Interesting article. This is the first in a series of articles about the history and future of alewife in the Great Lakes and the debate between fisheries managers on how to address them , the salmon fishery and native species. It gives some insight into the thinking of those that would like to see salmon and alewifes go away in favor of native species. http://greatlakesecho.org/2009/09/02/al ... 2%80%98em/ Tim

I've always had good luck with the metallic purple also, particularly for steelies, otherwise I always have a kelly green on the starboard side and a clear on the port side, just so I don't mess up and put em out backwards (what a mess ) Kings have always likes a kelly green diver. Tim

Just FYI, the GMT40 isn't made anymore, hasn't been for a while now. If you find one, it'll be used. I second Hank on the Depth Raider, can't go wrong with that unit. Tim

Dad and I went out to do some derby fishing saturday morning. We stayed inside figuring we'd try and put a brown on the board and maybe pick up some staging kings as well. We had decent temps inside, 48 deg down 60, ended up 5/6 before the storm cell rolled through and chased us off the lake. 2 steelhead, 1 dink and 1 about 6 lbs, (both released) 2 mature kings at 20 and 23.5 lbs and 1 small brown about 3-4 lbs. Both steelhead and one of the mature king came on an NBK SD and mirage atommik on the wire diver, 160 back on a 2, and the other mature king and the brown came on a Net Pen SD and fly combo on the 60' rigger. also had 1 hit and quick release on a Mountain De SD and green crinkle howie on the 70' rigger. All action came between 150 and 200 fow in front of the microwave (approx 22.5N and 41W) Tim

Howie, I responded with this same message to your PM, but since it sounds like there is a bit of general confusion out there, I'm reposting it here in the general forum as well: When you hear people talking in coordinates like that, they are looking at the 2nd set of lat or lon numbers (minutes). For example. Olcott Harbor is at 43 deg 20 min and 210 seconds (or thereabouts) North Latitude. In our part of the world, each minute of latitude is approximately 1 mile apart, so from Olcott, the 25N line is approximately 5 miles offshore, 27 line is 7 miles offshore, 30 line is 10 miles out and so on. Minutes of longitude are approx .75 miles apart. Olcott is at 78 deg 42 min and 540 sec West Longitude, Wilson, six miles to the west, is 78 deg 50 min 09 sec West Longitude. So basically if you hear someone on the radio say they are at the 25 and 46 lines, you know they are approximately 5 miles north and 3 miles west of Olcott. Another example: the 27 and 52 lines would be 7 miles out and a little over a mile west of Wilson. That would be from Olcott's perspective anyways. Wilson is at the 19N line so in real distance, the 27 line is actually approx 8 miles offshore at Wilson. Hopefully that made sense to you. Please let me know if you need further clarification or if I just managed to confuse you more Tim

Chris, Personally, I wouldn't go above the lip/edge of the spool. Seems like that wouild be asking for trouble to me. One loose coil of wire gets between the spool and the reel body and gets wrapped up in there, and that reel is out of commision until take it apart and get that mess unwrapped. Tim

Chris I don't know about the 19 strand, never used it so I can't really comment on that, but 1000' of 30 lb Malin or Mason wire fills the spool perfectly on a 47 (I use Malin). Tim

Dad, Adam and I attempted to fish the Fairhaven Challenge today, but since we had done so lousy fishing out there the past 3 years in unfamiliar water, we decided to fish it out of Olcott. We figured we had til 11:00 to put a box together so that we could get the boat back in the slip and closed up in time to hit the road by noon to make the 3:00 weigh in deadline. Started inside in 50 fow in front of the red barn and saw a great picture on the graph. Dropped lines as soon as the GPS showed 6:00 am (tournament start time) and made a couple passes N-S out to 150 and back, after an hour and a half of not moving a rod, based on the good offshore reports we've seen lately, we pulled lines and ran out the the 25 line and set up again trolling North. Made it as far as the 30 line and turned around, very few bites on the north troll, more action on the south troll but we couldn't hang on to anything today ended up 3/12 with 2 decent (8-10 lb steelies in the box and 1 dink steelie that was released). No kings for us today. A couple bites on cut bait, including one of the nice steelies, but other than that, all a spoon bite, flashers and flies were very quiet today for us. R&R's and NK's got the bites. Temps were great, we had 48 deg down 50. Obviously we didn't bother making the 2 1/2 hr run to Fairhaven for the the weigh in Looking at some other reports and from some of the chatter we heard on the radio, looks like we should have stuck it out inside. We sucked today, oh well, that's fishing Tim

I don't know about that momay, I have 3 SG47LCA's and 1000 feet of wire fill all 3 of them right to the top of the spool with no backing. Half way, that doesn't sound right?????? Are you using 20 lb or 30 lb? Tim

Rich, isn't the screen on a 500 a little small to split? I tried that with my 600 and you could barely see anything on either side with is split. Tim

I agree, fleas 2 weeks ago were brutal, last week they were barely noticeable. I think the "whale snot" fish hook flea season is just about over for the summer. Tim

We agree on many levels Tim, it will continue as you upgrade your equipment. It took me 3 trys to find the right rigger & you are still searching for and in denial about the right temp speed unit!!! CC Not at all Carl. I had the inferior unit previously and then I ash-canned that one and got a Depth Raider. All is right with the world now!!! Tim -
I didn't say it IS awesome, I said it has been, which is nothing but the truth... you silly superstitious fisherman you Tim ps you gonna make it to the meeting tonight?
