  1. I use the 500 lb test spectra planer board line from Amish Outfitters http://amishoutfitters.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=17
  2. the spoon has it's own action that attracts the fish, no need for anything in front of it. Flies need an attractor in front because they have no action on their own.
  3. we don't remove the front treble to make them run higher, we remove the front treble because 90%+ of your bites come on the back hook anyway, so all the front treble does is tangle in the net. Tim
  4. Jim, gobies are a major predator of zebra and quagga mussels. They come from the same place and are one of gobies natural prey.
  5. Sk8man agree to a point, all I ran on my rigger rods back before fleas made it impossible was 12 lb. Lots of 30+ kings landed back in the 90's on that, though I will say that we were running almost exclusively spoons back then as well. Flasher/flies DO need beefier line than spoons IMO. Here's a 32 lb from 1998 or so off a rigger on 12 lb line and spoon. Tim
  6. Dave Chilson has a nice video from this years LOTSA Expo up on the LOC Website. Check it out when you get a chance. http://www.loc.org/ Tim
  7. I used the larger diameter torpedo diver antenna made for scottys/big jons that have an autostop bead last season, with regular coated cable on my HP Scotty and it worked fine as deep as I cared to run it. Their speed and temp cable works fine depending on the rigger you are using. After hearing about Brian Garrett losing several probes and sharks with it on his HP Scotty due to the stress of the abrupt stop from the high speed retrieve and heavy rigger weights, I elected to not put it on my rigger. ( I believe they have a statement on their website that it is not recommended for high speed Scotty Riggers) A friend using an older, slower cannon and a subtroll used both the torpedo antenna and uncoated speed and temp cable all last season without any issues. Tim
  8. With all the other deployment options available today I very rarely stack, but when I do the upper rod is always a spoon run behind a big jon mini diver disk, with the weight set at 90 deg so that it runs almost directly off to the side (port or starboard, depending on which rigger)let out about 30 feet and clip the line into the stacker release. Then very slowly let the rigger down to the target depth. The upper rod/line is pulled off to the side and out of the way of the lower rod if it fires, which keeps good separation between the two rods and they pretty much never tangle. The toughest part is judging how slow to let the rigger descend to keep the mini diver disk more or less even with the release as it is dropping. Tim
  9. Never had a problem with 27 lb Cortland Kerplunk myself.
  10. I've never had either break, shouldn't be an issue with a reel with a smooth drag. The 50 lb leader might survive a bit better if it gets nicked somehow.
  11. Yeah, what Carl said. I've been running 50 lb big game for diver leaders with flasher/fly's for years, around 9-10' I drop down to 30 lb big game leaders for spoons. Tim

  15. On Thursday March 14th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Seminar on Fishing for Salmon & Walleye utilizing Torpedo Divers. This seminar will be put on by Captain Jim Skoczylas who runs the Charter boat “Ultimate Adventure Sport Fishing †and Captain Jim Steel of "Dreamcatcher Sportfishing". Captain's Jim and Jim won the 2012 Amara-Can Walleye Classic this past summer using Torpedo Divers. They will be joined by Capt. Lucas Falkner of "Make The Turn Charters" out of Sandy Creek. All three Captains are Torpedo Diver Pro-Staffers Matthew Sawrie, who is the owner of Torpedo Divers, will also present and answer questions on the new Smart Troll down speed and temp unit hitting the market this spring. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The meeting will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The Seminar is open to the public and free to attend. See http://www.lotsa.org for any questions.
  16. yup, Simrad became part of the Navico family right about the same time Lowrance did and that was when you started hearing about all of the Lowrance CS horror stories as well.
  17. If you are going to make the switch from trebles to singles, you need to make sure you select a singe that matches the weight of the treble you are replacing. Spoons are designed to run with that weight hook behind it and doing with something lighter OR heavier will affect the spoons action. Tim
  18. Personally, I would suggest to never use crimps. Crimps are the cause of most probes ending up on the bottom. Use one of the terminators like the Klincher of the Cannon Terminators. you can even use the same wire line know we use for tying the snap swivel onto the wire diver lines, but it's a little bit tougher to tie due to the diameter and stiffness of the wire. Tim
  19. boy, I hope nothing ever goes wrong with my AP14
  20. I think you number is a bit low. I've been seeing attendance numbers more in the 10,000 to 12,000 range. Wish I could have made the trip. Tim
  21. Tuna's Reel Troubles, get the carbon fiber drag upgrade and power handle combo. I replaced the drags on both my 14 year old SG47LCA's a year or two ago and it is a piece of cake. I really wanted the power handles, and the washer sets came free with the handles. http://www.tunasreeltroubles.com/
  22. Breaking News NY State Supreme Court wants NYS to show good cause that gun law is constitutional http://t.congressweb.com/w/?QGUAYCFDZD
  23. The thing is Carl, I really want to get that spoon to fire, I've heard so many good things about it, it kills me that I can't catch anything on a Carbon 14. Are you running the smaller one or the Mag size mostly? Tim
  24. The boat crowds don't subside as the derby goes on, they intensify. Olcott will be crowded, but won't be insane. Most of the pack will most likely be down at the Niagara Bar. I will be out of Olcott myself. That is my home port and where I keep my boat slipped. There should be fish all over the place, just keep away from the pack and fish the hooks and bait pods you see on the graph. Feel free to PM me on here as we get closer to derby time and I'll let you know what's going on. Tim
  25. As long as the fish is in your cooler and counted towards your daily limit, why on earth would it matter if you cut a strip off it's belly to use to catch more? I think that is another one of those things that many people assume to be the case, but in fact, is not. At least I've never been able to find any specific prohibition in the regulations. If someone claiming it to be illegal can cite the pertinent regulation, that would be helpful. I believe Mortigan posted relevant inforation to the contrary above. Tim
