I don't think you want to let a diver out with the reel not in gear. At least the way I do it, I get the diver in the water, put the rod on the holder and back off the drag just enough to let the diver slowly creep its way out to depth as I'm setting other lines. you'd be amazed how often that get whacked as it's creeping out, especially first thing in the morning. maybe you can used the spool tension knob to fine tune the rate of creep. Actually when I fry fish, I just use an egg wash and cracker meal. Take the cheap square boxes of saltine crackers and run the crackers through a food processor to grind them to a fine texture. Dip the fillets in the egg wash and then bread them in the cracker meal and deep fry. Deep frying is not my favorite way to prepare salmon, we usually smoke or grill those, but this is killer on perch and walleye, bluegills, etc. Tim

No the springs are not necessary, in fact those were originally from my weak pulling Wille Board Mast and board setup, but didn't last a single day with how hard my Amish Outfitters Redwood Boards pull, they were stretched right out. The pulleys are now mounted directly to the rail clamps and I have the Amish Outfitters Board Snubbers inline at the end of the tow line to provide some cushion from the strain of pulling the boards. I agree you want them as far forward as possible. Mine are back a foot or so from the front of the grab rail, simply so that the tow lines will clear the VHF and pole mounted GPS antennas that are mounted on either side of the front of the cockpit. Best fluorocarbon line/leader material ?

I haven't run snubbers in at least 10 years. Landing percentage definitely increased without them. Yes, the Big Game is rather stretchy and has enough give and plenty of strength. Tim -

I've been running 50# big game for the leader between diver and flasher for years now. -
It's at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Ave. (Route 78, two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY. Tim

Hi Bob, With Hank bowing out this year, LOTSA has formed a Pen Rearing Committee with a number of members participating in the committee. LOTSA is committed to continuing the Olcott Pen Project, particularly in light of one of the tidbits of info the DEC gave us at Thursday's Lockport State of the Lake Meeting. While the data is preliminary since they are still in the middle of the study and will be collecting coded wire tags for several years yet, it was very encouraging to hear that based on the data collected so far, it appears that they are seeing a 1.7:1 return of pen reared vs direct stocked kings, so almost twice as many pen fish as direct, so it is important to keep the projects going. Also it sounds like they have gotten their water issues corrected at the hatchery and are ahead of schedule this year, so we'll be getting our pen fish early, rather than later in the spring, when many of the harbors have water temp issues like we have seen the past couple years. Please add me as the contact, at the club email address [email protected]. Thanks, Tim

You want to see a 6 hr infomercial, you should have been at the Best Chance Too guys Salmon School we hosted the year after Dan and Dave's first NY one 6 years ago. Of course that was before BCT disgraced themselves by getting caught cheating in tournaments.

I'm guessing that the area below the dam and most of Fisherman's Park should be open and fishable at Burt Dam. I know some friends have fished the Oak recently as well. Tim

We have changed the date of our March membership meeting from Thursday 3/13 to the following Wednesday 3/19 at the 4H at 7pm. This was to avoid a conflict with the DEC’s “State of the Lake†presentation that they scheduled for Thursday 3/13 at 630 at the 4H and to help insure that there is a large interested crowd for the “State of the Lakeâ€. Our meeting next Wednesday promises to be a good one as we will have presentations and Q&A with Kevin Jerge, Vince Pierleoni, Rich Hajecki and a Raymarine Factory rep on what is new with Electronics and Gear that we use to fish Lake Ontario with. The owner of the new Tackle Shop in Wilson Harbor will be there to tell us about his shop along with Kevin, Vince and Rich talking about the Salmonpalozza (www.wilsonharborinvitational.com) week of May 3rd thru the 9th. The end of the meeting will feature a Q&A fishing session with these experts. There will be a generous amount of pre-season deals, discounts and door prizes available throughout the meeting. Mark it on your calendar and bring a friend, it promises to be a good one to kick the season off right!

Best fluorocarbon line/leader material ?

I've mostly used Seaguar and been happy with it, but last year, based on Paul's recommendation, I bought a spool of 20 lb Gamma Fluoro and gave that a try and it was great as well. I know Pete Alex carries it at his Great Lakes Tackle Shop webstore, not sure where else it is available. I also concur on the others opinion of Vanish. I'm a Berkley line guy and use their lines almost exclusively, but Vanish is junk. The only thing that vanishes is your tackle and your money to replace the lures you lost. Tim -

Planer board question.
Tim Bromund replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Chad, I run everything but my longer coppers off of the walleye boards. I don't run the longer coppers very much if I can avoid it. Besides we don't fish much in really wavy condition anymore because dad's getting too old to take the beating, but I have most certainly run my big boards in big waves with no issues. Planer board question.
Tim Bromund replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
My Amish Outfitter redwood boards were less expensive and pull harder and run better right out of the box than the otter boats do after you spend a crapload of additional money modifying them to make them run right. I'm just sayin'. Tim -
But as long as your lures are running above the fish and not below, they're still gonna get bit. 15' is just a halfhearted flick of a salmon's tail so I don't really care if i'm a little shallower than what is displayed on the counter or where the balls show on the graph. Heck, any fish that shows on the graph that isn't directly beneath the boat is higher than it is displayed on the graph too. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I'm not a big fan of super brightly glowing lures. This is mostly based on the fact that I spent a lot of years pitching glow spoons off of the west pier at Olcott, starting in the mid/late 80's and over the years, I have caught a LOT more fish on the 4th or 5th cast after a change than I have a freshly charged spoon. I think a little glow is great, a lot of glow, not so much. Tim

16 lb torpedo diver have less blowback than any rigger weight I've ever seen. Toms 15.5 lb Torpedos are great as well.
