Tim Bromund : Fishing Report ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 6-14-09 Time on Water: 7:30 am - 2:30 pm Temp/Weather: 70's and sunny Wind Speed/Direction: SW less than 10 Waves: less than 1 foot Surface Temp: 63 deg Location: Olcott to Wilson LAT/LONG: =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 9 Total Boated: 5 Species Breakdown: 4 steelhead, 1 coho Hot Lure: NBK in both standard stinger size and DW super slim Trolling Speed: 2.5-2.8 SOG on GPS Down Speed: 2.0-2.3 on Depth Raider Boat Depth: 40-220 fow Lure Depth: 20-50 feet ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Finally got the boat in the water. Set up in front of the red barn and ended up as far west as Wilson. Started out real slow in the morning, lots of bait and hooks, but no takers (it is June after all) mid morning we started getting some bites. only 1 bite on the riggers, mostly a diver bite for us today, ended up 5/9, landing 4 steelhead and 1 coho All spoons, green mostly, NBK in both standard stinger and DW super slim took the most bites. 1 bite on a laser spook on a 5 color core. bites came in 70-150 fow on a N-S Troll. Tons of bait and hooks in 40-60 fow but couldn't move any of them. Lots of big red bait mountains in there, some were so dense that the new Raymarine fishfinder started registering the top of the bait cloud as bottom (may have to play with the gain settings ) All in all, fairly satisfied with the results of a June shaketown and 1st trip of 2009.

Why the 9 fish limit in the amat Pro AM?
Tim Bromund replied to TOP SECRET's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Nick, it always used to be 9 fish. They lowered it to 6 fish 2 years ago in an effort to give 2 man teams a chance to compete and increase small boat participation, but that change was met with constant, non stop whining and complaining by many of the long time AM competitors, so this year they changed it back to 9 fish and created the Open Division to try and accommodate the small boat, small team guys and give them some place to compete. I never realized Ray was a Vampire Slayer... Pretty impressive!! Tim

Remember High School Science Class? The Colors of the Spectrum ROY G BIV Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet and of course, Black and Glow way down deep That's pretty much how it goes as you get deeper in the water column, Red has the shortest wavelength and will be filtered out first (or is it the longest, damn, HS was a long time ago) Anyways Red filters out and just looks black at the most shallow depths and each color filters out progressively deeper, so for instance purple is visible at much greater depths than orange. That is proabaly why reds and oranges make such good coho and steelhead baits, I don't know if it is so much that they really like those colors better or it's just that those colors are still really visible at the shallower depths those fish prefer. Maverick's box was 251 and change. Here's a pic of the final board for the Big Boys, sorry for the crappy quality, stupid phone cameras suck. I was the observer on Cinelli's boat. We headed west looking for temp and had to run all the way to the red can to get into river water to get temp, those stupid east winds blew all water away. We actually limited in an hour and 10 minutes, 1 nice king and the rest cohos. it was bedlam out there. At 10 fish they tried to get their lines out of the water and go searching for kings for weight and couldn't get em out fast enough. Fish 11 and 12 were cohos that hit tripped divers skipping along the surface. Never seen anything like it. They were done at 7:40 in the morning. Congrats to Maverick, I was helping Bill Hilts out afterwards at the weigh in and was doing the cooler pre-check, that was one heck of a box they brought in. Congrats also to Vince with his 2nd place finish in the Big Boys following up his (yet another) win at the pro am the day before. Tim

No, not the comeback award, they had a goose egg award for team "still no sponsor", maybe for blanking on day 1 and still fishing day 2??? They announced it after you had left sunday afternoon, Hilts was asking if you were still around. I'm sure they'll be contacting you eventually or just sending you a check or something. Tim

Cable steer Autopilot report {simrad AP14r}
Tim Bromund replied to Fishstix's topic in This Old Boat
John, the simrad replaces the existing helm in it's entirety. The rack goes away. That's why you have to replace the steering cable if it is currently a rack and pinion. The simrad is based on a rotary steering helm so you need a rotary steering cable. Tim -
Thanks guys, much appreciated Tim

Cable steer Autopilot report {simrad AP14r}
Tim Bromund replied to Fishstix's topic in This Old Boat
I disagree, the heading shown on the AP14 display is NOT the GPS heading it is the compass heading directly off the fluxgate compass from the AP itself. It also has some addidional features like gain adjustments displayed on screen. Personally, I think it is worth the extra couple hundred scoots for the AP14. YMMV Tim -
Keep in mind that if the floor is soft, it's probably pretty likely that the stringers and transom are or may be soft/rotted as well and this might turn into a much larger job than anticipated. Ask me how I know Tim

Ray, are you projecting that strong of a finish in this coming weekends Niagara Pro Am? you're a member, come on down and give us your pearls of wisdom. Tim

Coated cable, how to use and not lose probe
Tim Bromund replied to jer9580's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Carl, you keep bringing up the removable prove as though it's different from the others. They are all removable, see the picture on page 1 of the modified Klincher. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the complaints about the coated cable are just so much marketing BS. No offense, but I'd rather have coated cable than drill more holes in my transom to mount another transducer. Tim -
I have mine on Daiwa Heartlands. As with every other application, you just can't beat em for the price. Tim

Sodus 5/30/09
Tim Bromund replied to rdebadts's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I believe fins will regenerate to some extent. That is one of the problems with most body fin clipping programs, if you don't get the entire fin removed, it regrows. Tim -
I know it is going on for the Niagara Pro Am, no idea about any of the others. Tim

Now that the bottom work is done, I was up putting everything on the boat yesterday and when I hooked up the Gamin 172C Chartplotter, it started acting strange. It powered up fine and acquired the satellites right away, but after 45 seconds to a minute it just shut down. It did this 6 or 7 times in a row before I stopped playing with it. Anyone else ever have this happen with a Garmin or have any ideas what might be causing it? I've had the unit for 3 or 4 years without any issues at all. Thanks, Tim p.s. when I checked the battery voltage on the Garmin, it was showing 11.2, but everything else, the blower, the outdrive tilt and trim, etc., all functioned and sounded normal like they always do with a full battery charge. It may have been from a low battery, but I don't think so.

IMO, First week in august, you're just as likely, if not more likely to have better fishing in Wilson/Olcott/Oak Orchard/Rochester on the west side than you will in the far east ports. My home port is Olcott and in a normal weather year (last year was an exception with lots of strange winds) we have super king action all summer long, usually in 60-150 fow. good luck wherever you end up. Shouldn't that respect go both ways? I mean, if they come roaring up like a bunch of d!ck swinging tools, I'd probably have a hard time being especially polite. Tim
