NFTA Small Boat Harbor Complaint
Tim Bromund replied to mostlymuskies's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Hey, if it's ok for Flo in the Progressive Boat Insurance Commercial, why not them. Seriously though, what the heck are they thinking, sometimes we really are our own worst enemies. That Progressive Commercial actually irritates the crap out of me as well, If one of their insured's put the hammer down and put their boat on plane in the NWZ of the marina like she does in the commercial and caused damage to other boats, they'd probably use that as grounds to decline the insurance claim. Brian, but then he'd have to downgrade to inferior riggers

On Sunday February 24, 2013 from 08:30am-3:00pm the Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Association will be hosting our 7th annual Fishing Expo and Flea Market. The Expo will be at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4H Building in Lockport, NY. 4485 Lake Ave (Rte 78), Lockport, NY 14094, approx 2 miles north of Lockport. The Expo will feature an exhibit hall full of Charter Captains, Fishing Equipment and Tackle Manufacturers, Tackle Shops, etc., selling both new and used tackle at Show Special Prices. Tables are filling up quickly this year and we already have several New Exhibitors. In addition to the great deals going on in the main hall, over in the seminar room, we will again be conducting a Lake Ontario Trout/Salmon Fishing Basics/Beginners Clinic in the Morning, which will be tailored to those beginners looking to get started fishing LO. In the afternoon, we will once again be sponsoring a Kids Fishing Clinic, designed towards getting kids and their parents started fishing. Both classes are free of charge as part of your Expo Admission, however for the Kids Class, Pre-Registration is required. Admission will be a $5.00 donation at the door. As in years past, all admission money collected will be donated to help fund Pen Rearing. Please visit the LOTSA Website http://www.lotsa.org for more information.

Maybe add a piece of shrink tubing over the bead after you get it set in position. I personally haven't had any problems keeping beads on mine, even with the 170 lb cable that comes on the new HP's, but I would think shrink tubing would work. Tim

Read this!!!!Where is our water going in the Great Lakes
Tim Bromund replied to rapala's topic in Open Lake Discussion
It has to do with the minimal needed water levels in the St. Lawrence River. yup, if they held water back, Montreal Harbor would have been left high and dry. Tim -
Current state of the Egg take at the Salmon River hatchery
Tim Bromund replied to Tall Tails's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Chad, no one engineered the run time, that is when the Tule strain of Kings is genetically wired to run. They are a river mouth/short river running strain that stay out in the ocean/lake as long as possible eating before they run. The Kenai River Strain is genetically wired to run in June because they have almost 1000 miles of river to travel to reach the spawning gravel. The Tule strain was selected for the Great lakes BECAUSE of those characteristics. Remember, they initially introduced salmon in the great lakes to eat alewives and they wanted a strain that would stay in the lakes eating as long as possible, couple that with the fact that a long Great Lakes tributary is 30 miles, so the Tule's were tailor made for what the Biologists were trying to accomplish. Didn't make sense to select a strain that ran in June because they had a long river travel ahead of them, because they wouldn't be out in the lake eating alewives. The fact that a multi-billion dollar sport fishery developed out of it was just a side benefit, they were stocked to eat as many alewives as they could for as long as possible. Tim -

ok, more than just rainbows, though they are more susceptible, here's a pretty thorough research paper on VHS. Check out section 2.4 on Control and prevention in particular. Paragraph 2.4.6 has this to say: 2.4.6. Disinfection of eggs and larvae Disinfection of eyed and green eggs is an efficient and cost-effective preventative measure for stopping the spread of the disease (for detailed procedures see ref. 5). here's the link to the entire paper http://www.oie.int/fileadmin/Home/eng/H ... 09.VHS.pdf Tim -

Flea markets or Shows?
Tim Bromund replied to DJ 17's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
LOTSA will be having our annual Fishing Expo and Flea market in Lockport on Sunday Feb 24, 2013. I'll be putting up a more detailed posting on it shortly, but that is the date, along with our Full Day Salmon School on Saturday Feb 23. Look for an announcement on that one shortly as well. This School promises to be a another great one and will be a super follow up to the outstanding presentations we had the past two years by Capt. Vince Pierleoni and Capt. Bob Cinelli. Tim -
If you want to masquerade as a redneck, just get yourself a nice $20,000 double wide, and park a $40,000 bass boat and a $50,000 dually next to it. Oh, and lots of NASCAR paraphernalia all over the place

Current state of the Egg take at the Salmon River hatchery

Yes, I know Brian, and I was kind of agreeing with you that even though they are there for the taking in Erie, they are a totally unused resource there and are pretty much wasted as a result. I was simply explaining WHY they stock browns in Erie for those that don't know the history. Who says we don't target browns on the west end? Many of us certainly do. It's overshadowed by the fact that we have Kings to play with all season, but we have a great summer brown fishery. Just because in a normal year, those on the East end HAVE to beat up on their brown trout all summer to have any fish to catch, doesn't mean we don't target them as well on our end. -

Can I get a big AMEN here I really wish we could get kings back into Caledonia, particularly for western basin tribs, but there appears to be some personal agenda's and territorial protection going on in the hatchery system that won't let that happen. -

Vince, don't know about this year, but I remember that question coming up at the State of the Lake meeting back in the spring and they indicated that they get almost NO wild fish returning to the hatchery as they aren't imprinted on the hatchery/beaverdam brook. -

They used to stock browns in Erie and stopped for years. If I remember correctly, they started stocking browns again 6 or 7 years ago (I think) when they made the decision to stop stocking domestic rainbows in Erie due to (in my opinion, misplaced) concerns with domestic rainbows mixing with the fairly significant numbers of wild steelhead being produced in the Cattaraugus Creek system ( 25%+ of the steelhead in that system are now wild) so they started stocking browns again to make up for the loss of the domestic rainbow stocking. There are good numbers of browns in Erie, DEC trawls have found good populations hanging around Brocton Shoal in the summertime, but apparently everyone on Erie would rather fill their freezers with tasty boots, so no one fishes for them. I'm sure they are there for the taking along the shoreline in the spring, same as they are on Ontario. -
I thought rednecks all drank that disgusting piss-water Budweiser??

Honestly, being over the lower unit really shouldn't be an issue, since your engine should be off (not running in neutral) before you ever let anyone jump off it into the water or try to climb back up onto it. Basic boating safety 101. Tim

What downrigger to put on new boat?
Tim Bromund replied to Reel Overtime's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Yes, I agree, the Traxstech Riggers look very nice with some really cool features. They had one on display at out LOTSA Expo last winter, the video of the new rigger on their website was filmed there at our Show. Kind of pricey though at almost a grand apiece. Tim -

Just for the record, Scottys aren't plastic, they are fiber reinforced nylon, which is much stronger and resilient that the brittle crappy lexan on Cannons. -
