I know a lot of charter boat captains from most of the ports around the lake, and NONE of them fit your description above, least of all Paul. He is actually one of the least self righteous or egotistical guys you'll ever meet and he certainly doesn't "hate" recreational fishermen. The fact that he gave good advise based on many years of experience got your undies in such a twist makes me think that you are the one with the super-sized ego. Tim

never bought that whole black only diver nonsense. It's a load of crap IMO. Kings have loved a kelly green diver since the 80s and it's just as true today as it was back then and I always have one in the water. Last week, my two hottest divers were both metallic purple. Tim -
Howie, the sh.t will be squeezed out in full force next week.

I replaced the drags on my 13 year old SG47LCA's last year with Tuna Tom's carbon drags and it was a piece of cake. I got the drag washers and power handles as a set. The power handles are sweet. Tim

Black's release adjustability ultimate test

If blacks were the only releases available, I'd invent something else so I wouldn't have to use them -
Black's release adjustability ultimate test

what sort of release has any danger of being dropped overboard? -

Mexico, made the board!
Tim Bromund replied to Total Chaos's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
The spotting is more typical of a coho, the leading edge of the anal fin is much longer than it would be on a pure chinook, it has characteristics of both species in the tail and very light spotting on the tail. I was just looking at the pic and was going to comment that it looked like a hybrid when I saw that you indicated that in your post. Nice fish Brian Tim -

Nope, there's 500 yds of 50 lb power pro on that reel, I was watching the counter spin the whole time. I know line counters get inaccurate as they empty and that this fish didn't really rip off 300+ yds of line, just saying it was easily the longest run I've seen a king take since my 38 lber on the Olcott pier back in 1992 that took all but 3 or 4 wraps of line on my reel and that WAS 350 yds of 8 lb test. Just saying it was the first time I've had a fish roll the line counter. Don't you have some cavities to go fill doc? -

Still a work in progress Brian. All I use the cabin for is rod storage, so I'm living with it tore apart this season and I'll have the boards cut, epoxied and ready to put back together once I pull it out of the water. -
lower niagara fall drift fishing
Tim Bromund replied to reddog20fan's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Mark, A bow mounted trolling motor is an absolute must for boat control, both because you need it to control the boat speed to get the proper vertical presentation and because the popular drifts have a LOT of boats piled into a very tight area and total boat control is extremely important so you're not playing bumper boats with your neighbor. Those currents, eddies etc will push a boat around in a hurry. Tim -

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): Time on Water: 6:30-2:30 Weather/Temp: freaking hot Wind Speed/Direction: SW initially, then shifted to E then NE Waves: flat to tight 2's with caps Surface Temp: 75 Location: Olcott LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 10 Total Boated:8 Species Breakdown:salmon and steelhead Hot Lure: 42 Second Stinger Stingray Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 1.9-2.2 Boat Depth: 380-450 Lure Depth: 40-100 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Dad and I got out about 6:30 and tried the inside waters first, saw a decent picture and cold water inside this morning (44 deg down 40') but no takers so we pointed it north. Action wasn't fast and furious out there either but we had some bites. Best action was between the 26.5 and 28 lines (380-450 fow). We had a very large mature on today, first time I ever had a fish roll a line counter reel (yes it went over 1000' on the counter) Dad got it within 25 feet of the boat and I got a good long look at it, it was absolutely mid to upper 30's, but it just sat out there wallowing and headshaking 25' out and dad couldn't budge it any further and eventually it straightened the treble on the spoon and we dropped it. We were at idle with a bag out but just couldn't move it. In hindsight, I should have put us in neutral at that point and dealt with any resulting tangles after we got the fish in the boat. Fish had a tail like a freaking turkey fan. Really could have used a third person in the boat for that one. By far, the biggest fish we've had on on the boat. Oh well, that's fishing. Interesting thing is, I decided to run double divers today instead of cores/coppers, with the wires as low divers and power pro as high divers, and the hot rods were the two power pro high divers. That big fish hit a spoon on a high diver 200 out on a 3.5 setting. way up high and out of temp. Dad fought it for a half hour before we dropped it (based on the time stamp on the gps waypoint we entered when the fish hit). Other than that and a couple shakers we got some 7-9 lb steelies, but no other matures. Riggers and flasher flies were ice cold today, all bites came on the 4 divers and on spoons. Most action, including the big king we dropped, came on a 42 second stingray on the high diver 200 out on a 3.5 with second best being NBK stingray on the other high diver out 180 (with a mag ring) Tim

