  1. Technically, my Mercruiser owners manual says at least 88 octane, but that effectively means 89 since 88 isn't available anywhere. That is probably why the marina carries 89. Erin, Jim was supposed to put it back on the trailer on Monday (for some reason he didn't want to try it in the 30+ mph winds on sunday) I'll most likely get everything back on it and drop it in the slip this weekend. Tim
  2. Guys, got some good news from Dawn at the Town of Newfane Marina yesterday. She told me that she confirmed with her supplier that for this full boating season at least, the Gas Dock at the Newfane Marina in Olcott will NOT have Ethanol, it will be straight 89 Octane gasoline. Tim
  3. Yeah GOawayYANKMEES Tim
  4. Brian, do you think it is the LMS 350 head or the GPS receiver antenna that stopped working? If it is the GPS receiver (puck), I have one for the LMS 350 sitting in a box in my basement that you are welcome to try out. Tim
  5. John, I think Kell Labs claims the Depth Raider will work down to 200'. I had it down 140-150 several times last summer and it worked flawlessly. I don't really care to run a rigger deeper than that, though I did pick up a 15' shark over the winter, so I might have to play with it this summer and see how far down I can go and still get a signal. Tim
  6. John, actually my post below yours was a line by line response to some of Carl's points that are quite honestly IMO, inaccurate or downright incorrect, but after reading it back after posting, they came off to me as being fairly antagonistic, which was not my intent. Since I couldn't delete the post outright, I deleted all of the content. It's all good. I had a fish hawk for 10 years and was never really happy with the reliability or performance, so after losing yet another probe several years ago, I scrapped it and bought a Depth Raider, which was IMO, a much superior unit in every way to one I had just removed. The coated cable is absolutely no big deal, it has an easy to see, rock solid and stable digital display, I remove the probe at the end of every trip, Having had it for 10 years I see absolutely no benefit to the surface speed and temp, my lures arent running there and if I really want to know, it's on my graph. I put a battery in the probe at the start of the season in May and take the same battery out at the end of the season in October. There's no antenna with the fish hawk, but you have to drill 3 more holes in your transom to mount another transducer. To each his own, but having owned both, I just don't see the indisputable superiority of the FH. Even if the X4 is everything it's cracked up to be, it's still quite a bit more expensive than the others on the market. Can't we all just get along Tim
  7. Carl, with all due respect, that statement is just ludicrous. The old fishhawk was a piece of crap compared to ALL the other down temp units on the market. I don't miss mine one bit, the Depth Raider and Subtroll are both vastly superior to the old 840. I haven't used the new one, but quite honestly, I really don't see the superiority you keep speaking about. Tim
  8. www.amishoutfitters.com Either the buggy bags or the beefy bags. I have 2 of the 28" beefy bags on my 24' Thompson and with both in the water, they'll slow me almost to a dead stop. That size should be plenty for you as well. Those bags are super heavy duty and will last forever. Tim
  9. Sorry Pete, Missed this post. From what I remember, I don't know that you can really say that they fared "better" in those years, but I belive it was kind of determined that stocking numbers had less of an impact on fishing quality than was originally thought. In the early 90's after NYS cut king stocking from 3.5+ million a year to 1.2 million, in a number of years, the hatchery returns of jacks were equal to or better than they were at the hight stocking levels. The DEC uses jack returns to the hatchery (males that mature as 1 year fish, 3-4 lb mature kings) as a gauge of how strong that particular year class of fish (how they survived to recruit to the fishery) might be. That seemed to indicate that higher stocking levels without the biomass to feed em, simply resulted in higher mortality. It will be interesting to see how last spring's reduced stocking affects fishing quality, especially since the low water that caused the poor returns to the hatchery, also caused very low numbers of wild kings produced in the salmon river in the spring of 08. Tim
  10. rd you must have gotten a bad batch. All I ever use is Big Game and Trilene XT (other than seguar flouro for leaders) and I can't remember the last time I've ever had a break off. Tim
  11. You can't go wrong with either, both are super stable and super reliable. The only real difference between the two units is one has a digital display and the other has a big analog dial display, so it really boils down to personal preference. I own a depth raider but I have been on multiple boats with the subtroll and they are both equally nice. Tim
  12. Secret weapon. I'd tell ya but then I'd have to kill ya. That's his knuten valve regulator control wire. Tim
  13. what you saw was most likely a bowfin Tim
  14. Clarke, did you happen to notice if any of them were missing the adipose fin (small fleshy fin behind the dorsal). THose are what the fish marking trailer are clipping (as of last year, so stocked in 2008), so any dinks/shakers we catch from here on out that have the adipose missing are stocked and any that still have that fin should be wild/naturally reporduced fish. Just curious. Tim
  15. LZ, have you tried putting 2 next to each other (inline) on the cable? Tim
  16. John, I've asked Dawn at the Marina and she said that unless they also don't indicate the ethanol on the documentation she gets from her supplier, the Gas Dock at Olcott is NOT E10. We'll see how long that holds true. I know she doesn't want it as long as she can get real gas. Tim
  17. What was your GPS speed over ground? If you were trolling in a wicked subsurface current, you very well may have been hauling to get 2.5 downspeed. These units are pretty accurate. IMO, the actual speed is less important than figuring out what displayed speed catches fish on your boat. Repeatability is the key. As long as it is repeatable, if you start slamming fish at 2.3 on the DR, does it really matter if that is actually 2.4 or 2.5? As long as you can duplicate what is working, you're golden. Tim
  18. It's wierd, I have no problem at home, but here at the office IE doesn't work, other than using Brian's work around. Firefox works ok both places for me. Tim
  19. Absolutely, don't know how I ever lived without mine. Tim
  20. I've got 2 wire divers rods on daiwa heartlands with twilli tips that are 7 or 8 years old with no wear issues. Wire on the reels is currently 4 years old, prolly should change it, but haven't had any break offs, so I'm gonna see what this season brings. Tim
  21. Not to mention the 300 boat pack that congregates off the bar for the LOC. Glad I fish out of Olcott Tim
  22. Hey Kevin, Congrats on the 3rd place finish at St Catharines over the weekend. Nice!!! Tim
  23. Stan, you must have accidentally clicked on the " I'm under the age of 13" box when you registered for the forum. either that or their board is screwed up. Tim
