Your Rods " bow " When Trolling
Tim Bromund replied to howitzer's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Are you trying to set up copper for a wire diver? Copper is a different presentation that is flatlined (like lead core) either down the chute or off of planer boards. Braided stainless steel wire is used for divers, usually 30 lb wire. lots of good brands out there. I like Malin personally, but Mason, AFW and Torpedo wire are all popular brands as well. AFW - http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/lee.htm Malin - http://www.howiestackle.com/index.php?categoryID=8 Tim -
just because the flashers put a lot of strain on and the hits are vicious. I haven't used snubbers for years and seldom ever have a fish come unbuttoned on a diver with the 50 lb. Besides a diver with a flasher really isn't a stealth presentation and the 50 lb certainly hasn't hurt any. Tim

for flasher/flies on the diver, I use 50lb big game for a leader. For spoons I use 20 lb seguar fluorocarbon. Tim

Olcott 6-26
Tim Bromund replied to Tim Bromund's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nope, we didn't come across a lot of debris this trip. Earlier this year it was like navigating a minefield out there. Tim -
Paul, why would you think you'd have any better luck keeping them out of the strip clubs than you would keeping ME out of the strip clubs

Olcott 6-26

I only had 1 small steelhead, the rest of mine were all 1YO kings. Tim -
Finally got out again on Sunday, 1st time since the Pro Am. Dad, Adam and I headed straight out of port and set up in 150 fow and trolled NW between the 23 line and the 26 line and back in. Water temp profile looked promising, 68 deg on the surface and anywhere from 52-47 down 65 feet. Dink central out there along with the occasional nice steelie. Back in 170 fow in the early afternoon picked up a teenage king. All in all a decent day with a steady pick, ended up with 15 or 16 bites, mostly skippies but ended up with 2, 7-8 lb steelies and a 14 lb king in the box. All setups took fish, white double pearl glow becholds w/ Atommik mirage fly took a nice steelie on the 200 copper, wire divers at 150 and 180 with green crushed glow Opti Inticer and Atommik green crinkle and NBK Stingray. Various spoons, including various R & R Superlights and razors and NK28's in Kavorkian and spook, including what I call a reverse spook, which is an all glow blade with a black ladderback. We were marking fish deep again so I dropped the reverse spook down to 200' with an R&R superlight spook above it as a free slider and both took fish. Teenage king came on my old favorite, the Mountain Dew SD with green crinkle howie fly, tight to the ball (7 or 8 feet) on the probe rigger. Size could have been better, but not a bad june day. Saw the first sign of fleas collecting on the wire divers, just a little bit at the swivel. So with that and the lake looking like it is setting up, summer fishing can't be far off. Tim

Bill, rather than starting a senseless border war, I think it would be preferable to get this issue resolved diplomatically. I'd rather let the political critters do their jobs and get this fixed than start hassling a bunch of people that have nothing to do with the issue. Tim

Nice fish Scott!!! Way to go. Tim

Divers are farther away from the boat than they appear. There is a belly in the line that makes it look like they are almost straight behind the boat, but back a little ways it flares out and the the diver is actually quite a bit further to the side than you might think. it looks something like this: Tim

I know the business got sold, not sure what the current status is. Tim

I'd love to see the cluster*#$% that will happen every spring as 300 boats, both US and Canadian, try to call in every time they cross the border while trolling the Niagara Bar. I suspect this stupid policy will change almost immediately. Tim

LOC derby leaderboard

Hi Jan, I'm not familiar with that particular phone, but I would think there must be an app or add on that you can download to open pdf's. 4 or 5 years ago I had a primitive windows mobile smartphone and THAT dinosaur could open and read pdf files. Of course my previous droid and current iphone have no problems opening them, but if you can watch TV on yours, I gotta believe that opening pdf should be possible. Tim -
For what it's worth, a number of friends and I work in the Environmental Remediation business. One of my friends used who used to work on the Abatement side before he switched over to the Consulting side where I am (albeit for a competitor of ours) is a regular on my boat. Several years ago John was working on a project for the US Army Corps of Engineers on a cleanup of an old Manhattan Project research site for most of the summer. All the while he was working there the entire crew was tested daily for mercury amongst other environmental pollutants they were cleaning up to make sure they were not being exposed to any of the nastiness they were cleaning up.. That entire summer, all the while that was happening, he was eating mature Lake Ontario King salmon that we caught on my boat, and not once over the course of that summer with daily testing, did so much as a trace of mercury (or any other compound that these fish are supposed to be loaded with) register in his system. You would think if the level that those CYA fish advisory statements would have us believe actually existed in these fish, SOMETHING would have registered. Don't necessarily believe everything you read coming out of your government's handbooks, they, by their very nature, will exaggerate the crap out of any potential hazard so as to insulate themselves from any possible liability. Enjoy the bounty of our wonderful resource without feeling guilty about it. besides, you don't want to be one of those so called health nuts, all they do years down the road is look foolish as they lie there, dying of nothing Tim

Yup, why cob up some contraption to make an inferior release work when you can just get the one that works great right out of the box. Ditch the blacks and bands and use the Scottys instead, you'll be much happier. They are easier to use and just plain old work better. Tim

I don't think it reflects badly on Canadians or Canada. It just looks like a few border agents either don't know the laws they are supposed to be enforcing or maybe have gone on a bit of a power trip. Hopefully their superiors will smack them back down to reality and this will all just go away. Tim

My Depth Raider has been absolutely Rock Solid for the 6 years I've had it. Really can't say that about the POS it replaced. A probe battery last me over a full season and readings are rock solid steady as deep as I've had to run it. You really can't go wrong with any of the current units. Tim

Question About Lines Behind The Ball
Tim Bromund replied to howitzer's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Most of the really good fishermen I know and respect start at around 15 feet off the ball and adjust in or out as needed in accordance with the fish's preferences/aggressiveness on any given day. if you're fishing really shallow you might want to extend that back to 30-40 feet. There is a long standing 100 foot rule out there where the depth plus lead should equal 100, but I have never found that to be necessary. When targeting steelhead specifically, I'll sometimes only have a 5 or 6 foot lead off the ball. Tim -
yup 4'-5' per color, depending on trolling speed.

Not sure why you'd put a piece of mono between your lead and the powerpro, if you have the right releases it's no problem even with a 7,8 or 10 color lead core ??? a lot of times it is easier to thread mono into the LC sheath to tie the willis knot than it is with power pro. The fact that boards hold better on the mono is just a bonus. Try shortening your leader to the to the lure up to 15-20 feet. That seems to be the best length fore some reason. Tim

SPIN DOCTOR SET UP
Tim Bromund replied to rcbaron100's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I regularly run a spin doctor on my probe rigger 8' off the ball and quite often it is my hottest rod. I seldom ever run longer than 15' off the ball. I tie all my own fly leaders on 50 lb big game, I go with the standard 23-24" leader length from back of hook to end of loop. Tim -
Well that was Quebec, that's not really Canada, that's a whole different Planet
