use the float to actually achieve greater distance for clearance, in case another rod does take a target. Tim B. had a writeup on the Pike float in this months G.L.A. mag. It really comes down to ones liking and preference. I just like knowing if and when, we take a target off another rod other than the copper, I have ample clearance to begin with esp. when a major hits. I feel the longer rod helps in acheiving this.- Duane
  7. Andy, As far as your dipseys tripping, and not your 10 color catching bottom, there are variables coming into play. First in depends on the actual dipsey size- ring or no ring- setting of the dipsey-a- 0 or 1 will dig deeper than a 3. Use of wire, braid or mono. Set back, speed and etc. I agree with Chad, that drag/ friction does come into play. Such as pulling a flasher/fly rig off a full core would make the rig rise, as evidenced when Ray said he hit bottom in 17 F.O.W. pulling 10 colors. Whereas using a full core and pulling a spoon would achieve greater depth I.M.O., due to less drag. In a nut shell, your dipsey rigs were obviously trolling deeper than your core line, at that time. Has nothing to do with the use of the boards- Duane
  8. Never, personally tried one. But if I remember right, there was a thread regarding their use a year or 2 ago. And from what I recall, they are more in tuned for higher speed trolling such as what is used in the salt water due to the aerodynamics of it. I don't think a whole lot of G.L. fishermen are using them. Could be wrong however.
  9. Tim, sent you a P.M.- Duane
  10. Mick, Ray, and Skipper19- Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge the efforts of the Oak site. I know they don't do it for notoriety, thats for sure. But a word of thanks can go a long way. After 200 views, and only 3 followups. makes me wonder if some don't realize how valuable that site is? -Duane
  11. Spring can't be to far behind. Joe and Shirley, of attheoak has this years' first posting as of yesterday. About the DEC looking for in put regarding the future of Lake Ontario fisheries. Just wanted to say many thanks for their continued postings of keeping us all updated to the latest happenings of not only the Oak area, but lake wide on occasion as well. Looking forward to this years fishing reports. I know they put a lot of time and energy into it. Just my way of saying " Thank You" to them -Duane
  12. Edd- When I have the need to stack, my choice of release is the Roemer. Off the ball,I like the Scotty's, but I.M.O.- the Roemer's are tough to beat for stacking. -Duane
  13. Andy, I agree with Tim on this one. I also use the Scotty's and have nothing but good to say about them. One plus that he touched on is the fact a dink or smaller target is very easy to see with the use of them. Just my opinion-By the way, nice to meet you over the weekend. We left around 3, and drove threw a whiteout almost the whole way home- Made it interesting-Duane
  14. Gambler, I didn't think to try the A-Tom-Mik site. Brain fart I guess. I went to the site Jolly posted and ordered from there, for that was as cheap as I have seen them. Depending on the price however, I would have just as soon patronize Tom. Did he have any the the X4's at the LOTSA event? I know we are not going to need these in the next month, but if things go with my luck being as is, I may see mine by the first of May after receiving the notice yesterday. It stated that the manufacturer is experiencing a shortage. Best of luck with the new probe this year. From the reports I have heard and read, it has received very favorable comments-Duane
  15. For those who may be thinking of ordering the the new FishHawk or the X4 probe, you may want to do it sooner rather than later. I placed an order last night, and got a message today, that due to the demand they are running at east 4 weeks behind. Just thought I'd give a heads up-Duane
  16. Yankee. I couldn't agree more that is where the majors are at. That is why my 600' sees plenty of action when and where I feel it is fitting. But I believe that at the end of Billy's season his 300' and or 450' will put more targets in the boat, esp since he has a paying clientele who are looking for numbers. I was going to stop over and say hello Sunday, but the few times I headed over that way you had people talking to you. And wanting to hear a couple of the speakers, I ran out of time. Beautiful king you had mounted on the table- Is that the one you took off the Oak?-Duane
  17. Tim, Great job by yourself, Joe, Curt and the others. We had a great time this weekend going to both events. Hope to do it again next year. I'm glad we left when we did. Ran into a couple of whiteouts on the way home-Duane
  18. Jolly, thanks for the link. That's as cheap as I have seen them. Just made the purchase for the X4-Duane
  19. One plus though to the 800LC is that if and when it happens, for most of the time it does or just a matter if time, is that the copper will need to be cut and spliced due to a kink or tangle. I have the shrink wrap as well on all my copper rods, but as Ugly mentioned, repeatability is more accurate with the LC now than the shrink wrap line that has been spliced. Also, the use of a LC with in liners would be more accurate if fishing 2 or 3 off the side of the boat. Say a 150-300 and a 450. The use of the LC would make this application somewhat easier. Billy- as Tim Bromund mentioned, you will be fishing the Oak So you won't be fishing as deep as in your old stomping grounds. Meaning for the most part the 800 LC would be adequate most of the times. Welcome to the Oak-Duane
  20. Raider, its ironic that you posted that site. I just received my package today from them, and ordered up some of the M501 purple frogs, amongst a few other favorites.. I look for them to be hot this year. Hopefully anyways- Duane
  21. Paul, very nice mounts on the fish. Beautiful paint job. I'm sure that I can throw a few targets your way. It will make it much easier knowing you will accept them at the Oak. Never knew that, but I guess I never asked either. Thanks for the followup.See you at the LOTSA event this weekend- Duane
  22. Tom, sent you a P.M.-Thanks -Duane
  23. Tom, you're killing us with that display Sounds like you have it pretty well covered. The old lady is not going to like hearing how must this weekend costs me. Just have to tell her the price of gas is thru the roof in N.Y.- How many of the 20# Sharks are you going to have on hand? -Duane
  24. Red, guess it was the way you worded it , when mentioned -enjoy what we have as many come from out of state. I took that as a dig towards the out of staters when worded that way. I think most on here at one time or another have done the same ( I know I have) when one puts up a thread and it didn't quite convey the way it should have and maybe offended someone. So if that was not your intent, accept my apologizes.- Thanks for clarifying-Duane
  25. Raider, I use a snap on any body bait such as Raps', Rogues, thundersticks etc.- I use a swivel on a spoon, whether it be right at the spoon itself such as a Sampo, or tie an inline swivel such as a Spro, then use a leader of flouro then you could use a snap at that application to avoid line twist. Just my way of doing things and has worked well for me thru the years. But yes, I agree that the use of a swivel esp. right at the body bait is and can be counterproductive.
