we had 1 cancellation due to the weather in his area with lots of snow and power outages, and that person is looking to get rid of his ticket. If you're interested in picking it up from him, PM me and I'll give you the details on how to contact the person. First come, first served as they say. Tim

Hey Jeremy, that first pic ofthe waterfowl. Is that a brant? It's been years since I took the waterfowl ID class. I'm pretty sure it is in the goose family by the shape of the bill and it certainly isn't a canada or snow goose. Thanks, Tim

it means you'll most likley be happy with either of them. Those of us that have the Depth Raider couldn't be happier with it and those that have the Fish Hawk seem to feel the same. The same can be said for the Sub Troll as well, I might add. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them really, though with the history of cannon's previous attempt, you might want to let someone else be the guinea pig until the get the bugs worked out of the new one Tim

here is the press release: http://nysparks.state.ny.us/newsroom/pr ... aspx?r=776 February 19, 2010 Governor's Office: Marissa Shorenstein 518.474.8418 OPRHP: Eileen Larrabee, Dan Keefe 518.486.1868 Statements from Governor David A. Paterson and Commissioner Carol Ash on Parks Budget Cuts The Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) today put forward a recommended list of closures and service reductions in order to achieve its 2010-11 agency savings target and help address the State's historic fiscal difficulties. Governor David A. Paterson issued the following statement: "New York faces an historic fiscal crisis of unprecedented magnitude. It has demanded many difficult but necessary decisions to help ensure the fiscal integrity of our State. The unfortunate reality of closing an $8.2 billion deficit is that there is less money available for many worthy services and programs. In an environment when we have to cut funding to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and social services, no area of State spending, including parks and historic sites, could be exempt from reductions. We cannot mortgage our State's financial future through further gimmicks or avoidance behavior. Spending cuts, however difficult, are needed in order to put New York on the road to fiscal recovery. Going forward through the budget process, I look forward to a productive dialogue with the Legislature on parks and historic sites, as well as other issues." OPRHP Commissioner Carol Ash issued the following statement: "The 2010-11 Executive Budget included reductions to every area of State spending. As such, the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation has today put forward proposed closures and service reductions to meet its agency savings target. These actions were not recommended lightly, but they are necessary to address our State's extraordinary fiscal difficulties." ### A fact sheet on the proposed closures and service reductions is included below: The Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) today put forward a list of closures and service reductions in order to achieve its proposed 2010-11 agency savings target and help address the State's historic fiscal difficulties. As part of a comprehensive plan to close an $8.2 billion deficit, the 2010-11 Executive Budget included necessary cost reductions to each executive State agency, as well as cuts to education, health care, social services, and every other area of State spending. OPRHP's plan includes the closure of 41 parks and 14 historic sites, and service reductions at 23 parks and 1 historic site. The plan also assumes $4 million in park and historic site fee increases that will be identified at a later date, and the use of $5 million in funds from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) to finance OPRHP operations. These two actions were part of the 21-day amendments to the Executive Budget and are intended to reduce the number of parks and historic sites subject to closures and service reductions. Specific recommended closures and service reductions are detailed below: Long Island Brookhaven State Park (Suffolk)--Close Park Bethpage State Park (Suffolk)--Eliminate Winter Sports; Reduce picnic area and polo field Caleb Smith State Park Preserve (Suffolk)--Close Park Cold Spring Harbor State Park (Suffolk)--Close Park Connetquot River State Park (Suffolk)--Close Weekdays Heckscher State Park (Suffolk)--Close Swimming Pool Jones Beach State Park (Nassau)--Close West Swimming Pool; Eliminate July 4th fireworks Montauk Downs State Park (Suffolk)--Close Swimming Pool Nissequogue River State Park (Suffolk)--Close Park Orient Beach State Park (Suffolk)--Close Park Trail View State Park (Suffolk)--Close Park New York City Region Bayswater Point State Park (Queens)--Close Park Riverbank State Park (New York)--Reduce Operating Hours; Close Outdoor Swimming Pool; Eliminate Seniors Classes, and Community/Cultural Events Palisades Region Fort Montgomery Historic Site (Orange)--Close Historic Site Harriman SP– Anthony Wayne (Orange)--Close Park Area Harriman SP – Group Camps (Orange)--Reduce Maintenance High Tor State Park (Rockland)--Close Pool Knox Headquarters Historic Site (Orange)--Close Historic Site New Windsor Cantonment SHS (Orange)-- Close Historic Site Schunnemunk State Park (Orange)-- Close Park Stony Point State Historic Site (Orange)--Close Historic Site Tallman Mountain State Park (Rockland)--Close Pool Taconic Region Donald J. Just for the record, another very happy Scotty owner here. I've never heard of ANYONE, EVER having a drive belt break either. I was previously a cannon owner (old Mag 10A's) and they were fine, but slow. The Scottys are super fast, super reliable and are easily the fastest setting riggers you'll ever use. Tim

