  2. I've always been a Berkley line guy, but Vanish is junk. If you want to use fluorocarbon, get Seguar, much better stuff. Tim
  3. As most of you probably know the DEC stocks coho as fall fingerlings and let them winter over in the streams to smolt the following spring and head to the lake. This saves the hatchery a ton of money not having to hold and feed the baby 'hos through the winter and it really doesn't seem to have a negative affect on survival. These little guys are super aggressive and you'll probably start catching them on sacks etc. I received reports that with the assistance of the Niagara River Anglers Association (NRAA) 25,000 coho were stocked in the Lower Niagara at the Lewiston Sand Docks on Thursday 10-28 and the Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Association (LOTSA) assisted with stocking 30,000 coho in 18 mile creek on Friday 10-29. I would imagine that other stocking sites have either already received their fish as well, or will early next week. If i see any additional stocking reports, I'll add them here. Please be careful when handling and releasing any baby coho you may catch so they have a chance to migrate to the lake next spring. Tim
  4. Sigh...... you're mostly wrong about that but this really isn't the proper forum in which to discuss it.
  5. Chad, caught many kings and steelies over the years trolling them at typical summer trolling speeds. As heavy as they are they seem to be quite speed tolerant. One summer back in the late 90's a #3 loco, yellow with yellow fish scale tape was my single best spoon that season. Though you wouldn't think of that color as a big king color, they just tore it up. When I think to put it down it still catches fish, problem is I don't put it out much anymore, too many new toys the play with. Alpena Diamonds, Luhr Jensen Flutterspoons and Evil Eye Monarchs are some other old school spoons that still catch lots of fish if they are ever put in the water. Tim

  7. yes, they stock coho as fall fingerlings and let them winter over in the stream to smolt the following spring. Saves the hatchery 6 months of holding the coho and doesn't seem to have a significant negative impact on survival. They stock the coho every year about this time in October. Sometimes makes perch fishing tough in the harbor at Olcott as the coho's sit a little higher in the water than the perch and you sometimes can't get your bait down through the school of aggressive coho to get to the perch. 8. Prince Andrew Cuomo was the man most responsible for the recent Housing Market Meltdown (and the resultant recession) due to his actions when he was running HUD. Yeah, I want HIM as the next Governor of NYS..........NOT!!! Tim
  9. I would be satisfied (thrilled actually) if everything from Westchester County on out would just go away. Tim

Check out the 27.5lb Sheepie that Canadian Guide Aaron Shirley caught on Quinte the other day. If that's not a world record, it's gotta be close. Tim

  14. I followed the exact same path as Ray and love my Scotty Electrics as well. That being said, I've never used Penn Riggers, but I know Ernie Lanteigne (Fish Doctor Charters) uses Penn electrics on his charter boat, so I'd have to guess they are probably pretty solid riggers. Tim
  15. Chad, I've got your rain pants you left on the boat in my car. I'll drop them off at your house one of these days when I'm in the area. Sorry it took so long, this was the first time I've been back to the boat since that friday of labor day weekend that we went out after work. 2nd skunking this year for us (we had 1 in May), been a LONG time since that has happened. 16. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Tim Bromund / FishStyx ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):10-10-10 Time on Water:0700-1200 Weather/Temp:sunny 50s-60-s Wind Speed/Direction:SW 10+ kts Waves: 1-2 Surface Temp: 60 Location:Olcott LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 0 Total Boated:0 Species Breakdown:0 Hot Lure: 0 Trolling Speed: 1.8 - 2.8 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 10ft to 400 ft Lure Depth: 7ft to 120 ft ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Yuck!!! Lady O closed out the season pitching a perfect game against us, no hits, no runs no errors. Started inside and did a pass in 10-30 fow between Olcott and Wilson looking for browns, marked a few fish but no takers, so we turned north and trolled out to the 25 line. Liquid desert out there and temps are so messed from all the constant wind and weather, that it appears the lake is no longer stratified. We had 60 deg on the surface and 57 deg down 120 (didn't go any deeper with the probe). fished from 7:00 til Noon and called it a day. Never moved a rod all morning. We marked no bait and almost no hooks offshore, saw some decent bait pods on bottom between the microwave and the plant in 110-140 fow with some hooks on them, but no takers. Not the ending to the season we had hoped for, but hey, that's fishing. Tim ====================
  17. I think the thick, water resistant copper line would have the opposite effect of what you'd like to achieve. SS Wire gets deep because of it's small diameter and low water resistance (along with the no stretch factor). I have no direct evidence to back this up, but I think in a diver presentation, the drag and water resistance of the thick copper line would more than offset any depth producing capacity of the heavy copper. dragging that line through the water sideways attached to a diver is a lot different than letting it flatline directly behind the boat (or board). YMMV Tim
  18. single hooks and treble hooks both have their fans. Some guys swear that you hook more with trebles but also lose more, and with singles you don't hook up quite as much but land a higher percentage of what you do hook. I fish em however they came out of the package and have never really noticed a significant difference either way. AS long as the spoons run good (the hook is the proper weight for the spoon to have it's intended action) I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Tim

  20. Venison vs. Beef: The controversy ends From the U.S. Venison Council Controversy has long raged about the relative quality and taste of venison and beef as gourmet foods. Some people say venison is tough, with a strong "wild" taste. Others insist venison's flavor is delicate. An independent food research group was retained by the Venison Council to conduct a taste test to determine the truth of these conflicting assertions once and for all. First, a Grade A Choice Holstein steer was chased into a swamp a mile and a half from a road and shot several times. After some of the entrails were removed, the carcass was dragged back over rocks and logs, and through mud and dust to the road. It was then thrown into the back of a pickup truck and driven through rain and snow for 100 miles before being hung out in the sun for a day. It was then lugged into a garage where it was skinned and rolled around on the floor for a while. Strict sanitary precautions were observed throughout the test, within the limitations of the butchering environment. For instance, dogs and cats were allowed to sniff and lick the steer carcass, but most of the time were chased away when they attempted to bite chunks out of it. Next, a sheet of plywood left from last year's butchering was set up in the basement on two saw horses. The pieces of dried blood, hair and fat left from last year were scraped off with a wire brush last used to clean out the grass stuck under the lawn mower. The skinned carcass was then dragged down the steps into the basement where a half dozen inexperienced but enthusiastic and intoxicated men worked on it with meat saws, cleavers, hammers and dull knives. The result was 375 pounds of soup bones, four bushel baskets of meat scraps, and a couple of steaks that were an eighth of an inch thick on one edge and an inch and a half thick on the other edge. The steaks were seared on a glowing red hot cast iron skillet to lock in the flavor. When the smoke cleared, rancid bacon grease was added, along with three pounds of onions, and the whole conglomeration was fried for two hours. The meat was gently teased from the frying pan and served to three intoxicated and blindfolded taste panel volunteers. Every member of the panel thought it was venison. One volunteer even said it tasted exactly like the venison he has eaten in hunting camps for the past 27 years. The results of this scientific test conclusively show that there is no difference between the taste of beef and venison...
