  1. Brian, where did you get that info? After the fire, the press release was that their molds were destroyed in the fire and that they were not going to rebuild and sold the land the factory sat on to a non boating business. Interesting. Tim
  2. yup, even trolling the shoreline for browns, I'll have the probe rigger down 2-4 feet usually with a light flutterspoon on it back 60-80' other than that particular situation, I really couldn't care less what the surface speed is I can't remember the last time I even looked at GPS SOG while trolling other than to compare it to my down speed. I'm not using a Fish Hawk BTW, I'm running a Depth Raider, which I've been much happier with than the POS FH840 I used to own Tim
  3. We mark a waypoint for each hookup over the course of a season. You start to see trends as the season progresses. There will be significant clusters of points that will show areas where, for whatever reason, (current, structure etc), fish are consistently caught on multiple trips thjroughout the year. As I review the marks at the end of the season, there will be distinct areas with marks piled on top of marks on top of marks. At the end of each season, I will delete all of the marks, with the exception that I will take one from each of those clusters/concentrations, name it, and save it as a permanent waypoint. Invariably, by the end of the next season, that permanent point is buried under another cluster of seasonal marks, showing that once again that area was a consistent producer. Over time, this gives you a good selection of starting points to start your fishing day. I have one waypoint that has been in my GPS since 1998 that is approx 10 miles offshore of Wilson that has had fish on it every time I've fished it in the past 14 years. Tim
  4. My diver rods are 9.5' and 10.5' Daiwa Heartland heavy action diver rods. Divers put a lot of stress on a rod, I'm not sure med action rods have the guts, but to each his own. You want the extra length IMO, particularly with wire, to get them away from the boat to make sure your diver lines clear your rigger lines on turns. Wire under tension, touching a mono rigger rod line, also under tension will likely result in a cut rigger rod line. Tim
  5. That's odd, I have my Simrad AP14 hooked up to both the fluxgate compass and the NMEA 0183 wires connected to my Garmin GPS without any issues. Raymarine must have a reason to recommend against it, but I can't imagine what. Tim
  6. OK, I don't own one and assumed it would have both. I used to own an old FH 840 years ago and it had both. No loss really, IMO, surface speed and temp are really a superfluous and useless marketing gimmick anyway, since I'm not fishing on the surface and that info is readily available on most fishfinders if you really want it. Tim
  7. He really should hook the AP up to both the Fluxgate Compass AND the GPS. Why on earth wouldn't he want to hook the AP up to the fluxgate compass? Can't help with the wire colors, the last Lowrance I owned was a 90's vintage LMS 350A.
  8. It should show both sets of numbers on the display (both surface speed and temp and down speed and temp) at the same time. What are you trying to change over?
  9. Is it maybe set to display Celsius instead of Fahrenheit?
  10. On Thursday May 9th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Summertime King Salmon Techniques with Captain Paul Czarnecki who runs the Charter Boat “Free Spirit †out of Oak Orchard. Captain Paul will focus on the Oak Orchard area of the lake which has a terrific near shore fishery for Kings throughout the summer months. Paul will review some of the newer techniques he is utilizing to consistently put Kings in the boat for his clients using inline boards and the new super copper. This meeting falls in the middle of the Spring LOC Derby which will provide many current fishing updates as well at the meeting. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The meeting will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The Seminar is open to the public and free to attend. See www.lotsa.org for any questions.
  11. Our 3,500 Steelhead were delivered last tuesday the 23rd, our 67,100 kings are being delivered tomorrow (30th) if you are in Niagara county or maybe in Olcott/Wilson for the LOC, please consider signing up to feed the fish, They need to be fed 5 times every day 7:00 am, 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm and 7:00pm for the duration of the time they are in the pens (approx 3 weeks if water temps in the harbor allow) and it is a GREAT thing to bring the kids to. you can see what times are open and sign up to feed the babies at the LOTSA Website http://www.lotsa.org/Feeding_Schedule-13.htm Tim
  12. think chinese finger cuff. Compress/Bunch up the lead core sheath to increase the inside diameter so the mono slides in easier. It does take a little practice. what size leadcore are you using? Tim
  13. filling from the bottom ensures there are no air bubbles trapped in the drive.
  14. sure, but that's not trolling worm harnesses for salmon, stay focused man
  15. with their dorsal fins mostly
  16. so obviously, if you claim to be out trolling for salmon but are pulling a spread of worm harnesses....
  17. the big issue with changing hooks is trying to match the weight of the hook you are replacing. In general the lures are tuned to run properly with the weight of hook that comes on them and replacing with either a lighter or heavier hook can seriously affect the action. That said, you can also use hook weight difference to intentionally change how a lure runs, a lighter hook on a spoon for instance will let it run properly at slower speeds, but the spoon will spin out at the faster speeds and conversly, a heavier hook will let you run a spoon faster than the stock hook without spinning out. Sometimes little tweaks like that can really turn a dud into a stud. Some Sticks definitely run different with the front hook removed, it seems to give them a wider wobble. Tim
  18. FWIW a 1000 foot spool of 30 lb Malin has always perfectly filled my SG47LCa's and I believe that is .015. It looks like not more than 50 feet of wire lift on the spool in my pic above, so I'm not really worried about it, just mildly irritating having that little bit of wire left on the spool. Maybe I'll use it for pike leaders on my tip ups Tim
  19. I have 2 briad diver rods set up, they spend most of the season in the cabin once fthe fleas start to show up. I have 500yds of 50 lb power pro that perfectly fills up my Daiwa ADP 47LC's 20 lb is WAY too light for any diver application regardless of line tyle IMO, though I know some guys do successfully use 20 lb wire for divers, I've mostly run 30 lb wire. Tim
  20. I know it didn't take 300+ yds, but it certainly took well over 200. Hey, Feel free to take your chances with that little backing, I'm not gonna do it. Peace. Tim
  21. Don't know about that, but here's a pic from last august that fish flipped the counter, went another 100+ on the counter before it finally stopped. Lets just say the backing you suggest would have been, um.... insufficient for that one.
  22. I run mine off the hardtop as well, the reels are mounted on the rocket launcher at the back of the top and the pullys are mounted on the grab rail near the front of the hard top using some rail clamps. Electric Cisco Planer Reel mounted to the Launcher Pully near the front of the HT mounted to the grabrail (the spring is now gone and the pullys are mounted directly to the rail clamp) Tim
  23. I know a place that sill has $0.10 wings with a 2 drink minimum.
  24. On your 8 lb 4 year olds in Lake Michigan, maybe