As much as I agree that this is a Democrat problem to a large extent, I think it is just as much an upstate vs downstate problem. Downstate, where the people are packed in like rats in a dumpster full of rotting meat, not a lot of them hunt/fish and they hold those of us out here in the hinterlands that do in contempt as backwards, semi-human barbarians and rednecks/rubes, not enlightened, urbane, classy city folk like them. As such, in their supreme arrogance, they decide that since these things aren't important to the big city, they aren't important and are best done away with. The problem in New York is that since those rats ARE packed into the dumpster of rotting meat that is Westchester County on out (downstate) that they have more than half the State's population and therfore, control State Government and can actually enact their myopic, provincial, elitist nonsense. In keeping with the original premise, since the downstate population is overwhelmingling liberal/democrat, I'm not sure this State's problem's are fixable short of somehow separating the 95% of the land mass that makes up the rest of NY State from the downstate SE Corner. Drift Bags
Tim Bromund replied to Epic Sportfishing's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I've had 2 Amish Outfitters 28" Beefy Bags for 4 years now and they'll slow my 24' Thompson almost to a dead stop at idle. Those bags are seriously well built. Tim -

No, that's the simple truth. sure you CAN install a separate mounting board, but most people don't, so that means drilling more holes in the transom in a location prone to leaks and resultant structural rot if not done properly. If that's bashing, then what do you call the constant whining about the complete and utter non issue that is the coated cable? I'm not obsessing, I'm just happy I replaced it with a superior unit and I'm not going back to that company. I'm done with this. Tim
-
Show me anywhere that I bashed the X4. You can't, because I didn't. Just because I disagree with you that it is indisputably the best unit out there doesn't mean I'm bashing it. I have and will continue to bash the heck out fo the 840 because it WAS a piece of crap. Tim

Brian, The Moor Subtroll was out there when I got the fish hawk, I know guys that have had Subtrolls since 1987. It's old technology, but it just flat out works. Depth Raider uses the same technology as the Moor and it also, just flat out works, every time. I use 1 battery a season and it has sent a solid, reliable signal as deep as I've ever had to run a rigger (160' last summer) In any case, like I said, I'll never know about the X4, I sold the old one and have no plans on ever going back. Tim
-
so I should be happy that my fish hawk was a piece of crap?
-
I'll second that. No coated cable to deal with. yeah, you've just got to drill 3 more holes in your transom below the waterline to mount another transducer. I'll take the coated cable, thanks. disclaimer: I had an old Fish Hawk 840 for years and it was such an unreliable, battery devouring piece of crap, I finally gave up on it and got the Depth Raider and I couldn't be happier with it. The X4 may be a fine unit, but I'll never know since my previous experiance left such a bad taste in my mouth I'll never own another fish hawl product. Tim

Go with the Depth Raider, it is awesome. Tim

When I was fishing the Olcott piers all the time back in the late 80's - mid 90's we used to catch american eels all the time at night while fishing for salmon in the fall. they loved egg sacks. Nasty, slimy buggers they were. Haven't seen one in years though. Tim

This seems a bit alarmist and premature IMO

salmonboy, need to clarify a couple points, First, the Province of Ontario stopped stocking salmon but that effort was taken over by private groups, Primarily the Metro East Anglers (MEA) and through totally volunteer efforts, the still collect, raise and stock the 500,000 plus kings that Ministry of Natural Resources used to. The yellow dots on mature kings are a natural collection of pigment, similar to a birthmark on humans. it is not an indication that that is a Canadian stocked fish. That is a popular myth that floats around every fall, and the opposite is said on the north shore, that those are NYS stocked fish. Pen rearing has been gong on since the late 90's on the NY side, more recently in some Canadian Ports. The Lower Niagara was part of a 4 year study between the River and Oak Orchard Creek where they fin clipped 3 separate lots of 40,000 kings each year, alternating the fin clipping between the two sites so they could track year classes for the study, Each site had 3 lots of 40K Salmon River Hatchery Direct Stocked Kings, Salmon River Hatchery Pen Reared Kings and Caledonia Hatchery Direct Stocked Kings. That study showed that at warm water tribs like the Oak, pen rearing saw a 4:1 return over direct stocking. At the Lower Niagara River, in that study, the salmon river direct stocked group showed the best returns, and pen rearing seemed to not be an advantage at that site, so for a number of years now, kings have not been pen reared in the Lower river, only steelhead. However, despite what that study seemed to sugggest, once they stopped pen rearing kings in the Lower River, we stopped seeing the large numbers of staging fish at the bar like we used to and the runs have been pretty weak in the river. Hopefully with the return of pen reared kings in the river, the fall runs will pick back up. Tim No doom and gloom, the summer king fishing has been out of this world for the past number of years. I don't forsee it changing any time soon. -
