I’m not familiar with the Starcraft Sport transom but wouldn’t a kicker fit next to the main engine on the transom? If so then you won’t need a bracket. I would recommend that you get into the 9.9hp engine regardless of how you have to mount it. I don’t think the 9.9's are a overkill. They have 2 cylinders and will run a lot smother than those single cylinder 5's. Also you’ll always be able to use the 9.9 on any other boat from a 12'er up to those in the low 20'ers. Besides you have to think ahead for your next upgrade . Post a picture of your boat/transom if you have one. Maybe some of the other guys here have already set one up and can give you some ideas.

Mortigan,, I started a new topic on brackets
-
I started this thread because a board member showed some interest in mounting brackets on angled transoms during a kicker engine topic and I didn’t want to get off topic in that thread. Although there are several ways to skin the cat I chose to go this route. As you’ll see in the pictures below, the transom on my Arima is different than most boats out there. Adding a kicker can be a little more difficult than on most boat. The mount I have is a Electro-Hydraulic lift system. It’s built like a battleship. I’ve had it in service since September of 2007 and haven’t had any trouble with it and worth the money IMO. Even though it’s a solid unit I do support my kicker with a tie down strap when tailoring. The main engine has auto pilot and the kicker is tied into the main for steering while trolling using this connector rod > http://www.cabelas.com/boat-steering-au ... ds-1.shtml ...the kicker is electric start and I use a TrollMaster for throttle control. A big concern was extending the kicker to far back behind the boat and not being able to swing a downrigger behind the kicker. I use Big Jon electrics and with the 4' boom it does swing around the kicker while trolling. Another concern is getting the prop out of the water when the boat is on plane. I have a short shaft kicker and the prop is out of the water while on plane and is far enough in the water to troll with. A nice thing about this bracket is that it will stop at any position between full up and full down so trimming it up or down for sea conditions is possible and easy. This is the link to the bracket that is on my boat and it should give you all the info you’ll want and also contact info if needed. Besides the 2500-1 Bracket, I used the SAP-1 multi angle adaptor for the angle of the transom. http://www.jrmarineproducts.com/ These 3 views show the position of the kicker in relation to the hull. Remember, the up-down motion of the bracket is a infinite stop unit wherever you would like it positioned. Sorry, I don't have any pics with the downrigger on. Gator,......I was confronted with the same issue you have on my Arima. I solved the problem with a power mount and my BigJon with a 4' boom clears the rigger. I don't want to rob this thread so if you guys are interested let me know and I'll show you my setup on a new thread. What you want to do is do-able but be prepaired to spend some money

Doug I run a Merc 115HP 4 strokeEFI on my glass 19' Hard Top. Bought the whole works new in `02. Used it as my main and trolling motor `till 05 and then added a Merc 9.9 4 stroke kicker spring of `06. The 115 is pretty good on gas and also will troll all day at trout/salmon speed at about 800-900rpm. Idle speed is about 600 rpm and my boat would move at around 1.8 mph so for fishing eyes I bagged it to get to the 1.0 speed. Control with bags was slow to turn but it got the job done. The biggest problem I had using the 115hp engine as my trolling engine is that after several (3) seasons I started to get a flat spot in the throttle linkage around 800rpm from vibration on the cable at the bend by the transom. Fine tuning the engine for boat speed while fishing got to be a pain and I had to get the linkage changed. If I were to do it again I would look into electronic throttle control for the mains to eliminate as much mechanical control as possible. I put a TrolMaster on my kicker before it ever hit the water. If you decide to go with the twin 115's them ask your dealer if electric throttle is a option. If not then retro a TroMaster on them. You won’t be sorry. One more thing. You have to have two engines of some sort. If the main goes down then a paddle will not help. Also the best you’ll get out of kicker to motor back to the slip will be about 6-7mph. Boy it’s fun spending someone else’s money

I usually fish alone and the new three rod rule really hasn't helped me out. By using 3 rods I feel handicapped

Hi Doug....... Lets see, being a glass man my $.02 is have a look at these May-Craft glass boats. I've seen them at a dealer in Virginia and they make a real nice trolling boat. This one falls into the size (25'6) you are looking for and 3,600lbs dry weight is as light as a HewesCraft. http://www.may-craft.com/model_2550pilotxl.php Boy it's fun to spend someone elses money

I have the 620 because of a space issue. It works vary closely to the 585 except for the screen size and the 585 is a 1000w unit,..620 is 600w. You will not have problem showing the rigger balls if the transducer is aimed right. It has a great picture and detail on auto and even better detail on manual when you learn how to adjust the various settings. Not hard to learn, good instructional manual. I have the transom mount transducer and it will hold any bottom depth on Cayuga lake at 35mph and show heavy clusters of spiny flees when they emerge. What I can't show is fish when on plane. Maybe I just need to learn how to read. Go to Furuno's web site and down load the .pdf of the user manual and read thru it. You can't go wrong with either unit. Just added this pic: shows one rigger ball (only one deployed at the time of the pic). Nice bait ball and a few fish looking for a easy meal.

