I know, fishing has been pretty freaking awesome in the Olcott-Wilson area though Tim

We're entered, but after the past couple years of doing crappy in the Challenge fishing unfamiliar water out of FH (especially last year when the fishing absolutely sucked), we're fishing it out of Olcott. If we get a good box put together, we'll drive it down to the weigh in, just like the guys bringing in the heavy boxes from Oswego or Mexico always do. Tim

It's a mile and a half or 2 west of Olcott, between Olcott and Wilson, you can't miss it from the water, big red barn with a white roof near the shore. Tim -
as long as ther are no kinks, don't worry about it. Tim

Ok, could have been someone calling you, in fact, I think it was. I was at the back of the boat and heard someone calling for K-Gone. Tim -
Cell phone Service Which one do you use and why?
Tim Bromund replied to Erbyjoe's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Verizon...because my employer provides the phone. They also seem to have the best coverage. We were with verizon years a go, switched to Nextel, which sucked and switched back to verizon as soon as possible after our Nextel contact was up. Tim -
best downriggers
Tim Bromund replied to lake patrol's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Kind of a ford/chevy/dodge thing. I had Cannons for years, they were fine riggers. Switched to Scottys and never looked back. You can take my Scottys when you pry them from my cold, dead hands ........ I mean transom Tim -

KGone I heard you on the radio on Saturday, but I had it on scan and didn't catch what channel you were on or I would have called you. I'm guessing you were on 68? I'll be out Saturday again as well. I'm usually parked on Channel 10, too much mindless chatter on 68 for my taste. Tim -

Rodmaster II rodholders on Scottys
Tim Bromund replied to landingzone's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I've been using them for a while, I replaced 1 of the standard fixed rod holders on each of my 1116's with the scotty ones (not those Rodmaster II's but the same concept) the stock rod holders were my 1 complaint about the scotty riggers, I Like my rigger rods almost parallel to the water and these allow me to do that Tim -
fished 6:00-noon. Had a friend of my cousin from Ohio on board with us today. He and his father and son had been up in their boat since tuesday and were really struggling, (1 fish, 2 fish per day), so Wayne came out with us to try and see what they were doing wrong and the other two decided to try it again in their boat. Overall pretty slow out of Olcott today. We went 6/9 and it sounded back in port that we did significantly better than most. 5 kings and a small laker landed. Other than 1 hit and run on an NBK stingray 100 back on a 2 on a wire diver, everything else came deep. We had 48 deg down 80. 1 clipped shaker (1yo) on a gator ss on a 65' rigger, other than that it was all flashers and flys, NBK SD with Atommik Mirage fly on the 400' copper went twice, chrome silver prism protroll with no see um action fly back 240 on a 2 on a wire diver went once. chrome/green SD with mirage atommik and mountain dew SD with green crinkle howie on the riggers each went twice at 80 and 90 feet. Nothing huge today but we had a couple nice teenagers and one mature king around 16-17 lbs. Action all came in 120-160 fow between the red barn and Wilson. The other boat shadowed us all day, but struggled again, only had 1 steelhead as their only bite, but hopefully Wayne got an idea what to do differently in future trips. Tim

well.... I suppose that's better than a new battery every trip like with the old fishhawks. Tim

Olcott 8-3-09 evening

Well, it sort of depends on the weather, if it's cloudy and obscuring the moon then it's business as usual. Since salmon are primarily sight feeders, if the sky is clear and the big full moon is glowing, the will feed all night, so come daybreak, the fish are well fed and there isn't much of a first light bite. Usually what that means is you can sleep in a little, because, they'll start getting hungy again late morning and there is a good mid day bite. I've read over on the GLA website about guys doing very well fishing at night on a full moon on Lake Michigan, but I've never done it myself. Tim -
I took my boss, one of our clients and a co-worker out after work for a couple hours, got a later start than I had hoped for due to an accident on the thruway having traffic at a crawl. We fished from 7:00-9:30, worked the inside to mid waters from 70-170 fow between the red barn and the microwave. Pretty slow, we had 1 flurry of activity right at dusk in front of the microwave in 70-80 fow going 3/4 in a period of about 1/2 hour and that was it, including 1 double header. 3 bites on the 50' rigger, 2 on the R & R Spook on the main line and 1 on the nbk SS on the slider, landing 2 of em, both shaker kings (both clipped). One nice 18-20 lb mature on the green double crush glow opti inticer and green crinkle atommik 70 down on the probe rigger. The screen absolutely lit up with bait and fish right at dusk in 70 fow but we couldn't get many of them to go. Beautiful night on the water. Looks like the moon is just about full, so if the sky is clear, I wouldn't expect much of a morning bite for the next several days. Tim

On Thursday August 13th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Lake Ontario fishing seminar by Captain Pat Comerford (Sandman) on the tricks to catching large Kings on Flashers and Flies. Pat and his partner Greg Wiacek have effectively used Flashers and Flies for many years to catch large Lake Ontario Kings and place high in many tournaments. Pat and Greg will share their experience with audience and facilitate an extended Q&A session. The audience is encouraged to bring their favorite Flasher/Fly combinations and share during this session. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The seminar will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The seminar is open to the public with no admission charge. See LOTSA.ORG for any questions.