Dipsy Setting Question
Tim Bromund replied to Guppy35's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I always just get the diver in the water, put the rod in the holder and let it slowly creep out on a light drag. It keeps good tension on the line and actually fishes it's way out to it's planned destination. You'd be amazed how many times it gets whacked as it's creeping out shallower than where I planned to put it, especially first thing in the morning when fish are up high, feeding out of temp. Tim -
Dipsy Setting Question
Tim Bromund replied to Guppy35's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
They are further away than you think.. There is a belly in the line due to drag that makes it appear that they are going straight back at the boat, but they are really much further out. This is a quick sketch I did in AutoCAD a while back sowing how it really looks. Disregard the lack of bend in the rod, I only spent about 3 minutes on this Tim -
The Credit gets much larger runs, but since the kings are stopped at the Streetsville Dam, I would suspect that more salmon make it to the spawning gravel on the Bronte. Steelhead get lifted above the Dam on the Credit and have great spawning success once they are able to reach the cold water upper sections. John at the CRAA could probably get you a lot more information. http://www.craa.on.ca/ Tim

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: FishStyx ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 8-19-12 Time on Water: 0700 Weather/Temp: Sunny 60's -70's Wind Speed/Direction: SW 10-15 early but died down Waves: 1-2's but laid down as the morning went on Surface Temp: Location: Olcott LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 11 Total Boated:11 Species Breakdown:Kings, Steelhead, Brown Hot Lure: Flasher/fly Trolling Speed: 21.5-2.8 SOG Down Speed: Boat Depth: 250-350 fow Lure Depth: 70-100 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Dad and I finally got the boat out for the first time since the LOTSA Club Tournament on July 14. First stop was the gas dock and then we got out on the water around 0700. Absolutely nobody was working inside so we ran out a bit and set down at the 22.5 N line and set lines on a NW troll. For the 1st 45 minutes to an hour, we couldn't get 4 lines in the water. Great picture between the 22.5 and 23.5 lines and the kings were active early, but shut down for us by 10:00. After that is was a very slow pick until just after noon and we finished the day with a double as we were pulling rods. Nothing big, mostly teenagers though we did get 2 mature fish that were both in the 18-20 lb range (probably mature 2 year fish). Ended up 11/11 with 8 kings, 2 steelhead and a small brown that took a flasher and fly on the 300' wire diver over 320 fow (must have been lost). 70-100 down was the active zone and all fish came on flasher/flies except one of the steelhead took an MC Rocket (fake meat) behind a big white lightning paddle on the 100 ft rigger. Spin Doctors, Pro Trolls and Opti Inticers all took shots and any color worked as long as it was green or had some green in it. All bites came on riggers and wire divers, 200 and 300' coppers were quiet except for 1 short hit and run on the 300 (we were probably to high above the fish with those coppers, should have put the 400 out). It was great to finally get out and catch a few after a month off. Back at it next weekend. Tim

I'm pretty sure it is closer to 40% You guys are talking about 2 entirely different issues. bandrus1, you are talking about the overall estimated population of wild vs hatchery fish in the system. What Chinook1981 was talking about is the percentage of wild hatched fry that recruit to the fishery. 3% is a long standing accepted percentage. What that means in real numbers is, the DEC test nettings in the Salmon River in the spring indicate that in a normal year, the Salmon River alone produces 5-10 million wild king salmon smolts. At the 3% recruitment rate, that would translate to between 150,000 and 300,000 wild salmon recruiting to the lake's salmon population a year. Add to that a significant wild population in many of the North Shore tributaries, and that's how we see the 40% average wild fish in the lake population. Tim
