I had Cannons for years, they were fine, I liked them, very reliable but slow. I have Scottys now and I'd never go back to Cannons. I prefer the design and looks of the Scottys, they are bulletproof, really simple to use, fast retrieving and I can get a rigger rod reset and deployed faster than with any other rigger on the market. I used the new high speed Cannons on a friends boat and really didn't care for them. Tim

micjd, just for the record, no you don't have to stop once you get your limit for any species, here's the pertinent page from the regs: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31416.html there is some opposition to this possible new rule change. I think the hard core Muskie guys in particular are not crazy about adding more allowable rods. Those guys are fanatically protective of their favorite fish and are concerned about excessive mortality, even from C&R, if too many fish are caught. I believe they are worried that more rods = more fish caught = more fish dead. Not saying it's right or wrong, but that is my understandiing of their position. If this reg change ever goes through, it will have to be state wide, all species. I've heard from DEC biologists that I know that a Lake Ontario T & S only provision will NEVER fly. I'd like to see it, mainly for when there's just 2 of us in the boat. I'd like to be able run my regular 6 rod spread, but I'd never try and put 12 out with 4 people in the boat. I'm usually a big believer in the less is more philosophy. Tim

They treated a number of streams last year, with more streams on the docket for treatment this year. It's still a regular operation on Lake O on both sides of the pond. Tim

Not at all. I run mine off the spring line cleats (about 2/3 of the way up right next to the windshield) with a rope on the back end tied to my gunwale mounted rod holders (they pull up out of the water much easier from the back). No loss of control whatsoever and having them there really mutes the pitch and roll in heavy seas, much more pleasant trolling with them in the water. Good luck with them. Tim

If Dicks has anything, they would probably have drift socks. Not the same thing as a trolling bag. Drift socks aren't constructed to handle the constant stresses of trolling and will be ripped to shreads in no time. As stated above, get real trolling bags. I have 2 of the Amish Outfitters 28" Beefy Bags on my 24' Thompson and with both deployed, it will slow me down alomst to a dead stop at idle and really smooths out the ride when trolling on a rough day. I fished with Chad (Gill-T) and his brother today on his shakedown. We fished out of Olcott. NW winds made the lake a little snotty but the fish still cooperated ok. We had a bit of the dropsies today but still ended up 6/14 with 4 browns and 2 coho landed. other than 1 lost fish on an evil-eye off the rigger, every fish came on smithwick rattling rogues in the shamefully discontinued log perch color (makes a really good goby imitation). No other sticks were working so we ended up with that pattern on 3 of the 4 board rods and all of them were taking hits. Typical 2-3 lb early season browns. Here's one of the cute little guys (all returned to grow up) we had the boards in pretty tight to shore here'e the log perch smithwick: Nice way to kick off the season. Tim

No, I believe you can do that as well, but what I was talking about is it is my understanding is that if you have your buddies MMSI number recorded in your Radio, you can use the radio to do a direct station to station call without it being broadcast over the public airwaves. Tim

Rich, It is my understanding that the Coast Guard doesn't have DSC response capability in the Great Lakes at this time, but the alert will also go out to all other DSC equipped radios in range, so someone else might respond to the distress call. If nothing else people with DSC radios can do direct private calling to other DSC radio owners if you have their MMSI number programed into your unit. Tim

I've used blacks on other peoples boats and really didn't care for em. I prefer pinch pad style releases and use the Scottys with the 30" leads and they are great. I have NO false releases, can load the crap out of the rods, and with the long lead, if a fish even breathes on my lure it shows up on the rid tip, shakers are NO problem. Tim
