Hi Wes,......there is something about your best friend on board. My Wheaten ..... congratulations on your anniversary
-
I always called them silver bass. Catch alot of them in Oneida lake. The back of the gill plate is pretty nasty , just like a perch.

Here is a pic of a fish caught 100' on the dipsey line counter (33' + down) over 50' bottom. Like the others said, doesen't happen often at that depth but does happen. Hang in there. My best producer deeper than 50' is flies behind a dodger or flasher. All you have to do is get the first fish on a DF and you'll be sold on then. $$$$$$

...stopped to quick?

I guess I've been pretty lucky. I've been running my units in my driveway since the late 80's to set up the screens and get a idea how the unit worked after I installed them. Eagles, Garmins & Furuno's. They work just fine, never had a `ducer problem and it saved me a lot of time dinking around once I was on the water,.....but that is me. Tie a plastic bag full of water around your `ducer if that will make you feel better. My Furuno was on several times in the driveway to interface with two different autopilots and GPS's. I'm a little slow so the last thing I want to do is spend hours on the lake setting up a sonar.

Happy Birthday Z',...........see you Saturday >

Toad,...I have the same setup as you but took the paddle wheel off ( two screws) `cause I didn't need it. Like the others said, great unit and using it in auto mode works good. You can increase the gain even in auto. Play with that `till you start to see better fish returns and downrigger balls. Also the scroll speed is important . I sat in my driveway and set my unit up as far as the information on the display I wanted. ( yes it will work in air also, 2' off the blacktop will display about 4' to 5' bottom because sound travels slower in air) Take the book with you so you can fine the features you want while your fishing. I'll post a screen shot tonight when I get home. Hang in there. You'll like the unit. The top of the screen shows the various settings at the time of this picture. Your book will tell what each means. The speed indication is being picked up from my GPS.

Trolling Speed without Speed/Temp Sensor
stinger replied to overthelimit's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
...just to add another look and see to all that stuff above. Watch your rod action with a dodger on it. It is pretty easy to tell your speed ( proper lure action) by the pulse of the rod tip. Slow & lazy or fast and erratic. Match your spoons and plugs to what the rod tip is doing. I think a dodger is the most speed tolerant tool you can have. It works as slow as 1.5 up 3 mph, depending on what you drag behind it and what fish your after. A thumper rod is a good example. -
........especially after I cut threir heads off

Hi Rollie,.......I fished up the lake north of Long Point. Pretty lack luster for me. Ended up with a half dozen lakers and no silver fish. Plenty of fish up there but just couldn't get my program to kick in. I'll blame it on the moon phase

Well if you already have the bracket then use it and sinch up the kicker for the road.
-
I had one for awhile for my merc. 9.9. It works in a pinch but if you trailor you'll have to support the engine or it may not be there when you get home. I used a rachet strap to sure it up for the road trip. If you already have power trim on the kicker I would look into a fixed mount and play it safe.

I don't run copper ( at least not yet) but would like to know when another boat is. I've had my dipsey cut off by a guys rigger cable and know what it's like to loose some stuff I think a flag for copper is a good thing now that it is getting pretty popular. Quality Time starts deploying his copper while launching his boat so I'll always keep clear of him. Not sure about the rest of you.

Hi Kyle,............I fished a little farther north of you on the east side. Like you, the lakers were cooperating but couldn't get anything going in the upper water table . Nothing on plugs and one spoon fish off the rigger @ 50', ...everything else was dogger/fly, 240' on the dipsey and a couple @ 80' on the rigger. Surface temps were 43 deg.

All you have to do is put a common screw driver into the line guide pawl and spread the guide apart until the knot slides through. I had to do that with one of my 47's so a swivel could pass through.

I have 8 - 47's & 27's (20+ years). My clicker is always on so I usually have to replace one or two a season. The first time I had to replace a spring I ordered several so I didn't have to worry about a reel being down and waiting for springs. The were cheap enough to have spares. The spring change isn't a big deal at all. Google "Mike's Reel Repair " and check out the parts break down for your reels if you don't have one. There is also a toll free number if you want to talk to a person and see what other standby parts would be good to have.

Jack,......Mineral Spirits will cut pencil marks.

Those were caught in April (`05) and were typical 18"-20" Cayuga Lake fish at the time. Quality has improved since as many of you know. I took that picture in 2005 and have posted it a few times. ID'ing brown's & LL's seems to come up every year and a picture explains the difference a lot better when it's in front of you. Seems that once the fish get 21"+ they are a lot easier to distinguish.

Did my first trip Saturday out of Long Point. Was able to catch a few of those lakers you & 1dog' missed. It was a good day and my arms are't sore and no black & blue marks in my gut either.

The wonders of using copper: ....and you can look like this too after fishing with Ben a couple times.