Hi Howie, the LOTSA guys usually all talk on channel 10 so that's where my radio was parked. Usually to much nonsense chatter for me to listen to 68, I even took both that one and 72 (all Canadian rag boaters on that one) out of my radio's scan. Tim -
We normally release the majority of our fish, though we do keep some. In my report from yesterday, we boxed our 9 simply because this was likley the only time my buddy and his son that I took out will get out this year and they wanted some fish for the smoker/grill/freezer ect. I honestly don't know what anyone could possibly do with it all if they filled the box with these fish every time they went out. Especially those of us that are out almost every weekend. Tim

Garry, Thanks. Right now, I don't think we're doing the challenge this year. Tim -
I had my friend John and his son Joe out with me today out of Olcott. we had a good day. Set down in 50 FOW and immediately had a great picture so we started trolling North west and setting lines. Trolled all the way out to 270 and took 1 nice steelhead on a slider on the 50 foot rigger, ss nbk. At 270 we turned back in and started trolling SW back towards the red barn. Shortly after completing the turn, nice mature on a stingray NBK on the wire diver, 100 back on a 2. Ended up working a N and S troll all day ending up a little East of the Microwave. We ended up with 14 or 15 fish landed of 20 bites. Boxed a mix of mature and teenage kings, some nice coho in the 7-8 lb range and a couple steelies. Released a number of other steelhead. John's son Joe got his first 20+ lb king today. Early on, the NBK spoons were on fire, but they dried up fairly quickly. As the sun came up, flashers and flies started taking over mountain dew SD with green crinkle howie took 6 hits on the probe rigger down 70. Wire diver back 160 with various flashers took a number of hits and the 400 foot copper took hits both with a green 8" hot spot flasher and green crinkle fly and green double crush glow SD and Atommik T86 Packer Fly. Pretty much anything green got bit today, NK28 watermelon took multiple hits on the rigger at 50 and 40 feet. here's a few pics John with the first mature, 22 lbs Joe with his 20.5 lb king we had a hitchhiker for a while today Today's box Tim

At the present time they are only adipose clipping kings in Lake Ontario. The other species may be clipped down the line, but for right now it is kings only. Tim

I had Danny Letcher from the Newfane Marina out with me on Friday for the LOTSA Club Tournament pre-fish tourny. Wes Walker from the Slippery Sinker was also supposed to come along but he had some business issues and had to pass. Day started off a little rough with 2-3's but laid down flat as the day went on. We had a decent day, actionwise, boating 2 matures that we weighed in for the tourny, 1 just under 22 lbs the other around 17, other than that it was shaker central. Saw a mix of both clipped and smaller (wild) unclipped shakers), 13 fish total for the day. Almost entirely a rigger bite on friday. Green double glow opti inticer and green krinkle atommik took both matures 70 down on the probe rigger. Spoons took most fish. NBK stingray was on the other rigger set at 80 ft with an NBK Dreamweaver SS as a slider and both took fish regularly. 200' copper took 1 fish with a dalmation R&R. Saturday, the LOTSA Tourny postponed due to the big waves and the fact that we have some pretty small boats in the club, but but Adam, Zech and I went fishing anyways. went 5/6 with 2 skips and 3 matures landed. we dropped a 30 lb class king 30 feet behind the boat and landed 1 that went 24lb 8 oz on the LOC derby scale (20th place at the time was 24lb 9 oz, so we fell just short) and also took kings at approx 17 and 20 lbs (released). All matures came on either a wire diver 240 back on a 2 or probe rigger 70 down, white/white (double crush glow) spin doctor with glow wonderbread atommik on both rigs. Unpleaseant fishing in the 3-5 footers. The LOTSA tournament was a go on Sunday, we got out early and found residual 1-2s from the night before, but set up in 50 fow off the microwave and saw a great picture of bait and hooks, but couldn't get em to go, the NW on saturday pushed temps deep, we had 66 deg on bottom in 50 fow so we turned NE and started trolling out as we headed north we started popping fish regularly taking a 15 lb king on the same white/white glow wonderbread combo on the probe rigger, 120 ft of cable out to get 43 deg, and then a 20 lb king on the same combo, with some shakers mixed in. After a while we started popping steelhead like crazy and I looked over at the graph and saw we had gotten out to 420 fow in front of the powerplant so we turned around and trolled back in, finally stopped hitting steelies inside 275 fow. Some nice solid steelies out there, nothing over 10 but we had 4 or 5 in the 7-9 lb class. (all released). NBK stingray was on fire on the wire diver 205 bakc and the good old classinf black and purple NK28 down 68 on the 2nd rigger took a bunch of hits as well. We finished up the day with a small brown trout on a silver green prism pro troll and TG Hammer atommik 240 back on a wire diver in 170 fow (what the heck was she doing out there) and then another 20 lb king just before 12:00 on an nkb stingray 100 back on the other wire diver. 24/24 fish in the boat on sunday. Somehow we managed to not drop a single fish that we hooked. Another rough day with the lake building to the same 3-5's we had on saturday. I still feel like someone has been beating me with a club after 3 days straight of fishing in that rough water, but overall a really nice weekend of fishing. The LOTSA picnic on Saturday was great. We filleted all the fish from the friday pre fish tourny and cooked em as part of the picnic on saturday, the blackened salmon was a great addition to the vittles this year. Tim
