  1. Actually, taking a closer look at it, the mouth isn't right, definitely not black. I actually think that might be a skip coho. Tim
  2. That is a rack and pinion steering system (the 4 bolts are attaching the cover plate to the rack). As thick as the cable is I find it hard to fathom, but I agree, sounds like the steering cable broke
  3. Hey, that skippie king has it's adipose.... wild fish Tim
  4. i would't run right out that far off shore this time of year , if you have temp in 150fow id start there and head north ,you'll probley hit em in the 150 too 250 fow . Fish out deep on Tuesday were coming out of temp. Fish were hitting in 60+ degree temps . I didn't look at any of the waters off Sandy between 35 and 350 fow because I knew the fish were gonna be active out deep so I just motored straight out, but it might be good to at least take a peek in the 70-150 area. Good luck Same thing last sunday out of Olcott. We were out at the 24-27 lines (4-7 miles out at Olcott) in 300+ fow and caught all of our fish (steelhead and teenage kings) in 65 deg water at 50 and 60 feet on the riggers. Tim
  5. I've been fishing the Olcott Pier's since the mid-late 80's and I've had some of my best nights on the west pier when waves were crashing over. Miserable fishing conditions, but really seems to get the fish moving and active as opposed to dead flat calm. Maybe different on the east pier, but NW winds were always killer nights for catching fish on the west pier. Calm SW wind nights the East Pier always seemed to to better, but I would guess that a NE wind would be good there as well. The problem with the East Pier is it is about 2 feet closer to the water line than the West Pier, so it becomes unfishable quicker once the seas start crashing over. Tim
  6. Rochester, at the mouth of the Genesee River. Tim
  7. FWIW, I've used the otters on other people's boats and prefer my Amish Outfitter redwood big boards by a wide margin. Tim
  8. what I thought was most interesting was the fact that he had a spare trailer tire sitting there on the bracket on the trailer. Tim
  9. Jim, make sure you eat lots of bananas. help the back heal Tim

  11. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Tim Bromund/FishStyx ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 9-20-09 Time on Water:0800-1300 Weather/Temp: sunny 70's Wind Speed/Direction:SE early, shifted to East and then NE as the day went on Waves: 2 footers when we quit Surface Temp: 70 Location: Olcott LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated:4 Species Breakdown: 2 kings. 2 steelhead Hot Lure: steelie stomper stinger, lazer spooked NK28 blue thunder Trolling Speed: 3.4-3.6 SOG Down Speed: 2.5-2.5 on Depth Raider Boat Depth: 375-430 Lure Depth: 50-60 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Dad and I started out the morning fishing for perch in the harbor by the boat. A few fish in there, but not in heavy yet, we got 4 or 5 fish. At 0800 we hopped in the boat and headed out. Nothing happening inside, so we pointed the boat North and started trolling offshore, found a nice pocket of active fish between the 24 line and the 26 line, ended up 4/6 with 2 nice teenage kings and 2 steelhead landed. Kings were around 12 and 14-15 lbs and one nice chunky steelhead around 6-7 lbs. Nice to catch silver kings this time of year. All rigger/spoon bite steelie stomper stinger took both kings on the 60' rigger and lazer spooked NK28 blue thunder took both steelies on the 50' rigger. Temps were crazy, we had 65deg down 50 feet and still 64 deg at 100 feet, the teenage kings were way up out of temp in the 65 deg water. The steelie had a right pectoral fin clip. I thought the only steelhead the DEC was fin clipping were the skamanias, but this fish was clearly not a skam, looked more like a domestic bow. Very, very lightly spotted. Dad with the 15 lb teenager The steelhead/bow East wind kicked up and made it a little snotty out there, but all in all, not a bad day for us, it sounded on the radio like most struggled out there today. 12. that looks about right. Here is a pic of my dad with at 14.5 lb brown from a couple years ago and yours looks significantly larger than that. Tim
  13. My cell is my only phone, and it is provided by my employer. Heck, my house doesn't even physically have a phone line running to it. Tim
  14. Ok, sorry, I've never seen those before. And I thought I owned at least a dozen of every spoon ever created Tim
