Is this the biggest monster of Lake Ontario?
Tim Bromund replied to Pike Hunter's topic in Fishing Pictures
stan, we have lake sturgeon and shortnose sturgeon out this way. Not sure on the size of the shortnose, but the lake sturgeon typically max out at 7-8 feet and in the high 200 lbs range. My biggest so far was a 5+ foot and 60 lbs or so lake sturgeon on a night crawler while walleye fishing on the Menominee River in Wisconsin. I've had bigger ones hooked but not landed. In most of the great lakes area, they are protected, but the population there in the Menominee is sufficient that they actually have an open season for them. I believe it is the month of September, 1 fish per season , 50" minimum size. Their populations are also rebounding pretty significantly in both the Upper and Lower Niagara Rivers. These species don't get anywhere near as large as those monsters out your way and in the Pacific Northwest. Tim ps, I had also seen a supposedly reliable report that the white sturgeon pictured in the OP was caught in the Frazer river in British Columbia. -
Our Pens are going in tomorrow morning (Sat 4-11-09) at 0900 and our pen fish are scheduled to arrive from the hatchery noon - 1:00ish on Thursday 4-16-09. Anyone that would like to help out with either (or both) are more than welcome. Tim

State of the LOU (April 09) - LOU Maps
Tim Bromund replied to BlueEye's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Chad, I think the xx.xx.xxx format would be more useful. since on the water everyone use the minutes series of numbers when talking about location. i.e. "we were fishing the 30 line" which is 30 'minutes' on the lat set (for example) 43.30.128 Since, in this part of the world, one minute of lat is 1 mile+/- that lets people know how far offshore someone was fishing. For example, Olcott Harbor is at the 20 line, more or less, so if someone said they were fishing the 30 line, you'd know they were approx 10 miles offshore. longitude isn't quite as simple, since I believe a minute of lon is somewhere around 3/4 mile, but it still gives someone a good point of reference. Thanks, hope that made sense. Tim -
State of the LOU (April 09) - LOU Maps
Tim Bromund replied to BlueEye's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Chad, what format are the Lat/Log coordinates in? It doesn't seem to be the typical deg.min.sec format (xx.xx.xxx), it is xx.xxxxxx? Just curious because in looking at the numbers for Olcott, they seem way off. THanks, Tim -
That's GREAT to hear!!! Thanks for the update. Tim

You know, we have a good bit of the water fleas in Erie as well. I've discovered that if I put some tension on the line and flick the line with my finger, they all fall off. Ever try that? We have a different type of flea in Ontario. That trick doesn't work on the spinier water flea and fishhook flea we have in Lake O. This stuff will clog your guides in short order and not let go. Tim

or just buy the churchs and run them without issue right out of the package. Tim

I was going to post the link to the Ontario MNR site but it doesn't appear to be working at the moment. try this, maybe the link is just temporarily down http://www.fishinontario.com/regs.html Tim -
Todd, the Oak gets more pen fish because they have had studies conducted on their project that conclusively prove that Pen Rearing is beneficial to survival and returns at that site. Those studies haven't been conducted at Olcott yet, but hopefully in the near future with the marking/tagging capabilites of the fish marking trailer, we will be able to do the same and increase our pen held amount. Olcott is still getting our standard 130,000 (or so) stocking, but without the study, we are limited as to how many we can pen rear, the balance are direct stocked. For what it's worth, last year with the low numbers of fish available due to the poor returns at the hatchery and low numbers of fish to stock, we were allowed to pen Olcott's entire allotment of 72,500 kings (don't quote me on the numbers, 67,500 also comes to mind), but now that stoking numbers are back to normal, we are back to our standard 50,000 without the study. All of the feeding info is available on the LOTSA website. I have a feeding schedule set up where you can request the dates and times for feeding and I update the feeding schedule with requested times every evening thoughout the pen project. Feeding the fish is a lot of fun, it's like feeding a swarm of starving pirhana especially the steelhead pen (because they aremuch larger than the baby kings and more active and aggressive). It's a great things to get kids involved in. Thanks, Tim

What are they worth......................
Tim Bromund replied to Rev300's topic in Tackle and Techniques
stinger, unless they recently brought them back that I haven't heard about, Cannon hasn't made the dual crank 6 manual riggers since like the late 80's or early 90's. I always thought that was a neat concept back in the day. I know I wished they stil made them when I bought my 4 Cannon Unitroll HP manuals back in 1996. Rev300, That being said, those probably have the aluminum bodies which are always in high demand because they don't crack like the current lexan bodies do. Just a WAG on my part, but I'd bet you could get around $150 apiece for them, perhaps a bit more. Those stainless steel booms (as opposed to the telescopic type) are also popular with a lot of guys. Tim -
Not sure if they help or not since I continue to take hits on them even after the e-chip falls out (common on the older ones). I'm guessing it's more the action of the flasher than the chip itself, but I'm sure they don't hurt. Like Bill said, some days they want spinnies, spme days they want pro trolls (and some days they just hammer both, not to mention Becholds, Hot Spots, Opti Inticers....) Tim

Transom Down rigger bar
Tim Bromund replied to woodschurch's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Dave, who's having trouble focusing??? That's a laker, not a brownie Tim -
You want the mast as far forward as you can possibly get it. when I had the little boat (19' Bayliner bowrider) I had the mast mounted in the front pedestal seat mount up in the bow.. Now with the 24' Thompson Hardtop, I have the planer reels mounted on the inside of each gunwale, running to a pully (small sailboat block) at the back corner of the hardtop and from there to a set of spring loaded pullys at the front of the hardtop. I just use my telescoping boat hook to reach out and grab the tow line. THere was an old thread here in the This Old Boat section where I had pics posted ofthat setup . here's the link to that thread: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5218 Tim

Brand of downrigger?
Tim Bromund replied to woodschurch's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
That's normal for all riggers, it's the cable vibrating as it goes through the water. wouldn't feel right with out the riggers singing. Doesn't scare the fish and many of us are convinced it helps pull fish into the spread. Tim -
Sharkbait, FYI, the second pic is a coho salmon, not a bow. Nice fish, thanks for posting. Tim

Water Good Color???
Tim Bromund replied to Billy Bones's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Yes, that means cloudy/stained water. Not only will the darker water usually be warmer than clear water, if you can count pebbles on the bottom as you are trolling by, obviously the fish will be a lot more spooky and harder to catch, or they just won't be there. The murkyness of the water is a form a cover for the fish when they are in skinny water. Tim -
On Thursday April 9th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Lake Ontario Fishing Seminar by well known Charter Captain and In Fishermen writer Captain John Oravec (Troutman). John will be speaking on the effects that wind and current have on deciding where to begin your fishing effort each day. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The seminar will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The seminar is open to the public with a $5 charge at the door for non-members. See www.lotsa.org for any questions.

No, sorry Jim, that's both incorrect and irrelevent. The boat that flipped over in the gulf had a stuck anchor attached off a stern tie down ring in 6+ foot seas that when they tried to drag it free under power, flipped the boat. The T-top had nothing to do with it. That tragedy was caused by user error. http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/us/200 ... s.baynews9 Tim
