No it is quite a bit thicker. I was able to .get probably between 900' and 950'on a 47LC over the weekend, which filled the spool completely and in reality, is more than enough. If I get a fish on that takes that much wire, I'd better be chasing it anyway It sounds like a lot of guys put a little backing behind wire on an Okuma 30 size to fill the spool up, I'd bet 1000' of Torpedo 19 strand fits perfectly on one of those. As a boat owner, I belong to Boat US for the same reason I belong to the NRA as a gun owner. Boat US represents us in Washington and helps keep the critters that inhabit that cesspool from screwing with us too much. They have been fighting the good fight on our behalf for years now on the Ethanol issue, not always successfully, I'm afraid, but I'm certain that without Boat US's efforts, we'd have had E15 forced on us a long time ago, It's a small price to pay to have someone representing our interests. As far as I'm concerned, if you own a boat, you should be a member of Boat US. If you belong to a club, they may very well be a Cooperating Group which gets you a big discount. For Instance, LOTSA is a Boat US Cooperating Group and as such, our members are entitled to a 50% discount on their Boat US Membership. Tim

Planer board line besides Dacron.
Tim Bromund replied to cuseroller's topic in Tackle and Techniques
sounds like a world of frustration to me. The 500 lb spectra from Amish Outfitters isn't really that expensive and it lasts forever http://amishoutfitters.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=17&zenid=721cd973bb34b44685d6e1b9f6541ead Tim -
I'd actually be much more comfortable with the boat in the slip than on a trailer once the engine has been un-winterized. The water in the harbors has got to be in the mid-upper 40's by now and with the boat in the water and the engine down at the water level, it's very unlikely to see the block get cold enough to freeze. On a trailer, not a chance, I'd use it. but I'd be doing what Chad (Gill-T) does and bring the winterizing jug with the muffs and 4 gallons of RV antifreeze and re-winterize the motor in the marina parking lot after each use. I normally leave the boat in the slip in the fall as long as possible for the same reason. I feel it is much safer sitting in the warmer marina water than it is on a trailer until I'm ready to winterize it for the season. Tim

Bear Creek 4/5
Tim Bromund replied to gregmacedon's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Yup, this is as clear cut an example of someone who was both technically "in the right" and a major league douche-nozzle at the same time, that I have seen in quite a while. -

If you have a blue/green/copper peanut (or any combo thereof), that always seems to be a hot coho combo behind an orange baby doc. Tim

Olcott Pen Rearing Project Announcement
Tim Bromund replied to Tim Bromund's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Cool, thanks. I'll have the feeding schedule signup up on the LOTSA Website shortly, once we have a better idea from the DEC when we'll be receiving the fish for the pens. See you tomorrow morning. Tim -
no, coho are not the least bit boat shy and they'll be right there in the shallows with the browns, in fact, a good place to run a coho rig in your spread is off a rigger right in the prop wash, directly behind the boat 2-3 feet down and 10-15' back. For the fly leader on a small doctor, same ratio as a bigger spin doctor, about 3X. I usually run a peanut fly 15-18" behind a 5" doctor. Tim

Keep in mind that the DEC and NYSDOH recommendations are Pure CYA statements, and also I would suggest that the "No fish from 18 Mile Creek" would be in reference to resident fish that live in the creek, not migrant fish that spend a short time there and head back to the lake. Tim

On Thursday April 11h at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Seminar on Stealth Techniques for Browns & Kings with Captain Rob Westcott who runs the Charter Boat “The Legacy †out of Sandy Creek in Hamlin NY. Captain Rob is a dedicated Derby and Tournament angler along with being the Pen Rearing Coordinator for the Sandy Creek Pen project. Rob will talk through the simple stealth program he uses to be successful throughout the year. He will cover how many fishermen are beat by the lake before ever putting a line in the water or even leaving the dock. How fishermen have a tendency to complicate everything and how having an excessive amount of lures actually can make you less successful. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The meeting will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The Seminar is open to the public and free to attend. See http://www.lotsa.org for any questions.

Oh, is THAT why I was falling asleep reading it?

West Marine should have it.

No matter how tight you think you have it spooled initially, it's still not tight enough. Before you use a newly spooled wire rod you really have to go out over deep water, attach a 1 pound lead ball or a tripped diver and let all of the wire out and reel it back in under that tension to truly get it spooled tight. Just so you can see the difference a tightly spooled reel can make, make sure you zero the line counter before you let the wire out and see what the number is when you have it reeled in tight. I think you'll be very surprised just how much slack you've taken out by doing that. Tim