  15. If the internal image posting isn't working, you can upload it to a free pic hosing site like photobucket and then post the image links from there into your message. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=912 Tim
  16. Ray, those are triploid bows up there, hence.... sterile. I don't know if those pond raised, sterile fish should be eligible for record consideration. They should at the very least be asterisked. Tim
  17. not that knot, at least not that anyone has ever experienced and there's a ton of us running it. Crimps absolutely DO create weak spots though IMO. Tim
  18. There's a fairly prevalent attitude on Lake Michigan to kill every salmon they catch to try and get the alewife numbers up in that lake. Don't forget that with 4 different states bordering and stocking Lake M, they get a hell of a lot more fish stocked every year than Lake O does, pluse a fair amount of natural repro to boot. Lots of Lake Michigan guys sig lines on GLA saying "save an alewife, kill a salmon". It wasn't all that long ago that a typical mature 4yo king in Lake Michigan was a 12-15 lb fish (guys on the GLA board regularly refer to a 12 lb king as a "nice one" or a "big king"), and now for the first time in almost a decade, they've seen decent numbers of 20 lbers and even a few 30 lbers this year, so maybe it's working. Those racks of fish are probably primarily 3 YO 8 lbers, which would be 18-20 lb fish on Lake O. Not saying I agree with the attitude, but who knows, maybe lots of harvest is what THAT lakes needs to thrive in the current environmental conditions. Coorection, looking at the pics again, at least the top ones from May, those are mosly cohos, the spring coho action in southern Lake Mi is just crazy from what I understand. Tim
  19. seriously, Ordinarily I would suggest you hold off until you have saved up some more money to buy a better unit. $250 doesn't buy much. However, that being said, it looks like Bethel Marine still has some of the Raymarine DS500X's available for $260.00. These are a discontinued model factory closeout, new in the box with full factory warranty. Nice unit, color, dual freq transducer and 500 watts RMS power (very important). I think they went for around $600.00 when they were still in production. I bought the DS600X from there this spring which is basically the same unit with a bigger screen for $325.00 very nice unit, but those are all gone. I think you'd still be happy with the DS500X. http://www.bethel-marine.com/html/specials.html Tim
  20. I would agree with what many are saying on here, don't get discouraged, sometimes it just happens. I've been at this game for quite a while now and I still remember one utterly miserable day during the fall LOC in 2002. we dropped the boat in at 6:30 am and finally put it back on the trailer at 9:30 pm, logged 97 miles on the graph's trip meter and never moved a rod all day, not even a false release. Right at dusk the screen absolutely lit up with bait and hooks but we still couldn't buy a bite. Those days suck, but everyone has them occasionally. I also agree with rustyrat, 2.8 downspeed is WAY too fast for salmon, especially this time of year. That's a good steelhead speed, but you wont see many salmon bites burning along that fast. I'm usually 1.8-2.2 for kings most of the year. Bear in mind that that is with a Depth Raider, which I understand pretty consistently reads slower than the X4 at the same actual speed, so it may not be as bad as it seems, but I would suggest slowing down to 2.5 MAX on the X4 and see what happens. Don't be afraid to slow right down and keep your lures slowly waving in front of their faces as long as possible this time of year. They're really not eating any more at this point so you have to aggravate them into striking. Tim
  21. so Rick, why won't you get to see yours? Was it a charter client's fish? Tim
  22. Could you please be a little bit LESS specific Tim
  23. stern drive and outdrive are the same thing. The problem with kickers and autopilots is if you have the kicker connected to the outdrive with and EZ Steer or something like that without the main engine running, the AP will have to work too hard to steer without the power assist and you'll burn up the autopilot motor. you might want to check into the Garmin Autopilot (TR-1 Gold ) which has both speed and steering control and is specifically made for kickers and from what I understand, doesn't work off the main motor. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID ... featureTab a little pricy, but I've heard nothing but glowing reports about them.