Thanks

Yankee, I usually us Berkley clear 12lb Big Game on the fingers before the fleas kick in. I don't have much experience with floro so what floro would you recommend and how long of a leader? Thanks

I never really knew much about the seaforellen brown trout but this thread got my interest up. For those that want a good read, here is a good article from 1989 in the New York Times that gives some history of the seaforellen brown trout and it's presents in NY State. http://www.nytimes.com/1989/08/20/sport ... all&src=pm Nice fish Irish' -
Ran across this in my email today. Thought that you guys would enjoy this video http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/hon ... news010612 Here is to another good year of fishing.....

....one can substitute any number of processes in that statement to try and get a rise out of some people,...like ...... waste water treatment plant in their backyard,......or slaughterhouse processing plant in their backyard,...and the list will go on if your looking for a argument. There are plenty of other forums besides LOU to beat the hydrofracking issue to death.

If you are looking for easy on-easy off then I think you would be better off using quick disconnect mounts if you want to take your downriggers off for trailering or just for security reasons. I have 4 Big Jon's with 6 quick mount positions on my boat so changing positions or just using the boat with/without riggers it’s a snap. I trailer my boat so the riggers are on only when I’m fishing. Picture shows setup for early spring fishing using 2 riggers for going down and 2 set in the planner(electric retrieve) position. You can see the unused mounts (black) for the outboard rigger position.

Just got this article from Boat US Magazine this morning. We've kicked this around a few times here but thought that some of you would like to read this. It's a short article but may clarifiy some of the discussion we already had here. http://www.boatus.com/magazine/2011/dec ... thanol.asp

I don’t want to get into a debate over this. I am pro- lets get the gas to market, but also want it done in as safe a manor as possible. There are always trade-offs in life and this is no different. Here is an interesting method of fracking that is virtually unheard of, at least in my area anyway. Why it doesn't get more press is beyond me. Maybe someone here can shed a little more light on this method of fracking. http://www.gasfrac.com/ ....just edited this post to add a link that will show a comparison of the fracking processes....> http://www.gasfrac.com/gasfrac_comparison.aspx

It's tough to lose your best buddy. Sorry to hear that that day has come for you Ray. He'll be hard to replace. It took me to many years to figure out that "man's best friend" really is his best friend. My pup will be a year old next month and had her first of many fishing trips last Sunday.

Don't feel bad, there are a few of us in the same boat . Right Kenny? It wasn't any better up the lake from you. I fished north & south of Long Point on the East side for 6 hours and did a dozen fish. It was pretty lack luster. Couple small lakers & salmon. A few decent rainbows & salmon. It seemed that the bigger fish came from 60' to 90' down although there were some smaller ones mixed in. The dinks all came from sliders so I stopped running them after awhile. Like you, the fleas were a irritation and the weeds were sporatic.

I think the numbers he is talking about are preceded by a $ sign

Maybe it was the mate to this? viewtopic.php?f=6&t=26879 Sorry couldn't help myself. Good story. Thanks for sharing.

Yes your right,... those Lakers DO fight, especially in the spring,...but the real truth about your hurtin' arms is that bodacious copper rig you keep bragging about You did real good Carolyn. You'll be making a lot of us jealous real soon with the progress your making.

Kidders Landing, west side a couple miles south of Sheldrake. Two places, O'Malley's and Kidders which are next to each other. We ate there Sunday. Good stop. PS: 11AM, forgot to mention that you'll be able to bring your dog to lunch also. We brought our dog up to O'Malley's and sat on the deck with her. There was another table that had 3 dogs also.

I was put on to Bar Keepers Friend years ago on a boating forum and can't thank the poster enough for the tip. I use the powder and just wet a sponge, sprinkle on some BKF and let it dissolve. Then just wipe it on the hull and let soak a few minutes ( don't let it dry) by the time you get down one side the stains are all but gone were you started. If a little stain is still left then I just wipe it gently with the spong and hose off. That's it. The stuff is amazing and to think of all the time I used to waste cleaning the stains off the water line. Save your time and elbow for a few beers. You can get it just about anywhere if you look for it, Target, Walmart, Grocery store..... http://www.barkeepersfriend.com/where-to-buy/New%20York
