For rigger reels, IMO you can't beat the Shimano Triton TR200G. Butter smooth drags and 4.3:1 retrieve. I also have had great luck with the Penn 209's, the retrived ratio on those is a bit slow (3.1:1), but the drags are awesome as well. For years I have set my reels up as follows: fill bulk of spool with 17 lb Trilene XT, then double uni knot 100 feet of 30 lb big game, then a #8 spro power swivel (50 lb test). In the spring when trolling the shoreline with the boards for browns, I put a light (10 lb) fluoro leader on and then just a small duolock snap to the lure. Once summer/flea season hits, I just replace the leader with heavier fluoro (20 lb). In the spring when you're running sticks in shallow water off the boards, the resistence of the heavy, large diameter 30 lb keeps the sticks from diving too deep and hanging on bottom, yet the light fluoro leader still provides a measure of stealth to the presentation. Once flea season arrives , the heavy 30 lb big game is between the rod tip and the release and keeps the fleas from collecting. Tim

Yeah, but these are the hard core guys that most likely, look out for that sort of thing anyways. It's the other 90% out there that are more likley to be the problem, and they won't know or care what your flag means. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, not at all, I just don't think it'll make any difference. don't forget, that's not now many different people looked at the thread, that's how many hits. that's more likley a few of us looking at it a bunch of times. Yeah, we know that Todd. We also know that an awful lot of ragboaters use that statute to intentionally screw with us, just because they can. The fishing vessels with gear in the water refers to commercial trawlers/net boats etc, and the like, not sportfishing boats. That doesn't change the fact that in reality, a sailboat under sail is WAY more manuverable than a trolling rig, fully deployed, and they know that and take advantage of it to mess with us. A lot of them are also just utterly clueless (and don't care) as to how restricted we really are out there. Tim

It has been widely agreed that with 45 lb copper (.037 diam) that you get 22 feet of depth per 100 feet of copper at 2.5-2.7 down speed. Tim

Another big game user here. Been a Berkley line user for years and been completely happy with it. No reason the change. Guys seem to want to use the pink Ande for some reason, I see no comprehensible reason why the pink colored Ande would work better than anything else. Probably becasue initially that's what someone said they used and so other people tried it. I think it's the diameter of the 30 lb line that is the key, not the brand or color. Tim

Sorry Chad, I have to disagree on a number of points. 1. while it may seem that these sites reach a large audience, they in reality, only reach a small fraction of even the trollers on the lake much less everyone else out there. 2. most ragboaters know full well how unmanuverable we are, in fact many of them revel in it and intentionally try to mess with us because they know they have the right of way under sail and there ain't jack we can do about it. For example, a couple years ago, we were fishing the summer Scotty out of Port Darlington and quite a few boats were intentionally harassed and buzzed by the rags out in front of Oshawa. One boat actually had a rag intentionally run between him and a fish they were fighting and cut it off. They even went so far as to buzz past him and tell him they did it on purpose and that there was nothing he could do about it. They may not know it's wire, but they sure don't mind running over it if they get the opportunity. Besides, it stall takes people to give a crap for it to work, which most, sad ito say, don't. Do you really think that chooch in the Grady that cut us off in your boat last year at the bar would have acted any different if you would have had a flag flying? I don't. It's a nice sentiment, and maybe I'm just jaded, I just think it'd be a whole bunch of wasted effort for very little return. Tim

In order for this idea to work, 2 things would have to happen 1) the other boats would have to know what the flag meant 2) they would have to CARE what the flags meant and actually take action to avoid your rig. IMO, both are pretty unlikely. Also, quite honestly, if your running a 600' copper in an area where the boat traffic is enough that you really have to worry about someone passing 200 freaking yds behind you, you're probably in an area where you maybe shouldn't oughta be running the 600' copper. ah yes, the good old Wisconsin Trout Boil. It's also a great way to cook brownies. My Dad's from Marinette Wi originally. I think I first experienced the trout boil back in 1981 or 82. Yummm!!! Tim

Jerry, subtroll and depth raider as basically the same unit, it all depends on if you prefer a digital display or analog. Both work great. i retired a fish hawk when I got my Depth Raider and don't miss it at all, IMO, both the ST and the DR are vastly superior to the FH. Tim ps, I understand Fish Hawk is completely redoing the 840, so maybe the new ones will be better. Tim

Ted, I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but if that board is rotten, I can pretty much guarantee you it isn't alone. You should probably have the boat looked at to see how much of the wood structure is rotten. I ended up having the floor, stringers, motor bunks and transom replaced in my 1986 Thompson a couple years ago. The rot was pretty extensive. When I looked at the pile of crumbled, rotten plywood that used to be my transom, I thanked my lucky stars to still be alive. As gone as it was, I could just see a big wave ripping the entire transom, motor, batteries etc. off the back of the boat and to the bottom of the lake. It wasn't cheap, but the boat is now better built than it was when it left Thompson's Factory. Tim

Wow Rob, that must have been fun. I've had that happen a couple times over the years on steelhead (on both the mail lure and a free slider) but never kings. It's wild watching steelies jump like crazy during a fight and realizing you are watching two different fish jump. Tim

you won't need the black box on the subtroll probe rigger. The coated cable is insulated and shouldn't be putting out ANY charge, positive or negative, it'll definitely help on the other riggers though. Tim
