May LOTSA Meeting and Fishing Seminar
Tim Bromund replied to Tim Bromund's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Hey folks, just wanted to point out that Thursday's speaker, Matt Yablonsky of Wet Net Charters ended up placing 4 fish on the final leaderboard in the spring LOC, including the grand prize winner. Come on down and hear what he has to say. Tim -
Dad and I hit the lake again yesterday and the lake pitched us a no no. Started in tight heading west towards Wilson and despite nice looking water, (colored but not muddy) and 50 deg on the surface, we had no bites other than the bottom taking one of our sticks. After a while we moved out to 50-80 fow and had great picture with bait and hooks, but couldn't move a rod. a number of charters were all working the same area, seeming just trolling in fairly tight circles like they were working a pod of fish which we did as well, but couldn't buy a bite. Not sure what we were doing wrong yesterday but hopefully we shook the skunk off for the season. Sorry Pepe, but you're not invited on the boat anymore this season Tim

Yeah, the reading on the display is relative and in reality is just a number, no matter what speed and temp unit you own. They key is the repeatability it provides. If you are catching fish when the Depth Raider says 2.3 for instance, you can always get back to 2.3 and continue to catch fish, regardless of what the actual speed may be. FWIW, my experience has been that the speed and temp on most fishfinders is wildly inaccurate. Tim

Oswego 5/3

not so much that we need to see proof, we just like fish pics -
yes, attach the float to the backing and send it back a couple hundred feet unless a real beast gets back behind the boat and you have to freespool more out to get the float/copper behind it temporarily. we originally started using the same float rig years ago to run a chute rod when fishing in tight for browns, to pick off the fish that moved off to the side as the boat goes overhead and have moved back behind the boat after it passes. let a stick out 30-40 feet clip on the float and send it back 200-300 feet without worrying about a flatline that far back catching bottom. A couple years ago, some of the guys started using it for copper as well.

yes, you take it off when it gets to the boat, same as you would an inline board set not to release. It doesn't have the drag of an inline and absolutely wont dive on you It will swing out to the side on turns but is generally right behind the boat. I usually run it 200' back or so, that is usually enough to keep it out of the fish that swing behind the boat. Obviously, not a rig to run in traffic

Here is the pike ball setup that Brian mentioned that is a 4" float from a Musky bait rig. I've since replaced the big offshore rigger release with the OR16 snap weight release clip, it has a pin in the middle of the pad that will prevent the release from popping on you. it helps if you have a rocket launcher to get the line up and out of the way, but will work in a regular rod holder as well. Quite a few of us that used to run copper on boards have seen a noticeable increase in hits running copper down the chute on the ball. It is easy to just flip the lever and let it free spool out on the clicker to get it behind an active fish on another rod that swings behind the boat. Then you can just reel it back into position after the fish is under control/boated. Tim

On Thursday May 12th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Seminar on Spring Fishing Lake Ontario for Trout & Salmon off of the Niagara County shoreline. This seminar will be put on by Captain Matt Yablonsky who runs Wet Net Charters. Captain Matt will speak on how to rig and fish a smaller boat successfully for Trout & Salmon. This seminar will provide beginners with a starting point to catch their first Kings along with providing experienced trollers those little things to make them more successful this Spring. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a sharing of information the current fishing conditions. So come join us and become more successful at fishing Lake Ontario! The meeting will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The Seminar is free and open to the public. See http://WWW.LOTSA.ORG for any questions.

Olcott Vacation 4/11-4/15

OK you were the guys taking delivery of the brand new Hewescraft, right? Way to christen the new ride!! Tim -
Ohhhhhh how I've missed you Ray! Welcome back buddy! To clear things up on the whole Scotty/Cannon controversy........what it comes down to is can the thing bring a ball down and will it bring it back up. Scotty makes a bullet proof rigger, and we were very happy with them for the 5 or 6 years we ran them. These new Cannons seem to have really stepped up to the plate, and answered any and all issues people ever had with them. We've ran them twice so far and they are really nice. Time will obviously tell on their durability, but in talking with the people who built them they are very confident in what they have come to the market with in 2011. Johnson Outdoors put A LOT of R&D into these riggers over the past 2 years. With prototype models in some of the guys hands as early as May 2010. To be honest I really like the Big John stuff too! I don't think anyone can go wrong if they stuck to those three brands, but I know of other brands that are stepping up their game as we speak. Vector has some prototype models out there right now that are a "Digi-Troll" type rigger. Heard some good things about them, but not many people have even seen them let alone ran one. It's been an exciting 12 months in the downrigger market, and competition and innovation are only good things! No controversy Rick, just some friendly, brand related stone busting. The new ride looks great. Tim

ummmmmm.... thanks ray

I think it was either a large increaase in price or a HUGE cut in stocking / programs. It amazes me that guys spend thousands on fishing gear and b*tch about $30.00????? I don;t mind paying more for my license. I look at it this way, 1) I get my money back in the number of trips, 2) Where can you expierence the fishing that we have here in NYS for $30.00? Break down the number of times you fish a season and compare it to gas, boat payment, slip fees, lunch for the day and tackle. License fees are the cheapest per trip out of all listed above. Agreed, they'll spend more than that at the bar Friday night and think nothing of it. Tim

browns, though the one in the 2nd pic has some really interesting and unusual coloration. Nice pics Jeremy, those look like wild ones with the vibrant red spots. Not all washed out like the typical bread with fins (stockers). Tim

They do that on purpose so they can have a controlled flow of ice down the river. Having the boom there all winter and then just ripping it out all at once so that 200+ sq mi of ice is suddenly flowing down the river uncontrolled at once and damaging the intakes would completely negate the purpose of putting the boom in in the first place. Tim

No you have that backwards, he HAD real downriggers and downgraded to Cannons

Amish Outfitter redwood boards pull harder than otter boats IMO. They claim their plastic ones pull harder yet, but I've never used them. I can attest to how well the redwood boards run as I could barely reel em in with the manual Cisco planer reels (the plastic Wille reels I had previously just folded from the pressure). We'll see how it is this year since I added the motors to make my planer reels electric. Tim
